Jimmy Alapag: At the end of the day, it's all courage

MIGHTY MOUSE. Jimmy Alapag, the beloved basketball star of Filipinos, has proven time and again that you don't have to be tall to achieve great things in life – you must only have courage. File Photo from FIBA.com

MANILA, Philippines – Rappler interviewed Jimmy Alapag on November 7 about his thoughts on courage, as part of Rappler's conversation on #InspireCourage. The 38-year-old Alapag, captain of national team Gilas Pilipinas, announced on November 3 that he is walking away from an illustrious 13-year stint with the Philippine Basketball Association.

I think courage is just the ability and the mindset to chase and reach for whatever dreams or goals that you have for your life – without any fear of failure. It’s not easy to step out of your comfort zone. And it takes tremendous amount of courage to leap out there and chase what some people might tell you can’t be done.

You might not think it can’t be done, but courage is to go out there and jump with both feet in and work tirelessly to achieve whatever goals or dreams that you have for yourself, and again without any fear of failing. And for the times that you do (fail), courage means having to get back up and keep climbing and keep pushing.

I think at the end of the day it’s all courage, just in different aspects of life.

[Take] someone who’s in the military who fights for our safety and our lives. That's an incredible amount of courage as well, putting your life on the line for a lot of people who are strangers to you. Fighting for the safety of the country, that might be the highest amount of courage that you could show because you’re putting your own life at stake.

Even for athletes – athletes who are struggling in whatever story they might have and with whatever obstacles they might face. It just takes a lot of courage to find a way to overcome them.

Obviously there are different avenues that you can take, but without courage your chances of getting over the hump and reaching that best version of yourself is almost impossible– Rappler.com

Ex-boxer steers young Belgians away from jihad

FIGHT AGAINST JIHAD. Bea Diallo (R), seen against rival Raymond Joval during his fighting days in 2005, has found a new cause to fight for. Photo by Etienne Ansotte/Belga/AFP

BRUSSELS, Belgium - He was once a middleweight boxer and is now a Belgian lawmaker, but Bea Diallo says he understands what turns youngsters to the dark side.

Diallo, a Liberian-born Muslim, says he is using the lessons he learned in the school of hard knocks to motivate young Belgians and even steer some away from Islamic extremism.

"Boxing helped me become the man that I am today," Diallo told AFP after arriving from parliament to don a red bandana and boxing garb for a coaching session at his gym.

"Now I am trying to transform this force and this teaching that I have received for a generation that feels that it is lost and dropping out of society."

Diallo, the child of a Guinean diplomat father and a Senegalese mother, was caught up in violence in his own youth.

He became "ultra-violent, violent in the extreme" after an attack by skinheads in France in which a friend lost an eye, he said.

"If there had been the same context as today, where people are able to come and brainwash you, I could have ended up waging jihad."

Since those dark days, Diallo has turned his life around.

After boxing, the 45-year-old married father of four became a coach, involved in running a gym, as well as serving as a city alderman and an elected member of the Brussels-capital parliament.

A familiar presence on Belgian TV, the socialist politician works on youth, employment and social integration while calling for democracy in Guinea, the country of his father's birth.

Ringside seat

Meanwhile his gym has given him a ringside seat at the growth of militant Islam in Belgium, the European country with the highest per capita number of fighters who have joined jihad in Syria and Iraq, a figure estimated at 465.

Diallo said some martial arts gyms even train young Belgians to wage jihad - a phenomenon confirmed by Belgian judicial sources.

He said his Emergence XL gym refuses to admit anyone who comes to radicalise youngsters.

Diallo often huddles in the ring with his students after sparring sessions to discuss Islam and other issues, claiming he managed to dissuade one of them from becoming radicalised.

Hassan Bousetta, a socialist politician and university professor, said Diallo is a role model for many young Muslims from Belgium's large Moroccan minority.

Although not yet a political "heavyweight", Bousetta said "he would become a national role model the day he becomes a minister".

Belgium's RTL television has meanwhile hailed him as a "symbol of successful integration in our country."

But it nearly all went wrong for him.

He went astray in his own youth before learning to channel his rage against injustice, the kind that drives some now toward extremism.

Frightened and embittered by the skinhead attack when he was living in Paris, he got into fights and involved in gangs.

But he began emerging from what he called "a vicious cycle" after his father moved the family to Brussels. There, Diallo began reading the works of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi.

