MIAMI, United States – Former world number one Tiger Woods made a solid return on Thursday, November 30, in his latest comeback after a 10-month layoff punctuated by back surgery and personal problems.

Woods, who has not played since February, fired a three-under-par 69 in the opening round of the Hero World Challenge at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas.

The 41-year-old, 14-time major champion carded five birdies and two bogeys in an encouraging first outing since injury forced his withdrawal at the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year.

"I thought I did great," a satisfied Woods said afterwards. "I hadn't played in a while after some difficulities, so to come out here and score like I did was nice.

"It was fun to be out there and be part of a scorecard again."

Woods underwent back surgery in April in the latest of a series of injury setbacks which also forced him to miss the entire 2015-2016 season.

Woods admitted he had not known what to expect on his return to competitive golf.

"I didn't know what I could do. I've been playing golf, been playing a lot of holes at home," Woods said.

"But it's a little different when you've got to tee it up in a tournament. I had a lot of adrenaline going there.

"I had to dial it back a little bit. Those are the internal struggles I haven't had for a while."

Woods has also battled demons in his private life, and was arrested for driving under the influence in May after being found asleep in his Mercedes-Benz by the side of the road near his home in Florida.

Woods, who was found to have five drugs including the powerful opioid hydrocodone in his system, later revealed he had undergone professional treatment to help him manage his medications.

Woods, whose 79 career PGA Tour wins are three shy of Sam Snead's all-time record, has not won a major title since the 2008 US Open and has not won any event since the 2013 World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational. – Rappler.com

ASSURANCE. Mikee Romero, the outgoing PBA chair says the wranglings among team owners is normal. Facebook image

MANILA, Philippines – Despite the impasse that has threatened to delay the opening of PBA season 43 on December 17, the oldest professional league in Asia will start as scheduled.

At least that was what outgoing PBA chairman and Globalport Batangpier owner Mikee Romero assured players, coaches, fans and sports scribes during the PBA Press Corps Annual Awards Night at the Gloria Maris Restaurant in Cubao Thursday, November 30.

“As an outgoing chairman, ‘yan ang assurance na maibibigay namin inyo (that is the assurance that I can give you), that the PBA will be [opened] as scheduled and we will have business as usual,” said Romero.

Romero added that behind the scenes, the 12 teams are fixing the standoff, which started after 7 teams filed a resolution stating that they will not endorse the renewal of Chito Narvasa’s tenure as commissioner days after the controversial Kia-SMB trade.

In the same day, the rest of the 5 teams, composed of San Miguel, Ginebra, Globalport, Kia and Star, released a statement blasting the decision of their counterparts. They also backed Narvasa.

Rumors of a delayed season increased after some team governors were absent in the annual season planning in Los Angeles last month.

Maaayos po natin ito. Like a normal family, may kaunting problema, like a normal human being, passionate manalo tong mga team na ito, pati ‘yung team ko, kaya umaabot sa ganito.”

(We will fix this. Like a normal family, there are some problems and like normal human beings, these people are very passionate in winning, including me. That is why it came to this.)

“I don’t want to elaborate anymore on what’s happening behind the scenes pero ang masasabi ko lang, December 17, napakalaking opening ang gagawin natin.”

(I don’t want to elaborate anymore on what’s happening behind the scenes but this I can tell, we will have a grand opening on December 17.) – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Jayjay Helterbrand has just retired from the game and he plans to stay that way, at least for now.

Helterbrand, who walked away from a storied 17-year PBA career days after Barangay Ginebra successfully defended their Governors’ Cup title last month, said he was offered to be part of the team’s coaching staff but rejected it for the meantime.

“Coach Tim and the head of the management offered me an assistant coaching spot in the team already but I kind of declined it for now because I really want to spend more time with my family,” said the 41-year-old during Ginebra’s thanksgiving party for fans at the Arena in San Juan Tuesday, December 1.

