MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines Pep Squad held a non-competitive pep rally on Wednesday, November 16, at the College of Human Kinetics (CHK) gymnasium, to thank the UP community for their unwavering support on UP Pep’s decision not to join the 2016 UAAP Cheerdance Competition.

As announced on their Facebook page on October 26, the UP Pep Squad, refused to participate in the said league competition for reasons they enumerated in the statement. (READ: UP pulls out of UAAP Cheerdance Competition)

We have repeatedly sought out the delegated individuals to no avail. And after many weeks, months, and now a year of waiting, our issues and questions remain unresolved. Reared in the institution we represent, we abide with our principles of honor and integrity, and stay true to our word of foregoing with the competition, should the same organizers be hired to handle the event again,” it read.

Coach Lalaine Pereña’s team still received overwhelming support from the UP community and their other supporters despite their absence from the UAAP Cheerdance, in which they hold the most number of championships, tied with University of Sto. Tomas.

In line with this, the team made “gratefulness” their annual theme for their performances.

‘Thank you’

For the past 18 years, hindi pa talaga kami nakagawa ng routine to thank these people who are there to support us manalo man o matalo. So we came up to this routine para pasalamatan ‘yong mga tao na andiyan kahit ano pang pinagdadaanan namin,” said UP Pep Squad Assistant Coach Pio Opinaldo.

(For the past 18 years, we haven’t done any routine dedicated to these people who have been there to support us whether we win or lose. So we came up with this routine to thank them who have been present no matter what we are going through.)

A teary-eyed Pereña refused to be interviewed after the program. The celebrated coach has won numerous awards for the university but has always shied away from the media.

“This is our way of thanking them,” added Opinaldo.

He also said that there are people who didn’t agree with their decision to pull out from the competition but respected their principle and supported them all the way.

Everything for a reason

“There must be a reason for us withdrawing. It is basically a matter of principle with the purpose of improving the cheerdance competition in the future,” said UP CHK Dean Ronualdo Dizer in his opening speech.

“We’re doing things for a reason. We hope you understand us someday.”

He encouraged the audience to support the Pep Squad in all their endeavors, especially as they represent the Philippines in the 2016 Asian Cheerleading and Dancesport Competition in Jakarta, Indonesia.

They will be joining 6 categories namely the all-female team cheer category, cheerdance category, mixed team cheer, mixed group stunts, all-female group stunts, and the cheerdance duo.

“Mabuhay tayo. Let’s keep the school pride flying high. Let’s keep the flame of solidarity all the time,” said Dizer.

Kate Upton savages MLB voters who snubbed fiancee Verlander

BEANED. Kate Upton doesn't appreciate the MLB voters' unusual decision to snub her fiancee Justin Verlander

MANILA, Philippines - Kate Upton pulls no punches when it comes to her future hubby Justin Verlander.

Verlander, an ace hurler for the Detroit Tigers, came up second to the Boston Red Sox's Rick Porcello in voting for the American League Cy Young Award, which honors Major League Baseball's best pitchers in each of the two leagues. Verlander had won the award in 2011 and was favored by many to win a second one after leading the league in 254 and posting a career-low Earned Run Average (ERA) of 3.04.

By comparison, Porcello had the best record in the league at 22-4 for the AL East champion Boston Red Sox and had a slightly higher (but career-best) ERA at 3.15 while striking out fewer batters than Verlander at 189.

The Baseball Writers Association of America threw Verlander a curveball however when two voters left Verlander off their ballot, contributing to his 5-point loss to Porcello and denying him an opportunity at a legacy boosting laurel.

Upton thought it was unfair and let it be known.

"Hey @MLB I thought I was the only person allowed to fuck @JustinVerlander ?! What 2 writers didn't have him on their ballot?," the swimsuit model tweeted.

AFF Suzuki Cup Group A

Tickets available at all Ticketworld outlets for P150, P300, P500, and P700

Round trip shuttles from Trinoma are available for P55 at 3pm, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm and 7pm

The Philippine Azkals will play host to a group stage of the AFF Suzuki Cup, the championship of ASEAN men's football, for the first time starting Saturday.