Saved by boxing

At 16 Diallo began boxing, immediately taking to its self-discipline and egalitarian spirit. He also began studying hard in high school and university.

In 1998, he beat American Rob Bleakley for the middleweight International Boxing Federation crown before a 50,000 crowd in Conakry and an international satellite television audience. He held the title for 6 years.

{source}<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QQ0Ggv1qccw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

He said he learned the true meaning of jihad - "struggle" in Arabic - as the betterment of himself, and now wants to share his experience with a young "generation that is sometimes lost."

Diallo said he feels "very close" to young Belgians of Moroccan origin, sharing an African Muslim heritage and a legacy of colonialism, as well as the experience of being outsiders.

The former prize fighter pulls no punches in tackling apparent jihadist sympathies.

When he called for a moment of silence after the March 22 Islamic State bombings that killed 32 people in Brussels, some grumbled - but he scolded them.

"I said: 'What, why are you making these faces?' I said: 'Do you know who died? Muslims, Christians, Jews, Arabs, blacks and whites. They targeted everyone.'"

He warned them: "It's not Islam's fight against the West. It's a fight against all of you." – Rappler.com

Team Lakay’s Mark Sangiao happy for ‘brother’ Eduard Folayang

HAPPY TIMES. Trainer Mark Sangiao (L) has been at Eduard Folayang's side in good times and bad. Photo from ONE Championship

MANILA, Philippines – As the entire Philippine mixed martial arts (MMA) community erupted in celebration when Eduard Folayang pulled off a major upset victory over Shinya Aoki to capture the ONE Championship lightweight belt, there is no one as more ecstatic than Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao.

When referee Yuji Shimada stopped the fight and awarded a third-round knockout victory to Folayang, Sangiao hurriedly dashed to the cage to celebrate his longtime comrade’s crowning glory.

“It was an emotional moment. I almost cried. Eduard is a brother to me. Seeing him with the title around his waist felt like I also won the belt. I can't even explain the happiness that I am feeling right now," Sangiao shared in an interview with Rappler.

The brotherhood between Sangiao and Folayang stemmed from their heydays in the Philippine national Wushu team, competing side-by-side in international tournaments.

Sangiao then founded Team Lakay, which has been widely associated with the Philippine MMA scene due to the big number of notable homegrown talents that it has produced since its inception in 2003.

One of Sangiao’s top students in his fight camp is Folayang, who has served as the captain and big brother to the other Team Lakay fighters.

Throughout the 9-year MMA career of Folayang, Sangiao never missed a bout as he always sat on his coach’s stool and extended his guidance whether in victory or defeat.

According to Sangiao, he could not help being emotional because he witnessed the sacrifices that Folayang went through to have his hand raised against Aoki.

“I consider Eduard as part of my family. If you have a brother like Eduard, you would want the best for him.  Eventually, he got what’s best for him. He sacrificed a lot for this win. I’m just so happy,” Sangiao stated.

Meanwhile, Folayang gave credit to the game plan that Sangiao carefully devised for months.

“Coach Mark is the big brain of Team Lakay. We studied a lot of videos of Aoki’s past fights. We gathered every resource available just to have a good game plan. I won’t be here without him,” Folayang said of Sangiao.

Smiles and tears filled the faces of Sangiao and Folayang as a rain of confetti fell inside the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

During his coronation as the newly-minted ONE Championship lightweight kingpin, Folayang removed the gold-plated strap from his waist and fastened it around Sangiao as a gesture of appreciation for his mentor.

“Coach Mark was always there for me. In times of defeat, he chose to stay. This title is also for him. My victory is also his victory,” Folayang stressed. – Rappler.com

PBA APP. The PBA launches its own mobile app. Photo by Josh Albelda/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Basketball Association ushered in its 42nd season, and a new age of venturing further into digital, with the launch of its own smartphone app, the league announced during the preseason press conference on Monday, November 19 at Makati Shangri-La.

The app is already available for free download on Apple's App Store and Android's Google Play.

"This app should be a lifestyle, it should be a habit," said this season's PBA chair Mikee Romero, who noted the league is eyeing a more interactive approach to connecting with its fans.

The app is part of the league's new direction toward reaching out to more of its digital-native millenial fans, as well as tapping into new audiences.