The 6-time PBA champion and 2009 MVP will be returning to the United States, where most of his family resides, but will not stay there permanently as he has businesses to take care of here in the Philippines. But like what fans are itching to ask, will he return to Ginebra as Tim Cone’s assistant?

“In the future? I don’t know when. If it’s still available. If they’re gonna allow me, but I definitely want to come back.”

During the event proper of the thanksgiving party, Helterbrand admitted he got a little teary eyed after a surprise video tribute for him was shown before thousands of Ginebra hopefuls.

“You get a little bit teary-eyed and kind of malungkot pero every player is gonna get through this in their career. I’m just happy that I am able to end my career with a chip and that alone makes it special,” said Helterbrand.

When he reunites with his family, Helterbrand expects his family to bug him about his decision to retire.

“I’m sure they’re still shocked about it. I know my mom is. My mom didn’t want to believe it. She thinks it’s a big joke.” – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine (PH) Blu Girls continued their winning ways against Hong Kong, Pakistan, and South Korea in Group A of the 11th Asian Women’s Softball Championship in Taichung City, Taiwan.

World no. 1 team Japan had dealt a heavy blow on the Blu Girls, with a 0-8 victory but the Philippine team was unfazed by the setback as it trounced Hong Kong (18-0), Pakistan (7-0), and came from behind to win against South Korea (6-4).

"The girls showed great determination and strong character in bouncing back from a tough loss against Japan," said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPHIL) president Jean Henri Lhuillier.

"They're really showing how prepared they are and how they really want to win in this tournament. This augurs well for our bid to qualify in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics," Lhullier added.

Against Hong Kong, Blu Girls’ Arianne Vallestero led the team by going 3 of 3 hits including one homerun, while Maryann Antolihao and Royevel Palma pitched for 4 and 3 strikeouts, respectively.

With the Philippines leading 18-0 on top of the 3rd inning, the game was halted via mercy rule.

In the match against South Korea, the Blu Girls had a total of 10 hits coming from Dani Gilmore, Hailey Decker, Arianne Vallestero, Kailee Cuico, Reese Guevarra, Chelsea Suito, Garie Blando, and Angelie Ursabia.

The team will face Thailand in its last Group A match, where a win will carry the Blu Girls to the semi-finals that serves as a qualifier for the 2018 Asian Games and the World Championships. – Rappler.com

World Cup draw throws up Spain, Portugal showdown

FINAL DRAW. Spain and Portugal are pitted against each other in Group B.

MOSCOW, Russia – Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal will come up against Spain in the standout fixture of the 2018 World Cup group stage, while England were handed an encounter with a dangerous Belgium side during the Friday, December 1, draw.

Spain, the 2010 World Cup winners, have been revitalized under Julen Lopetegui after underperforming in recent years and were seen as the team to avoid after missing out on a place among the top seeds.

It was Portugal, the reigning European champions, who were handed an Iberian derby in a glitzy ceremony held at the Moscow Kremlin and featuring an appearance from Russian President Vladimir Putin alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The draw also laid out all sides' potential routes to the final, and revealed such tantalizing prospects as a quarter-final between Spain and Argentina, and possible semi-finals of Spain against Germany or France versus Brazil.

Spain's match against Portugal is a mouthwatering early clash, though, with the fixture set for the Black Sea resort of Sochi on June 15, 2018.

"They are the champions of Europe, they have fantastic players and we are talking about the highest level," coach Lopetegui told Spanish TV station Cuatro.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo will be 33 years old come next year's finals, meaning this will probably be his last shot at World Cup glory.

Messi vs Iceland

Meanwhile, reigning world champions Germany, the much-fancied Brazil of Neymar, and France will all be pleased with their draws, but the prospects appear tougher for Argentina.

They will come up against Croatia, Nigeria and tournament debutants Iceland as Lionel Messi looks to make up for losing the 2014 final to Germany.

The Barcelona man turns 31 during the tournament, meaning this is also probably his last chance to win the World Cup.

Germany were paired with Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in Group F as Joachim Loew's men try to become the first nation to retain the title since Brazil in 1962.