MANILA, Philippines – The top-ranked ASEAN side will need to prove that lofty billing against the 3 teams that eliminated them from contention in the semifinals in the last 3 editions of the tournament.

The top two teams from the group stage progress to the two-legged home-and-away semifinals in December, with a two-legged final series coming after that.

The other group will be contested by hosts Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia, who won a qualifying tournament last month.

Personnel issues

Although it was reported for months that China-based striker Javier Patiño would be available for the tournament, it appears that that will no longer be the case. The Spanish-born Filipino will miss the competition.

A source from the PFF explained the situation. According to FIFA convention, a team must release players for international competition during FIFA international windows, but not necessarily for games outside those windows, like the Suzuki. Patiño's club season with Henan Jianye finished up two weeks ago, so he has no club commitments until next year. That theoretically makes him releasable.

According to the source, if a player is injured on international duty during FIFA dates, FIFA could help shoulder the costs of hospitalization and other expenses for the player. But this is not the case if the player is hurt on a non-FIFA day. The source says that Henan Jianye could thus void Patiño's contract if he is hurt playing for the Philippines during this competition.

The contract is too big to take a risk,” said the source.

Fortunately Mike Ott, the younger brother of Manny, is available. He was at training on Wednesday and will be on the roster. The younger Ott could help make up for the loss of Patiño. He scored against Bahrain in a recent friendly. Mike plays for the second team of Bundesliga 2 side Nurnberg in Germany.

But the Azkals have also suffered another personnel blow, this time on defense. Daisuke Sato was not at training on Wednesday and it seems he will not participate. His Romanian club, CSM Politehnica Iasi, is under no obligation to release him, again, because the entire Suzuki Cup is played outside of FIFA international windows. Sato did play the entire match against Kyrgyzstan last week at center back and was instrumental in ensuring a clean sheet. He customarily plays at left back

Coach Thomas Dooley has 3 options in his roster to supplant Sato on the left side of the defense; Jeffrey Christiaens and Martin Steuble from Ceres, and Kaya's Shirmar Felongco. All 3 had international club experience this year in the AFC Cup. Steuble did get a red card in the second leg of the semifinal loss to Thailand two years ago so he may not be eligible to suit up on Saturday. That likely opens the door for Christiaens to start.

Luke Woodland, who played centerback in two friendlies in the lead up to this competition, will also not be in the squad. Dennis Villanueva now becomes the favorite to partner Amani Aguinaldo in the center of the defense.

Scouting the opposition

The Azkals start off with Singapore, the 2012 champions of the event. The Lions have underperformed of late, their recent 1-0 friendly win against Cambodia snapped a 7-match winless streak.

Veteran striker Fazrul Nawaz blew out his ACL a few months ago and is not playing. The onus will be on Khairul Amri and Shahril Ishak, veterans of the 2012 title-winning squad, to create, and for Baihakki Khaizan to shore up the defense.

Singapore, ranked 171 in the world, are picked by many to miss the semifinals. But this team did eke out a stunning 0-0 draw against Japan in World Cup qualifying last year, so they could pose a real threat to the home side.

Indonesia are a bit of a mystery team. They have only recently had their FIFA suspension lifted, so not a great deal is known about their current form. Merah Puti, (red-whites) can take encouragement from a fighting 3-2 loss against Vietnam in Hanoi last week. Fans of the Transitive Property of Equality will note that Vietnam defeated North Korea recently 5-2, just before the North Koreans beat us 3-1

Stefano Lillipally, a former Netherlands youth player, will be a big boost to the squad in the midfield. But the real gem of this team is Evan Dimas Darmono. The 21-year old mid is a world-class talent who scored in the last Suzuki Cup against Laos. Dimas is shifty, has terrific ball control and can finish. This could be his breakout tournament.

Indonesia's marquee player, Irfan Bachdim, has suffered a fractured fibula in training and will miss the tournament. The Dutch-born “David Beckham of Indonesia” plies his trade in the second tier of the J-League in Japan.

Indonesia open the tournament with a game against Thailand on Saurday afternoon.

Thailand are the defending champs and they looked razor-sharp in drawing Australia 2-2 last Tuesday in a World Cup qualifier. Thailand are bottom in their tough qualifying pool and look set to miss the boat to Russia in 2018 but they have competed well in all their matches. On Tuesday only a soft penalty call on Australia's equalizer denied them what should have been a 2-1 victory.