It is designed to become the source of all things PBA, from latest news and results to full schedules and standings, as well as team rosters, individual and team stats, and player biographies.

There's also a tab for stat leaders and all of the PBA's social media channels – Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – can be accessed in-app.

Events and promos can also be accessed through the app, including the PBA Fantasy Basketball game.

Some future features that have yet to be launched include PBA Live, where games can be livestreamed, the PBA Store, the PBA Cafe, and a log-in option for users to be able to customize the news and push notifications they receive.

"In order for us to quantify or to look at how big the app can be, let's just say for example that there's an existing 5 million watchers of the PBA at any game in the traditional television, this app in two years' time we want to add another 5 million," Romero said.

"That's the type of app that we're looking at, if just to quantify it. I'm not saying that's the exact number of watchers of the PBA during regular games, but that's the kind of exponential growth that we want for this app."

The app is part of a number of changes the league is trying out for its 2016-17 season, which includes a potential full All-Star Week played regionally, a possible invitational for Asian club teams, and the removal of the import handicap system for the last two conferences.

(READ: PBA eyes invitational for Asian teams, removal of import handicapping)

These changes come at the heels of a season in which the PBA was criticized for its low gate attendance, with fans taking to social media to point out empty seats in game photos and suggesting their own ideas and innovations. – Rappler.com

DROPPING HINTS. Manny Pacquiao drops hints about a possible Floyd Mayweather rematch with his latest wardrobe choice. Photo from Pacquiao's Facebook page

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao continues to tease the possibility of a second fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr as he showed off a sports coat interior with himself throwing a right hand punch on the right side and Mayweather defending one on the left side.

Pacquiao could be hinting that in a rematch he'd still have something - ahem - up his sleeve.

{source}<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMannyPacquiao%2Fposts%2F1625855614385125%3A0&width=500" width="500" height="587" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true"></iframe>{/source}

Pacquiao, who lost a unanimous decision to Mayweather in the sport's most financially lucrative fight in May of 2015, has consistently petitioned for a rematch, claiming he had injured his right shoulder in training and reinjured it during the fight.

Mayweather hasn't fought since September of 2015 but is rumored to be back in training again despite being 3 months from his 40th birthday.

The rumors of a rematch were kicked into high gear when Mayweather showed up at ringside for Pacquiao's most recent fight, a unanimous decision win over Jessie Vargas to win the WBO welterweight title for a third time on November 5. Pacquiao says he had invited Mayweather to be ringside.

Their first fight sold a reported 4.4 million pay-per-view buys, a record figure, to generate $425 million in revenue, according to Forbes, while breaking another record with a $72 million live gate. Mayweather is estimated to have earned $200 million while Pacquiao earned an estimated $120 million. – Rappler.com

OKLAHOMA CITY, USA - Serge Ibaka didn't mince his words when asked what it was like to lift the Orlando Magic to a 119-117 win in his first game back against his former Oklahoma City team.

"I'm not going to lie to you," he said. "It felt good."

The 27-year-old Congolese Ibaka made the most of his return to Oklahoma City, scoring 31 points, including the game-winning jumper with 0.4 seconds left.

"Everybody was very happy for Serge," teammate Evan Fournier said. "It was a very important game for him. He probably won't tell you guys this, but I'm pretty sure it was.

{source}<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/A_iq8GpncJg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

"After playing seven years in this city, you want to play good against that city and the team that traded you."

Ibaka finished with 13 of 19 shooting from the field, 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

Fournier was also on fire, scoring 21 points while Elfrid Payton added 23 points for Orlando.

After playing for the Thunder for seven years, Ibaka was shipped in the offseason when many around the Thunder believed his skills were in a decline.

He went head-to-head with Thunder star Russell Westbrook who had his third triple-double of the season with 41 points, 16 assists and 12 rebounds.

It was the first time in two years Oklahoma City lost when Westbrook registered a triple-double.

Thunder center Enes Kanter came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 8 rebounds. Andre Roberson scored 14 points to go with 4 blocked shots.

In the final minute, the Thunder gave the ball to Westbrook, and Ibaka fouled him while attempting a 3-pointer.

He made two-of-three from the foul line and Oklahoma City went up 117-114 with 37 seconds. It didn't last long as Fournier came down and tied the contest with another three-pointer.