"I am certainly not scared," Loew told ZDF television.

5-time winners Brazil, eager to exorcize the demons of 2014 and their 7-1 semi-final humiliation against Germany, drew Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia in Group E.

It has been said before that France coach Didier Deschamps has a lucky star over his head when it comes to these draws, and his side will be confident of emerging from Group C ahead of Australia, Peru and Denmark.

"Whatever the group, the French team have to qualify for the knockout round and have to finish first in the group," the 1998 World Cup-winning captain Deschamps told BeIN Sport.

England wary

Former England striker-turned television presenter Gary Lineker oversaw the draw and his nation will be pleased after Diego Maradona, who knocked Lineker's England out of the 1986 World Cup with his infamous "Hand of God" goal, drew Gareth Southgate's men in Group G with Belgium, Tunisia and debutants Panama.

England manager Southgate was wary, however, after all his country's recent disappointments at major tournaments.

"We've been good at writing teams off and then getting beat. We've got to be prepared for every game," said Southgate, and England could in theory find themselves on a collision course with Germany and Spain later on if they do not win the group.

England begin against Tunisia in Volgograd – in a stadium built on one of the main sites of the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the bloodiest episodes of the Second World War – on June 18, 2018.

Japan will face a tough task to finish in the top two of Group H that features Robert Lewandowski's Poland, Sadio Mane's Senegal and Colombia.

The tournament that spans 11 cities and 12 stadiums kicks off when host nation Russia take on Saudi Arabia on June 14 in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, which will also host the final on Sunday, July 15, 2018.

Putin address

The ceremony was staged inside the State Kremlin Palace, where Communist Party Congresses were held during the Soviet era.

President Putin said Russia had a "strong affection" for football.

"Our country is looking forward to the championship and intends to hold it at the highest level," Putin said.

The build-up to the tournament has been somewhat overshadowed by the controversy that surrounded the awarding of the tournament to Russia, and by fears of terrorism and hooliganism, as well as of Putin's relations with the West.

The draw also came just as Russia is dealing with allegations of widespread doping in other sports, including when it hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics.

But Infantino denied that doping was a problem in football.

"If you would have a serious doping issue in football this would be known by now, whether in Russia or any other country of the world," he said at a press conference. –Rappler.com

John Vincent Moralde battered by Toka Kahn Clary in US debut, loses by 7th round TKO

FIRST LOSS. John Vincent Moralde will move up to 130 or 135 pounds after struggling to make featherweight, his promoter says. Screenshot from live stream

NEW YORK CITY, USA – John Vincent Moralde's debut on American soil ended in disheartening fashion as he was outworked and stopped by Toka Kahn Clary Friday, December 1 (Saturday Manila time), in his biggest exposure to date.

Moralde, a previously unbeaten featherweight from Davao City, Philippines, was kept on his stool after the seventh of a 10-round scheduled fight in Providence, Rhode Island, after being battered around the ring for the previous 5 rounds by his Liberian-born opponent, who now lives and fights out of Rhode Island.

There were no knockdowns but the 25-year-old Moralde (19-1, 10 knockouts) had lost all snap on his punches following an aggressive first two rounds and was a sitting target for the body punches and straight lefts of Clary (24-1, 17 KOs), who has now won 5 straight following his only defeat, a first-round knockout to Filipino Jhon Gemino in September of 2016.

"He was doing good in the early rounds but he gassed out," said Moralde's promoter Jim Claude Manangquil, who says Moralde was weakened by dropping from 147 pounds to 125 pounds over 4 weeks to make weight for this fight.

"Time to move up in weight. He will go up to 130 or 135 in his next fight," Manangquil added.

Moralde had been in Miami since July with Osmiri "Moro" Fernandez, a noted local trainer originally from Cuba, alongside other fighters under the Sanman Promotions banner, namely Harmonito dela Torre and Reymart Gaballo.

He says he had only begun training a month prior to the fight, and had been working as a crewman on a boat before being informed of the fight.

"It's all my fault," says Moralde. "Better luck next time."