Teerasil Dangda, Thailand's lead striker, is in form, striking twice on Tuesday. In 2014 Dangda was still playing in the Spanish second tier and was not lined up for the War Elephants for the Suzuki. They won it anyway without him. Dangda has 34 goals for Thailand.

Charyl Chappuis has been slow to get back from injury and did not play last Tuesday but Chanathip Songkrasin, the diminutive midfield magician, is a real quality player who set up the first goal with Tristan Do, Thailand's French-born wingback.

Thailand also have the recent passing of their king, Bhumipol Adulyadej to motivate them. Fans at the Rajamangala stadium on Tuesday wore black as a sign of mourning, and coach Kiatisuk Senamuang reportedly wept in the post-match interview.

The Philippines' match up with Thailand on November 25 could be very crucial for both teams. Singapore and Indonesia kick off simultaneously in Rizal Memorial on that time.

Team spirit

Despite the challenges, Phil Younghusband, the team captain, says team morale is high and they are full of confidence.

This team is very close and we will fight for each other,” said the country's all-time leading scorer.

We have quality players left and right, players with good experience. Not having Patiño and Sato are big losses but we have a good squad. I'm not worried.”

It also helps that there are no major injury concerns with the players in the camp. Even Misagh Bahadoran is looking sharp and even scored a scissor kick goal in the corner kick drills on Wednesday. He had been battling fitness issues and came off the bench to score against Kyrgyzstan.

Come Saturday it will be all up to the players to make some history in the Philippine Sports Stadium.

Thirdy Ravena becomes Ateneo’s closer as Blue Eagles continue to fly

MANILA, Philippines – Thirdy Ravena started dancing with the leather basketball as Adamson rookie Jerrick Ahanmisi took the challenge to contain him at the 3-point line.

First, a crossover to the right, then a crossover to the left, followed by backing Ahanmisi down in the paint with brute force as fans of Adamson threw jeers from the stands. Ravena then went for a turnaround, but the shot missed. Papi Sarr couldn’t stop Isaac Go from grabbing the offensive rebounds, but the Blue Eagles big man misfired on his put-backs.

Before any of the 3 Soaring Falcons in the paint could jump for the leather and run down the other end for an attempt at a comeback, Ravena, an athletic freak of nature, was already in the air, the tips of his fingers pushing the ball back in the basket, once again leading Ateneo to a victory.

As Ravena swung his right arm and let out screams of emotions while the Ateneo crowd cheered in support, what was a developing trend for the red-hot Blue Eagles became pretty clear: the prodigal son has become this team’s closer.

“I’m just trying to follow Coach Tab [Baldwin], cause he just asks me to do it, probably cause I just wanted to win,” Ravena later said following the Blue Eagles’ elimination round-ending 73-67 triumph over the Soaring Falcons

The atmosphere of the contest was Final Four-like. Win, and Ateneo secures the second spot which means a twice-to-beat advantage against the team that eliminated them last season, FEU. Lose, and a virtual best-of-3 series with Adamson commences next week.

It was pretty clear, especially with how they rallied from an early deficit, what the Blue Eagles preferred.

“It’s a grind-out game, it’s a tough game. Someone has to make sure we get that win, and every single one of us contributed to that,” Ravena explained.

It’s pretty obvious that something changed with these Blue Eagles after their loss against the UP Maroons which was their low point for Season 79. The Ateneo team since then has looked like a championship-caliber roster, one that’s well-coached, confident, and lethal. Six straight wins later, including a “We don’t plan on laying down” victory against La Salle, and suddenly the Green Archers don’t look like a sure bet to win the UAAP title anymore.

“Our loss to UP was a blessing in disguise, because we woke up. We weren’t the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the first round and first game of the second round, so we woke up,” said second-year standout Mike Nieto, who’s lost 35 pounds from last year and has been a revelation himself.

“Everyone just probably realized we didn’t work that hard just to lose. We just dug deep,” Ravena shared about what changed following the team’s fall to 4-4 - it’s last loss more than 5 weeks ago.