Westbrook tried to put the Thunder ahead with a shot from the free throw line. But it was off and the Magic got the rebound with 11 seconds on the clock.

Ibaka wouldn't be denied. He took the ball and drove baseline and drilled a short jump shot over two Thunder players with 0.4 left in the game. – Rappler.com

CLOSE WIN. The New York Giants held on to win following a risky fourth down touchdown pass late in the game. Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images/AFP

EAST RUTHERFORD, USA - New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning threw three touchdown passes, including the game-winner to receiver Sterling Shepard as the Giants toppled the Cincinnati Bengals 21-20 at MetLife Stadium on Monday, November 14 (Tuesday Manila time).

"When we moved the ball and got in the red zone we scored touchdowns and that is what you have to do in this league," Manning said. "We finished strong and got the win."

The Giants held a 14-10 halftime lead, but the Bengals started quickly by taking advantage of their first possession when play resumed.

On the first play of the half, Alex Erickson broke free for an 84-yard kickoff return to give the Bengals first-and-10 on the Giants' 13.

Two plays later - both runs by running back Jeremy Hill - and the Bengals were back on top of the Giants 17-14 thanks to Hill's nine-yard touchdown run, the first of 10 unanswered points by the Bengals.

Then Erickson did it again a few minutes later, this time with an 18-yard punt return that gave his team excellent starting field position.

The Bengals increased their lead to 20-14 on kicker Mike Nugent's 38 yard field goal.

The Giants got on the board again at the beginning of the fourth quarter when Manning connected with Shepard for a three-yard touchdown pass on fourth down. That score put New York back on top 21-20.

"Shepard ran a great route and got a big time play right there," Manning said.

With the win, the Giants improved to 6-3 on the season and retained their hold on second place in the NFC East. They'll close out their three-game home stand next week against the Chicago Bears.

The Bengals return home to host the Buffalo Bills next week. – Rappler.com

Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch is 75% likely, says Arum

STILL GOING. Manny Pacquiao has people talking about a Mayweather rematch after beating Jessie Vargas to reclaim the WBO welterweight title. Photo by Ted Aljibe/AFP

MANILA, Philippines - Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has teased fans about a possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather, smiling as he gamely showed off a suit with pictures of himself and Mayweather on the lining.

Pacquiao, 37, posted on his social media accounts Monday a photo of himself wearing the suit with his picture on the right side of the coat and Mayweather's on the left.

"Like my jacket?", Pacquiao, who was elected to the Philippines Senate in May, captioned the photo.

Pacquiao's post, which had received 215,000 likes on Facebook by Tuesday, fuelled talk of "Pacquiao-Mayweather 2" which began after he won the World Boxing Organization welterweight title from Jessie Vargas earlier this month.

Mayweather had taken up an invitation from Pacquiao to watch the Filipino multiple world champion's Las Vegas comeback from ringside.

Pacquiao said after the fight that he was eager to avenge his 2015 loss to Mayweather in the richest fight in history.

"Not only for myself, but the fans of boxing want the rematch, then why not? We can easily talk about that it is not a problem," Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said last week a rematch was likely.

"I give it 75 percent," Arum told ESPN.

"Do I know it's gonna happen? No. Do I know if Floyd wants the fight? No. I know nothing more than the public knows at this point and what I observed."

Pacquiao's camp said Tuesday, however, that talk of a rematch could wait.

"Boxing is not yet in his mind right now," Pacquiao's media relations chief Aquiles Zonio told AFP. "He's focusing on his legislative works.

"It will be known by January when will be his next fight and who will be his next opponent." – Rappler.com

Eduard Folayang happy with decision to stay in ONE Championship

HAPPY. Eduard Folayang is happy to stay at ONE Championship. Photo from ONE Championship

MANILA, Philippines – After capturing the ONE Championship lightweight belt at the expense of Shinya Aoki over the weekend, Eduard Folayang believes that he made a good decision to stay with the Singapore-based mixed martial arts (MMA) organization.

The 32-year-old Baguio City native almost explored the free agent market after his exclusive deal with ONE Championship expired last March, but he opted to re-sign with the same MMA promotion when it invoked its “right to match” clause.

At that time, Folayang was vocal with his desire of fighting at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s second live event in the Philippines on October 16, which was eventually cancelled after BJ Penn pulled out his headlining bout versus Ricardo Lamas.