Gaballo recently won his American debut, stopping Ernesto Guerrero in two rounds on November 15, while Dela Torre suffered his first defeat on November 18, losing a decision to Olympic silver medalist Tugstsogt Nyambayar.

The show was promoted by Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Promotions. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – For the first time in school history, the Adamson University Pep Squad claimed top honors in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition held at the Mall of Asia Arena, Saturday, December 2.

After finishing 2nd runner-up in last year’s competition, the cheering squad of the Soaring Falcons finally perched on top of the pack with their 1980’s disco theme with the hashtag #80sfor80. Complete with a disco ball prop and glow sticks from their raucous fans, Adamson delivered a clean and crisp routine that got a unanimous ovation from fans of all eight competing schools. The same arena-wide explosion of cheers happened as Adamson was formally announced as the overall champion.

The University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe followed Adamson as the 1st runner-up while the UE Pep Squad finished 2nd runner-up.

Four-peating champion National University Pep Squad failed to fulfill their #AllOutOn5 championships campaign after multiple errors plagued their “Under the Sea” performance. Controversial returnee University of the Philippines Pep Squad also failed to finish at the top after suffering the same fate as their rivals from NU in their comeback from a one-year hiatus. It’s UP’s first non-podium finish in 20 years.

MANILA, Philippines – Global Cebu FC came from behind to stun top seeded FC Meralco Manila, 2-1, to open the Philippines Football League (PFL) Finals Series on Saturday, December 2, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

After a scoreless first half, Tahj Minniecon of Meralco ended the drought with a penalty kick in the 61st minute that initially sent the Global goal keeper Patrick Deyto the wrong way to register the series' first away goal

Minniecon almost doubled the lead 7 minutes later, but Deyto came out to block the fiery winger's shot.

Global struggled offensively for most of the match as the team failed to move forward to their attacking third until Wesley Dos Santos fired a header at the 90th minute. Two minutes later, Paolo Salenga – who was subsitituted in the 78th minute – came up big with a cross to Hikaru Minegeishi who converted it at the edge of the box.

In the first half, Meralco continued to threaten Global throughout the game with Meralco winger Minniecon attempting a number of chances. Deyto was successfully making crucial saves throughout the first half against the first seeded team.

The match turned physical in the 27th minute when Meralco's Connor Tacagni was booked for a tackle on Wesley Dos Santos. Paul Mulders then followed in the 34th minute as he picked up his first yellow for Global Cebu after clipping Minniecon.

4th seeded Global Cebu hosted Saturday's match in Rizal Memorial due to the unavailability of the Cebu City Sports Complex on both December 2 and December 9. 1st seeded Meralco will be hosting the second leg in the same venue, but the away goals rule will still apply in this PFL semi-finals series.

The second leg will take place on Saturday, December 9, 7 pm, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. – Rappler.com

Kintaro Miyagi makes Cebu proud by scoring the Azkals third goal vs Laos

RISING STAR. Cebu's King Miyagi scores an goal in his first game as a senior Azkal and in foreign country.

CEBU CITY, Philippines - Cebuano Kintaro “King" Miyagi was not part of the Philippine Azkals first 11 in their first match against Laos in the ongoing four-nation Chinese Taipei Football Association (CTFA) International Tournament in Taipei, Taiwan.

But when he replaced no less than his idol Phil Younghusband, in the 70th minute of the match, he made sure to give it his all. Indeed, Miyagi did not waste his first time to play for the senior men’s football team by scoring the Philippine’s third goal in the 90th minute. The Philippines won, 3-1.

“No naman, I was not expecting too much cause I don’t want to disappoint the team by giving them high hopes. I’m just glad I got to add a score for our country in my first international game as an Azkal since this will hopefully boost up the self esteem of other young football players that nothing is impossible as long as we work hard with dedication and passion to what we all love to do, football,” said Miyagi when asked if he was expecting to immediately score a goal in his first international stint as an Azkal.