GET THAT BOARD. Ateneo has won 10 games this season on a lot of team effort. Photo by Josh Albelda/Rappler

Truth be told, Ateneo isn’t even supposed to be here in the enviable situation it’s in. Is Baldwin a tremendous coach? Absolutely. But the Blue Eagles lost 7 key players to academic issues over the summer, found out prized recruit Tyler Tio couldn’t suit up yet this year due to citizenship issues, then watched Aaron Black go down early in the season to a foot injury.

Yet despite all that, this year’s Blue Eagles have an even better record than the one of last year led by league MVP Kiefer Ravena and Von Pessumal, and are favored to make the finals for the first time since 2012.

“I guess it’s a surprise to other people, but for us we just focused on every game and [said], ‘we’ll see where we end up.’ We ended up number two,” said assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga.

The Tamaraws now await Ateneo for another semis showdown, one that’s expected to be high on emotions, involves a few thrown elbows, and quite possibly ends dramatically. Remember Mac Belo’s game-winner, anyone?

FEU is the defending champion, and it won’t go down easily, but after dominating the Tamaraws in their season series, do the Blue Eagles enter with the upper hand? It sure looks like it.

Just don’t tell them that.

“They’re a champion team. They’re the defending champions, so we really have to go through them. They’re a tough team, and we don’t think that we have the advantage. That’s a trap for us,” said Arespacochaga.

As Nieto put it, “It’s going to be a dogfight… patayan yan for sure, kasi they’re the defending champions.”

The Blue Eagles have looked as great as they have because of unselfishness on offense and headstrong defense, to put it simply. It’s unpredictable where the scoring comes from each game, and on the other end, teams have to fight like hell to get buckets. Just ask Ben Mbala or the Soaring Falcons, who scored only 8 points in the final period of their most important game of the eliminations.

But one of the most important factors of winning at the highest level includes having a go-to closer at the end of games. Kiefer Ravena was just that since the moment he first entered the UAAP, and now, his little brother has taken the mantle.

The best part? Thirdy isn’t doing it by scoring on tough step-back jumpers or making a lay-up over 6 outstretched arms in the paint. Older brother could do everything on the court, but putting the ball in the hole was his undisputed and expected best quality. “Thirds,” meanwhile, is a jack of all trades who has the ability to impact the game through so many dimensions at any moment.

The scoreboard read 62-59 in favor of Ateneo with 3:46 remaining after a Sarr put-back. Nerves were creeping up fans of the Blue Eagles crowd, who suddenly turned silent with the possibility of a meltdown in the making.

Ravena had the ball in his hands, then used his explosiveness to attack the basket where Sarr had to leave the paint and impede his path. That left Go - Sarr’s man - wide open for an easy lay-up, dished by Ravena. The lead was back up to 5.

After Rob Manalang missed on a triple, Ravena fought off Sarr for a defensive rebound then attacked the lane again.

“[Our] coaches did a great job of scouting, and they scouted that Papi Sarr over-helps all the time, so every time I drive, I always make sure I know where my big man is,” Thirdy explained his thought process later on.

True enough, Sarr over-helped a second consecutive play, giving Ravena the opportunity to once again find Go for another lay-up with 2:52 left.

Close to a minute later, Ravena scored on the put-back, roared loud enough for the muted Adamson crowd to hear, and delivered the victory. Overall, Ravena finished with 14 points, 13 boards, and 5 assists - 4 in the final quarter alone, where Adamson had zero.

Before the season started, Ravena was looking for vindication after sitting out a year due to academic ineligibility, which involved seeing Belo break the hearts of Ateneo and putting a premature end to his brother’s prolific UAAP career from the stands.

“I just want to move forward and leave it behind, but also it’s motivation for me to give my all,” he said on Wednesday.

Ravena also shared something more personal 3 months ago. “I just want to be known as Thirdy Ravena. Not the ‘brother of Kiefer,’ or ‘son of Bong,’ but Thirdy Ravena.”

He’s probably not there yet, but he’s definitely on his way. – Rappler.com

Rooney in a fix as Arsenal gun for Man United

LONDON, UK – Damaged and derided, Wayne Rooney embodies Manchester United's delicate current predicament as they prepare for Arsenal's visit to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday, November 19 (Sunday morning, Manila).