Even though Folayang admitted that he did receive offers from different MMA companies, he chose to put more weight on ONE Championship.

Folayang stressed that when he inked a two-year contract extension with ONE Championship, the organization did not think twice in giving him the opportunity to vie for a world title.

“I have no regrets of signing back with ONE Championship because they gave me the opportunity to fight for the world lightweight title. Also, I have to give it to them because they are doing an excellent job in promoting the sport of MMA,” he told Rappler.

After Folayang signed on the dotted line of his new contract, he immediately received a title eliminator against Australian stalwart Adrian Pang, whom he defeated by unanimous decision to secure a date with Aoki.

Folayang turned his dream of becoming an MMA world champion into a reality by beating Aoki via third-round stoppage in the main event of ONE Championship’s “Defending Honor” card on Friday, November 11.

Folayang, who has been a ONE Championship staple since the company’s inception in 2011 and has fought 10 of his last 12 outings under the promotion’s umbrella, foresees himself hanging up his gloves with the organization.

“I see it that way as long as I can still compete,” he said. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-American fighter Mark Striegl will have a new opponent for his return to active competition as he is set to square off with Bulgarian combatant Sotir Kichuhov on the undercard of ONE Championship’s “Age of Domination” event on December 2.

Striegl was supposed to face Rafael Nunes, but the Brazilian standout pulled out of the bout due to undisclosed reasons.

ONE Championship found a replacement in Kichuhov, who locks horns with Striegl in a 3-round catchweight contest.

Striegl has been out of action since December 2015 when he suffered a painful third-round submission loss at the hands of Filipino-Australian stalwart Reece McLaren.

The 28-year-old from Baguio City was supposed to make his comeback earlier this year, but his layoff was extended after he contracted bronchitis.

Striegl made his promotional debut under the ONE Championship banner in April 2015 by submitting Casey Suire via first-round rear-naked choke.

The 5-foot-8 "Mugen" established himself as one of the top Filipino mixed martial arts competitors with stints in different organizations across the Asian region such as Pacific Xtreme Combat, Legend FC and Ultimate Reality Combat Championship, to name a few.

In addition, he holds an impressive prizefighting record of 14-2, with 12 wins coming by submission.

Meanwhile, Kichuhov (13-4) is suffering from a two-fight losing skid and was last seen inside the ONE Championship cage when he yielded to Yusup Saadulaev via second-round submission in September 2015.

Kichuhov has only gone the distance thrice in his 13 wins, owning 8 submission victories and 3 knockout triumphs.

Messi magic sparks Argentina, Brazil marches on in World Cup qualifiers

VICTORY. Argentina's Angel Di Maria (L) celebrates with teammate Lionel Messi after scoring against Colombia during their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier football match in San Juan, Argentina, on November 15, 2016.
EITAN ABRAMOVICH / AFP

MONTEVIDEOUruguay – Lionel Messi produced a magical display to get Argentina's World Cup qualification back on track Tuesday, November 15 (Wednesday in Manila) as Brazil notched their sixth consecutive victory to put one foot in the 2018 finals in Russia.

Messi curled home a stunning 30-yard free-kick and set up goals for Lucas Pratto and Angel Di Maria in a 3-0 win over Colombia in San Juan.

The victory elevated Argentina into the qualifying places after a disastrous run of results which saw them take just two points from their previous four games.

But the feelgood factor generated by the result was overshadowed by a media boycott imposed by a furious Messi and his Argentina teammates after the final whistle.

Messi said the Albiceleste's players were incensed by a claim made by an Argentine journalist that forward Ezequiel Lavezzi had been caught smoking marijuana in the camp.

Lavezzi, who was not included on the substitutes bench against Colombia, has angrily denied the claims.

"We have made the decision not to talk to the press anymore, obviously you know why," said Messi, who has an often tense relationship with Argentina's media.

"There were a lot of accusations, a lot of disrespect, and the accusations they made against 'Pocho' (Lavezzi) are very serious.

"We know that most of you guys don't play that game of disrespect. We can be criticized if we lose, or win, or if we play well or badly. But this is getting into personal lives. If we don't put a stop to it now, we'll never stop it."

Tuesday's win left Argentina in fifth spot in the 10-team standings, with 19 points from 12 games. The top 4 sides qualify automatically for the 2018 finals while the fifth-placed team goes into a play-off with the first-placed team from the Oceania zone.