The last time that a Cebuano played for the Philippine Azkals was in 2015 when Paolo Pascual was goalkeeper for the national team. He later hang up his gloves to pursue his aviation dreams.

Now, the Cebu football community and the rest of the Cebuanos have an extra reason to cheer again for the Philippine Azkals.

“I felt very happy because it is my debut as a player in the Philippine senior team a.k.a the Azkals. It really is a day to be remembered for me since this is an international game and I got to score a goal for our country, the Philippines,” Miyagi said.

Miyagi is no stranger to representing the Philippines in international tournaments being part of the Little Azkals U13 and U14 batch 2011, the most successful youth boys team to date in the history of Philippine football. Back then, he was a defender and not a striker.

The current CTFL tournament is, however, Miyagi’s first as a member of the Philippine Azkals.

“Yes, it is my first time to be called up for the Philippine’s senior men’s team. I felt really excited and nervous at the same time knowing that at a young age, I'll be able to play with my childhood idols like Phil & James Younghusband, Angel Guirado, Simone, etc.”

The 19-year-old footballer is also one of the UAAP stars, playing for the UP Fighting Maroons.

The third year Bachelor of Physical Education student joined the University of the Philippines-Diliman when he was offered a scholarship by the team’s head coach Anto Gonzales.  The two worked together when Miyagi played for the Philippine U15 coached by Gonzales. That team played in the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM)-Frenz U-15 ASEAN Champions Trophy in 2013.

His teammate with the Little Azkals then, and now in UP, Christian Floren Lapas of Bayawan, Negros Oriental, is also now an Azkal.

Prior to that, Miyagi also helmed the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles to a lot of titles and to city, regional and Palaro meets representing Mandaue City and Central Visayas.

“I adjusted to the team through our trainings. Like when the seniors correct me with my minor mistakes, it gives me the confidence to talk and be comfortable playing with them even though I’m still new in the senior men’s team. Also through meetings, they don’t make me feel that there should be a wall between the seniors and the newly picked up players who are younger.”

Miyagi dedicated his first goal in his first international cap to God and many people close to his heart most especially fallen UP Fighting Maroon teammate Rogie Maglinas.  Miyagi wears the No. 13 on his jersey, the same number as Maglinas who succumbed to cancer in 2016. "I want Rogie to know that as time passes by without him here on Earth, he is still living with us in our hearts playing what he loves most, football.”

As one of the young footballers of the Azkals, Miyagi knows that he has to be mentally prepared for the team and the tournament.

For young footballers in Cebu he said, “never stop dreaming. I was once a young boy too who didn’t know I’d reach this far. I just kept playing football, I wouldn’t miss even the smallest tournament there was in Cebu even if it meant my mom getting mad at me because she didn’t want my white jersey, socks and shoes to be dirty and full of mud again after it’s being washed and cleaned.”

Miyagi said this means having a lot of sacrifices.

“I would wake up as early as 5 am just to go to training when I was in high school and go straight to class at 8 am and train football again after class. On the weekends, I would play wherever there’s a tournament. Sometimes when I get called up for national duty, I fly to Manila Friday night from school and fly back to Cebu early Monday morning and go straight to school again."

Miyagi pointed out that one of the sacrifices he had to make was to give up a comfortable life in Cebu to chase his dream in Manila.

“When I graduated high school, I got a scholarship offer from Coach Anto Gonzales to play football for the UP Men’s Football Team. From then on, my life has changed. I had to be independent because it meant I wouldn’t have my mom around anymore to do almost everything for me, from waking me up, cooking me breakfast, preparing my clothes and things, bringing me and picking me up from school. All those luxury of having a mom and having my family around every day was taken away from me when I moved to Manila. But I decided to stick with my decision because of my love for football.”

Aside from Laos, the Philippines will also face host Chinese Taipei and Timor Leste. – Rappler.com

CEBU CITY, Philippines - It will be like a homecoming for Cebuano Olympic marathoner Mary Joy Tabal when she guns for her fifth title as the 41st Milo Marathon National Finals will be held here for the first time on Sunday, December 3.