Rooney has been splashed across Britain's newspapers this week after photographs emerged of him looking the worse for wear during a post-wedding party at the England team hotel last weekend.

The incident has prompted an apology from the player himself, news of an investigation by the Football Association and the unlikely backing of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Fortunately for Rooney, manager Jose Mourinho's anger over the matter is said to have been directed at the FA, for allowing the striker to go off the rails, rather than him.

But the 31-year-old is nonetheless expected to start on the bench against Arsenal, having been forced to withdraw from international duty with a minor knee injury.

Rooney found himself in the spotlight even before his late-night antics at the luxury Grove Hotel in Watford, north of England, last weekend.

Dropped by first Mourinho and then interim England manager Gareth Southgate, Rooney managed to force his way back into the starting XI for both club and country.

His last United display, in their 3-1 win at Swansea City prior to the international break, was one of his best in recent memory as he created a pair of goals for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But an injury sustained in England's 3-0 win over Scotland forced him out of Tuesday's 2-2 draw with Spain and he now looks likely to find himself back in the increasingly familiar setting of the bench.

Rooney has made a habit of tormenting Arsenal over the years, scoring 14 goals against them - a figure bettered only by his tally against Aston Villa (15).

As a swaggering 16-year-old with Everton, he scored his first ever Premier League goal against Arsenal in 2002 and they were also the victims for his first United league goal and 100th league goal overall.

But with Rooney sidelined and Ibrahimovic suspended, the teenage terror gunning for the Gunners this time around is expected to be Marcus Rashford.

The 19-year-old striker scored twice on his Premier League debut to inspire United to a 3-2 win over Arsenal in February and the London club's manager Arsene Wenger has not forgotten.

'Rashford killed us'

"The man who killed us last year was Marcus Rashford," said Wenger, whose side have not lost away in the league since that game.

"He took us completely by surprise."

Although Arsenal won 2-1 at United in the FA Cup in March 2015, they have not won a league game there since September 2006, while Wenger has never overcome Mourinho in the league in 11 attempts.

But although the historical omens would appear to favour United, the form and the momentum belong to Arsenal.

Whereas United have won just two of their last 8 league games, Arsenal have won 7 of their last 9, drawing the other two.

Wenger's men will provisionally go top if they prevail, which would leave United - sixth in the table ahead of the weekend's fixtures -- a yawning 9 points off the pace.

But midfielder Michael Carrick said this week: "We still feel we're well in touch.

"I know people are looking at it and saying we're drifting and we're not right at the top, but we still feel there's more to come and we've got a great chance of being up there."

Mourinho's preparations have not been helped by selection issues that could deprive him of 4 frontline defenders.

Centre-backs Chris Smalling (foot) and Eric Bailly (knee) are definitely out, while there are doubts over full-backs Antonio Valencia (broken arm) and Luke Shaw (leg).

Arsenal will be without flying right-back Hector Bellerin (ankle) and his Spanish compatriot Santi Cazorla (Achilles).

Alexis Sanchez, meanwhile, faces a fitness test on his hamstring and is not due to return from international duty with Chile until Friday. – Rappler.com

Floyd Mayweather throws cold water on comeback rumors

WASHINGTON, USA - Retired unbeaten former boxing champion Floyd Mayweather says he has retired for good and has no hunger for a ring return, adding he has too much fun traveling the world.

Mayweather told USA Today in New York on Wednesday that he has no need for the money or glory another bout could offer, especially a rematch with 37-year-old Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao, whom he defeated 18 months ago.

"A lot of fighters in the sport of boxing may want to retire, but they have to fight because they have to," Mayweather said. "I don't have to fight.

"I just made $300 million for fighting Pacquiao. I'm OK. Like I said before, I'm happy with my position. Once again, the money don't make me. I make money. I'm well off. I make smart moves and like I said before, I'm happy with where my career has went."

(READ: Pacquiao fuels Mayweather rematch rumors with jacket lining hint)

Mayweather, 39, said he attended Pacquaio's victory over Jessie Vargas earlier this month in Las Vegas "at the last minute" to "do something different" with his daughter.