Brazil coasting to Russia

Colombia meanwhile slipped to sixth place following the defeat, one point behind Argentina.

While Argentina has made hard work of qualification so far, Brazil appears to be coasting towards Russia.

Only a miraculous sequence of results is likely to deny them an automatic qualifying place following Tuesday's 2-0 win over Peru in Lima.

Manchester City-bound teenager Gabriel Jesus was the hero once more, scoring one goal and laying on another for Renato Augusto to give Brazil a sixth consecutive win under new coach Tite.

The result left Brazil 4 points clear at the top of the standings with 27 points from 12 games.

In qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup, 28 points was enough to guarantee automatic qualification.

With 6 games left, Brazil should be safe with something to spare.

In Santiago meanwhile, Chile continued its recovery with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Uruguay.

Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez was the hero, scoring twice for the Chileans in the second half after Eduardo Vargas had cancelled out Edinson Cavani's first-half opener for Uruguay.

Sanchez and Chile had risked the wrath of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger after playing despite injuring a hamstring during training last week.

Wenger had expressed fear Chile had made a "suicidal" decision by playing Sanchez after the injury.

But the in-form striker showed no sign of ill-health with two well-taken goals to seal a crucial 3 points.

Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo saved a late penalty from Luis Suarez as the two-time Copa America winners hung on for the win.

In other games Tuesday, Bolivia jolted Paraguay with a 1-0 win in La Paz while Venezuela slipped to the bottom of the standings after Ecuador coasted to a 3-0 victory in Quito.

Ecuador is now third in the standings, 3 points behind second-placed Uruguay. – Oscar Laski, Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Wendell Comboy spearheaded a deciding 10-2 run to end the game while Axel Iñigo buried the dagger triple as Far Eastern University survived University of the East, 64-61, in the UAAP Season 79 men's basketball tournament on Wednesday, November 16 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Tamaraws still have hope of gaining a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four as long as the Adamson Soaring Falcons win by at least 31 points over the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the day's second game.

The defending champions overturned a 9-point Red Warriors lead in the fourth quarter with Comboy sparking the rally in the final 3 minutes, shoving FEU ahead 60-59 with 1:36 left.

Iñigo capped off his game-high 16-point performance with the dagger trey with 25 seconds on the clock for the 63-59 cushion. Iñigo missed just one of his 7 field goals and added 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

"I really wanted to win today," Iñigo said in Filipino after the game. "I just thought I really wanted to shoot the ball. I felt I could shoot it."

Raymar Jose had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Richard Escoto also had 11. Comboy wound up with 10 markers, 5 boards, 4 dimes, and two steals.

Paul Varilla paced the Warriors with 13 points and 5 rebounds as Philip Manalang, Emil Palma, and Rey Acuno all had 8 markers apiece.

MANILA, Philippines – After watching his FEU Tamaraws snap a 3-game losing streak and end the Season 79 elimination round with a 9-5 record, head coach Nash Racela told reporters about his concerns regarding the potential “dream matchup” being talked about for this year’s UAAP Finals.

Ang problema ko (My problem) is the dream matchup, because now people are putting it into peoples’ minds na (that) there’s a dream matchup,” said Racela.

“I don’t know. I just read about it. They said there’s a dream matchup. They missed it for a number of years, na (that) now everybody wants to see that.”

Racela didn’t specifically point to La Salle versus Ateneo as the dream matchup he was referring to, but it was apparent he was talking about the 2 teams given the history of the Green Archers-Blue Eagles rivalry.

Arguably the biggest rivalry in Philippine college basketball, La Salle and Ateneo haven’t met in a UAAP Finals in 8 years.

“That’s my concern, kung ipipilit nila yun (if they will force it), then that’s really a concern for us, because I know FEU and Adamson both want to be in the finals, and I think we are both also deserving to be there,” said Racela.

“We’ll try our best to deny that dream, cause I have a better dream.”

Racela then added in jest, “I’ll tell you about it later on.”

The Tamaraws’ seed in the Final Four will be determined by the ongoing Ateneo-Adamson game. Landing fourth means FEU takes on La Salle, its current biggest rival in the league. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines - Sonny Boy Jaro, a former WBC flyweight champion, kept his career alive with a unanimous decision win over Marjun Pantilgan Wednesday, November 16 at Makati Cinema Square in Makati City, Philippines.