No other woman has won the Milo Marathon five times in a row.

This is the third year that the National Finals for the Milo National Marathon will be held outside Manila. In 2015 it was held in Angeles, Pampanga and last year in Iloilo.

Tabal always said that it was in Milo where she first dreamed of becoming a champion. From a 6th place finish in the 5K category in 2009, Tabal has risen to clinch the female title in the All-Filipino category in 2013 and has yet to relinquish it.

Tabal will be among a throng of 32,000 runners who will be hitting the streets of Cebu as early as 3am which is the start for the full 42K distance. Full distance participants must cross the finish line before the 9 am cutoff time.

800 are running for the National Finals, composed of qualifiers from the 16 regional legs.

Participants for the 21K will be released at 4:30 am, those in the 10K at 5am, 3K at 5:30 am and 5K runners at 5:35 am. The starting line will be at the Cebu Normal University while the finish line will be inside the Cebu City Sports Center.

Aside from the Open and All Filipino categories wherein the winners will be hailed as the Milo Marathon king and queen, winners in the age-group categories will also be recognized up until third place.

Another first is that should the All-Filipino male and female winner also finish first in the open category, they will also get an additional cash prize on top of the cash prize they will be receive in the All-Filipino category.

Open male and female winners will get P300,000 each, while the All-Filipino male and female winners will pocket P150,000 each. Aside from that, top finishers will get an additional cash prize of P50,000 if they will be able to break an invisible time barrier set by the organizers. This brings to a total of half million in cash prize for the champions.

Festive and scenic route

Local organizer Ricky Ballesteros promised a challenging yet scenic route that will give runners a glimpse of Cebu’s history throughout the 42K distance.

From the Cebu Normal University, participants will go uptown past the Fuente Osmeña Circle onwards to the Cebu Provincial Capitol then turn right to Escario then Gorordo Avenue then down the Pope John Paul II Avenue towards Sergio Osmeña Jr. Boulevard then take the first U-turn along Pigafetta Street wherein the entrance gate of the Fort San Pedro is located.

They then head for Mandaue City by going up again on Sergio Osmeña Jr. Boulevard then back the Pope John Paul II Avenue then go right towards the Governor M. Cuenco Avenue down to M.L. Quezon Avenue, A.C. Cortes towards the second U-turn along Ouano Avenue near gate 4 of the Cebu International Convention Center then go back the same way.

Upon reaching again the Governor M. Cuenco Avenue, runners should take a right towards Salinas Drive passing by the Cebu I.T. Park then back to the Gorordo Avenue stretch then down Pantaleon del Rosario Street then go inside the Cebu City Sports Center where the finish line is located.

Milo National Marathon Theme

This year’s Milo Marathon theme is “Magsama-sama, Tumakbo, Matuto” which highlights the life lessons that runners can learn from joining the event. Lessons pertaining to the value of discipline, resilience, and determination, which runners can also apply in life.  – Rappler.com

Adamson Pep Squad captain Dwyeth Vergeire wins it all on his last day

MANILA, Philippines –  For Adamson Pep Squad captain Dwyeth Vergeire, his success couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

Sampung Araw para sa Huling Sayaw (Ten days for the last dance),” read a caption on a photo on his Facebook profile.  Little did the graduating leader know that his curtain call would pay him off for all the hard work he has put in for the past 5 years.

On Saturday, December 2, amid a rainbow-colored sea of adoring fans, the titans of cheerdance came crashing down, one after the other, quite literally.

Then along came the Adamson Pep Squad – clad in sky blue and glitter, skipping around the arena with the support of their glowstick-waving fans. They were ready to entertain, not to gain glory nor gold. They were ready to win hearts, not medals.

To the tune of 1980s OPM hits your parents would get jiggy with back in their heyday, they did exactly that. Complete with an actual disco ball glued to a pole, they took the crowd back to a time where things were simpler. And it showed too with how they performed – simpler tosses, simpler pyramids, but they were cleaner than the rest. They showed that, like life was in the 80s, not everything has to be complicated.