Mayweather prompted talk of a Pacquiao rematch by saying the door was "absolutely" open to a comeback after he called it quits in September of last year upon defeating Andre Berto to finish 49-0.

(READ: Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch is 75% likely, says Arum)

Mayweather admits he tosses out differing notions on the comeback possibilities depending on how he feels any given day.

"Different days, I say different things. Different days, I feel different ways," Mayweather said. "Can Floyd Mayweather contradict himself? Absolutely. So that's why I know when I contradict myself, it doesn't mean I'm crazy.

"I'm only human. I'm not perfect. God only made one thing perfect: my boxing record."

And that's why it might not ever reach 50-0. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – La Salle big man Ben Mbala finished the UAAP elimination round with 92.43 statistical points and will be named the Season 79 MVP, it was revealed on Friday, November 18.

Mbala, who helped lead DLSU to a league-best 13-1 record, finished with averages of 20.6 points, 16.0 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, 1.4 steals, and 1.2 assists a game in his first season as a Green Archer.

Coming in second in the MVP race was Papi Sarr of Adamson, who compiled 69.86 SPs. Jeron Teng, Mbala’s La Salle teammate, is third with 57.33 SPs.

Rounding off the top 5 were Paul Desiderio of UP with 55.14 SPs and FEU’s Raymar Jose with 54.64 SPs.

Adamson freshman Jerrick Ahanmisi will win the Rookie of the Year after coming in 11th overall in the statistical race with 44.50 points.

La Salle will face Adamson in the Final Four, while Ateneo will take on FEU. The Green Archers and Blue Eagles have twice-to-beat advantage. – Rappler.com

Former Azkal Del Rosario calls lack of Suzuki Cup preparation 'a disgrace'

PREPARATION BUT NO PROMOTION? Misagh Bahadoran scores a volley goal in training. File photo by Bob Guerrero/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Former Philippine Azkals player Anton Del Rosario voiced his frustrations through social media about what he feels has been a lack of promotion for the upcoming group stage of the Suzuki Cup that takes place over the next few days on Friday, November 18.

Del Rosario, who played right back for the Philippine national team, wrote on Facebook, “We’re hosting the biggest [football] tournament for the country [and] there’s been nothing. This has to be a joke!”

The Philippines face Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand over the next 7 days, with each match to take place at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.

(READ: AFC Suzuki Cup: Azkals upbeat despite Patiño, Sato absence)

“I thought they’d turn around [and] push this month but NOTHING!” said Del Rosario. “Thailand training on an uncut UMAK field, embarrassing! Azkals training on turf fields in preparation to play on grass? Not one flier, no commercials, billboards, or even radio plugs.”

Del Rosario, who also plays for Loyola, then explained about the hard work put into earning an opportunity such as the one coming and how the Suzuki Cup can bring noise back to a sport that has lost its allure in the country in the past few years.

“Hosting this tourney is a dream [and] was a dream for us older guys who helped along the way. It all being taken for granted is unacceptable. This is an opportunity to help bring back awareness and support for the sport which was all lost in recent years. To see them take this opportunity and throw it away is a disgrace!”

MANILA, Philippines – Personalities in the Philippine sports landscape voiced their opinions on social media following the sudden burial of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at Libingan ng mga Bayani on Friday, November 18.

According to Amnesty International, there’s a recorded amount of 70,000 people imprisoned, 34,000 tortured, and 3,240 who were killed during the years when the Philippines was under Martial Law from 1972-1981.

Marcos was allowed to be buried at the Libingan following a Supreme Court decision. Word broke of the plans just before the procession began, and protests broke out across Metro Manila shortly after.

(TIMELINE: The Marcos burial controversy)

One of those who spoke out and was active with her displeasure was Gretchen Ho, Ateneo’s former star volleyball player and now a TV host.

Enchong Dee, a former star swimmer for La Salle in the UAAP who competed at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games and 2006 Asian Games, stuck to his beliefs of the late dictator.

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxer Jake Bornea made a tough stand but was ultimately outclassed by Andrew Selby Friday, November 18 (Saturday Manila time) at Wembley Arena in London, England.