The scores were 99-92, 96-94 and 97-93, all for the Silay City, Iloilo native Jaro, who picks up the WBC International Super Flyweight title with the win. There were no knockdowns though Jaro (43-13-5, 30 knockouts) rocked Pantilgan (11-4, 10 KOs) several times as his heavy left jab and body punches pounded away at his opponent's high guard.

Pantilgan, who is 12 years younger than Jaro at age 22, had his best round of the fight in the fifth, landing a few strong rights against the lowered gloves of Jaro. Jaro regained control in the sixth and showed surprising bounce in his legs and defense despite his age and inactivity.

Jaro, who shocked the boxing world in 2012 by ending the long reign of Pongsaklek Wonjongkam to win the flyweight championship, said he hoped returning from a 13-month will be enough to reinsert him into the rankings at 115 pounds.

The show was promoted by Anson Tiu Co's Shape-up Promotions.

In the co-featured bout, junior flyweight Edward Heno (9-0-4, 2 knockouts) of Pasay City dropped tricky journeyman Roque Lauro (13-20-5, 3 KOs)) on a southpaw right hook and finished him later in round 6 at the 2:37 mark.

The night's most entertaining bout saw Philippine-based Japanese bantamweight Kyota Otsaka (5-2-2, 3 KOs) battling Glenn Calacar to a majority draw by the scores of 57-57 on two cards and 58-56 on the third.

Other results

Featherweight Arnel Baconaje (6-2, 6 KOs) needed just one shot to put away Jeson Berwela (4-23, 2 KOs) at 2:59 of round one. Baconaje of San Rafael Iloilo landed a single left hook which sent his opponent crashing down. Berwela attempted a WWE-style kip-up to beat the count at 8 but it turns out he isn't Shawn Michaels.

Super bantamweight Cris Falcon Ocana (7-1-1, 5 KOs) dropped Julius Bala (4-5, 2 KOs) with a right hand late in the fifth round and finished him off with a flurry at the 2:12 mark. Ocana, 18, of Pasay City showed a consistent body attack early before moving his attack upstairs.

Lightweight Glen Bismanos (2-1, 2 KOs) stopped Romano Villanueva at 1:23 of the first round. Bismanos had no chance to show what kind of fighter he was as Villanueva turned his back shortly after the first exchange and complained of an eye injury.

Rivas gets title shot

Filipina boxer Carleans Rivas (5-3-3) tells Rappler she will face Japanese fighter Chaoz Minowa (2-0) for the vacant OPBF flyweight title on December 13 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. (READ: Carleans Rivas: Beauty outside, beast inside)

Rivas, 27, is in training in her native Rizal province but was in attendance for Wednesday's fight card. Rivas last fought in February, avenging a 2014 loss to Lady Love Sampiton by unanimous decision.

Anson Tiu Co said he's looking to have his fighter Richard Pumicpic (18-8-2, 6 KOs) of Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte return to action in January in the Philippines. Pumicpic, 26, fought last month in Mexico, nearly stopping Cesar Juarez in a 10-round points loss that raised his stock. – Rappler.com

Messi will end his career with Barca, predicts club president

BARCELONA, Spain - Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu predicted Wednesday, November 16 that Lionel Messi would not only extend his contract with the Catalan club but also end his playing days there too.

Speaking at the launch of a 55 million euros ($59 million) a year shirt sponsorship deal Bartomeu told journalists he was "relaxed about Messi's contract".

With the clock ticking and only 18 months left on Messi's deal the club want to extend it, as they did with Neymar and as they are trying to do with Luis Suarez.

"We are all convinced that he will end his playing days at the heart of this club. All the socios (stake-holding fans) believe it, it's just a question of how we get over the line," he said.

"This player has led us to our great sporting successes in recent years and he will continue to do so, he's far from finished."

Spanish sports daily Marca had sown doubt over the 29-year-old Messi's future on Monday with claims the Argentine was stalling over a new deal and flirting instead with the idea of joining his former coach Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Brazilian superstar Neymar signed a new 5-year contract with Barcelona in October that will keep the 24-year-old at the Spanish champions until 2021, saying he felt "at home" at the Camp Nou.

European Golden Shoe winner Luis Suarez said last week negotiations to extend his contract with Barcelona until 2021 were running smoothly. – Rappler.com