By the time that the announcement of winners came, no one knew who the podium finishers would be. People social media were uncharacteristically diverse in their personal picks. Even the judges themselves admitted through the emcees that it was “one of the most difficult-to-judge contests in CDC history.”

Surprisingly, the biggest highlight of the competition happened after the runners-up were announced. The silver medalists haven’t even left the podium when a big majority of fans in the Mall of Asia Arena started to call for their unanimous pick to win it all.

“Adamson! Adamson! Adamson!” More than 18,000 people united in one voice, calling for the young challengers who were once an afterthought in the long-standing annual spectacle.

Then their call was answered. The Adamson Pep Squad was officially declared the UAAP Season 80 Cheerdance Competition champions amid an explosion of elation (and confetti) from all corners of the arena.

A full hour after the end of the competition, Vergeire was still in disbelief. “Parang panaginip po siya eh,” he said. “Since majority po sa team namin bago so parang 'Huh? Totoo ba talagang nanalo kami? Champion pa?'”

(“It’s like a dream. Since majority of the team was new, I was like, 'Huh? Did we really win? Champions even?'”)

“Speechless po [ako],” he added. “Di ko po ma-explain kung paano kami nanalo. Sa totoo po, di po kami nag-eexpect na kumuha ng trophy or medal. Yung pinaka-goal po talaga namin sa team is to win hearts.”

(“I’m speechless. I can’t explain how we won. Actually, we weren’t expecting to get trophies or medals. Our main goal as a team is to win hearts.”)

Pag nanalo po kami sa puso ng lahat, susunod na po ‘yung trophy ‘tsaka medals.”

(“If we have won the hearts of everyone, the trophies and medals will follow.”)

Sure enough, he did just that. After 4 years of coming up short, he made it count at just the right time. – Rappler.com

"THE HURRICANE". Gregory Shane Helms will be coming to Manila for the noche buena event. Photo from WWE

MANILA, Philippines—Now that it’s December and there wasn’t really much to talk about from this week’s episodes of RAW, SmackDown, 205 Live, and NXT, let’s take a little time to ask for a few things from the pro wrestling universe this holiday season.

1.     More international wrestling in Manila

Let’s start with the home front. If you’re active on the wrestling side of the internet, you may have already heard of a new Southeast Asian superpromotion forming, Asia Wrestling Entertainment (AWE). It’s got some of the best wrestlers from the region – including former PWR champion “Beautiful” Billy Suede – and the best news is that international wrestlers, including some who currently work with the WWE, will be present.

AWE’s bringing in legendary former WWE star Shane “The Hurricane” Helms, Cruiserweight Classic competitor Ho Ho Lun (who will also be here next week as part of Manila Wrestling Federation’s Noche Buena event) as well as current United Kingdom champion Pete Dunne, former champion Tyler Bate, and fellow British Strong Style member Trent Seven.

We’ve got Lun, as well as Suede and British wrestlers The Regime appearing in Philippine Wrestling Revolution, and I hope it doesn’t stop there. It’s likely that WWE will hold more shows here, but I hope there’s more to it than that. I hope it’s the beginning of a new era in the local scene where more and more international wrestlers find the Philippine market a lucrative one; with a solid foundation already popping up, this is even more likely to become a reality. We need TJP to come back and perform for his home country.

The next step, of course, is to sign someone from the local homegrown scene.

2.     More progressiveness from mainstream wrestling

The WWE took major strides forward in hosting the all-women Mae Young Classic tournament earlier this year, and I hope it doesn’t stop there. I hope the goal becomes even more progressiveness, and we finally get more fleshed-out characters and representation not only for ethnic minorities, but also for the LGBTQ+ sector.

{source} <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JYAYZfbOfm8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> {/source}

Of course, it’s tough to do when there’s an old white American man in charge of the whole thing, but it’s high time to get with the program really soon. They can’t delay this any further in 2018 and beyond, because the old paradigm’s feeling a reckoning right now. They dropped a huge ball by not capitalizing on Darren Young’s coming out and the media momentum from that moment, and now he doesn’t work for them anymore. They’ve still got chances to do better, but I hope they know that they can never go backwards at this point.