Selby (7-0, 5 knockouts) of Barry, Wales used his height, speed and angles to befuddle the overmatched Bornea (11-2, 5 KOs) of General Santos City, opening a cut over his left eye and forcing the referee to stop the fight at 2:53 of the seventh round. The minor vacant IBF Inter-Continental flyweight belt was at stake, which should boost Selby's world ranking.

Selby, a 2012 Olympian and the younger brother of IBF featherweight titleholder Lee Selby, switched stances liberally while pounding flashy combinations to the head and body. Bornea had his twin brother, undefeated junior bantamweight Jake Bornea, in the corner, but neither could find an answer for Selby's skill.

In the end, Bornea could not channel the magic of Frank Cedeno, the Filipino boxer who knocked out England's Charlie Magri in that same building back in 1983 to win the WBC flyweight title.

The show was promoted by Cyclone Promotions and televised in the United Kingdom by Channel 5. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines - What do you do when the home team is getting blown out? Run DC Comics heroes onto the field to bring some levity.

That's what the Cincinnati Bearcats did during the second quarter of their 34-7 loss to the Memphis Tigers in their NCAA College Football American Athletic Conference (AAC) game on Friday, November 18 (Saturday Manila time).

The Caped Crusader, equipped with utility belt and all, booted the pigskin just over the uprights to the uproarious applause of the Cincinnati fans. It was the greatest sporting achievement by Batman since he defeated The Riddler by technical knockout after Riddler ran from the boxing ring back in Season 3 in 1967.

Afterwards, the commentator calling the game for CBS Sports Network put the moment in perspective,

"When your team's down 20-0 and you're in this slide, they've lost 3 straight, 5 of 6, you'll cheer for anything if you're a Bearcat fan right now,"

ON A ROLL. The NU Pep Squad continues to reign supreme over the UAAP CDC. Josh Albelda/RAPPLER

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Why not add more history?

The National University Pep Squad reigned supreme once again in the annual UAAP Cheerdance Competition, coming in first place for the fourth straight year on Saturday, November 19, at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.

With perennial contender UP opting not to participate in this year’s competition, NU was expected to defeat the 6 other schools and lived up to expectations with a performance which had little to no flaws and was impressively executed.

FEU and Adamson came in second and third places, respectively.

National U was the only squad to score above 700 points, finishing with 711. FEU, which had 658.5 points, barely scraped by Adamson’s 655.

UST wasn’t so far behind at fourth with 650 points, while UE placed sixth with 645.

La Salle and Ateneo finished as the last placers with 560.5 and 512 points, respectively.

NU also came in first place in the group stunts category, while UST and FEU rounded off the top 3.

LOS ANGELES, USA - Russell Westbrook scored his fourth triple double of the season as Oklahoma City cruised to a comfortable win over the visiting Brooklyn Nets on Friday, November 18 (Saturday Manila time).

Westbrook, a man on a mission for the Thunder this season following Kevin Durant's departure, finished with 30 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists to take his personal tally to 41 career triple-doubles.

More immediately, Westbrook's performance steered the Thunder to a comfortable 124-105 win at the Chesapeake Energy Arena, helping his team improve to 8-5 for the season.

{source}<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ruxwrvSZVoQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

The 28-year-old is only the second player in NBA history to amass 13,000 points, 3,400 rebounds and 4,500 assists in his first 600 career games.

Legendary former Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks player Oscar Robertson was the first to reach that milestone.

"He's unique. Really unique," Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said of Westbrook after his side's loss.

"Everything he brings to the table is competitiveness. How fast he is, how strong he is. Very impressive player."

Oklahoma City's Victor Oladipo gave Westbrook vital back up with 26 points and six assists while New Zealand center Steven Adams added 15 and six boards.

"I was just playing the game, man," said Oladipo. "Taking it one game at a time, one possession at a time."

Brook Lopez led scoring for Brooklyn with 22 points. Bojan Bogdanovic added 13 points, while Anthony Bennett finished with 12 points as well.

Atkinson, meanwhile, was concerned about his team's failure to compete on the boards, where they were outmuscled 46-30.

"That's an issue," Atkinson said. "Physically they are a tough team. That's what they do. They are a physical team, big team. Definitely an area of improvement for us." – Rappler.com