3.     Better, more sensible storytelling - especially on RAW.

We’re already in a phase in which the WWE is building the clear next generation (moreso after the last one that came to prominence in the late 2000s and early 2010s felt very lost – poor CM Punk and Daniel Bryan) but they can’t get anywhere, they can’t get over if the writing isn’t behind them.

{source} <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/04ncqmD6V98" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> {/source}

WWE’s suffering so much from a pathological need to micromanage their creative side that it’s hampering a lot of the up-and-coming talent from establishing their place. So they’re still turning to veterans in the game, such as Brock Lesnar and AJ Styles, simply because they can’t seem to support who they have. It’s always money first before the future, and it’s not a sustainable model. Styles can’t wrestle forever, and if this generation becomes the next wave of veterans, then the quality will decline even more. Tell better stories, and make better characters

4.     The emergence of even more competition

Chris Jericho crossing over to New Japan Pro Wrestling (even more than Cody Rhodes signing with Ring of Honor and effectively associating himself with NJPW) establishes the fact that NJPW is the clear #2 competition with the WWE. This is wonderful for the wrestling scene because it will eventually force the WWE, even if it’s the runaway top dog in the business, to do better.

{source} <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Eg45gWvHsS4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> {/source}

I hope that this clear rise to power would elevate players like Ring of Honor even more, even though it would be really hard for them to achieve WWE’s heights. But as long as they remain a viable option, the business would be all the better for it. It’s also hard to with TNA/GFW/Impact well because of so much cursed mismanagement, so if you’d like to keep them in your thoughts and prayers, go right ahead.

MANILA, Philippines – The National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs rode on a huge 4th quarter to turn back the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors, 79-68, in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 80 women’s basketball finals and claim their 4th straight league title at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday, December 3.

The Lady Bulldogs were in uncharted territory as they trailed 51-54 at the end of the 3rd quarter before gaining life to outscore the Lady Warriors 28-14 in the payoff period and keep their winning streak intact at 64 straight games.

Down 61-66 midway the 4th, UE rallied behind Ruthlaine Tacula, who scored 5 straight points, to keep it close at 66-68 only to lose gas down the stretch with Rhena Itesa and Janet Sison conspiring to keep NU afloat.

Itesa scored 4 straight points with a little under two minutes left in the game, 72-66, before Sison took charge as she scored the Lady Bulldogs' last 7 points, capped a heart-wrenching triple, that kept UE at bay.

Finals MVP Trixie Antiquiera paced the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points, built on 6 triples, and was plus-27 the whole game.

Antiquiera, who torched UE with 30 points in Game 1, did not score in the fourth quarter but was pivotal in NU’s second-quarter comeback from a deficit as big as 12 points, completing a 4-point play to tie things up at 33-all.

Itesa poured in 15 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter, and 13 boards while season MVP Jack Danielle Animam made her presence felt with 23 boards, 9 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.

“I’m so happy with the girls. They never let down. Still nandoon pa rin sila, lumalaban until the end of the game,” said NU head coach Pat Aquino. “I give credit to UE. They played one heck of a game today. Alam namin na magiging ganoon ang laban so talagang pinaghandaan kami, buti na lang, nandito lahat sila.”

(I’m so happy with the girls. They never let down. They were there fighting at the end of the game. I give credit to UE. They played one heck of a game today. We knew that it was going to be hard since they really prepared for us but thankfully, the players stepped up.)

After NU took a 41-35 advantage following an 8-0 run, sparked by back-to-back treys from Antiquiera, the Lady Warriors got back on their feet and answered with a 17-2 blitz, 9 points coming from Eunique Chan, to lead 52-43.

The minute Tacula almost carried the Lady Warriors into forcing a rubber match as she finished with a herculean performance of 25 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Chan added 19 points in the loss. – Rappler.com
