PARIS, France – Brazilian football legend Pele will spend one more night in hospital in Paris "as a precaution" after being taken ill earlier this week, his advisor told AFP on Sunday, April 7 (Monday, April 8, Philippine time).

A date for the 78-year-old's discharge has not been officially announced by the hospital which is based in the Paris suburbs.

"He will spend the night (Sunday to Monday), we do not want to take risks and we're in no hurry," said the advisor, having on Saturday morning announced that Pele would definitely return Monday to Sao Paulo.

"The doctors are making decisions daily and we will take maximum precautions until we leave."

The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to a hospital with a urinary tract infection on Wednesday, the day after appearing at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.

Brazilian news website G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to Brazil but had been delayed by further tests and would stay under observation until he was 100 percent.

The infection was not serious and was under control, according to members of Pele's entourage.

"Thank you so much for all the love! The antibiotics are working," Pele tweeted on Friday. "I'm feeling much better and I think I'm ready to play again!"

The event in Paris was originally scheduled for November but the Brazilian "was not in a position to travel."

Pele has had several health issues in recent years.

A similar infection put him in intensive care in November 2014.

In 2016, Pele – who played 1,363 professional matches, scoring 1,281 goals – was unable to light the flame at the Rio Olympics because of severe pain in the hip.

"I was not physically fit to participate in the opening of the Games," he said at the time.

In January 2018, he cancelled a trip to London fearing a "stressful" and "tiring" journey. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Kat Tolentino's consistent firepower for the Ateneo Lady Eagles catapulted them to their tenth-straight Final Four appearance in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament.

Despite Ateneo delivering a balanced scoring effort in its most recent games, the Lady Eagles continued to rely on Tolentino's scoring which merited her second UAAP Player of the Week title.

The 24-year-old spiker powered the Lady Eagles with 11 points off 9 attacks and 2 blocks in a straight-set win over Season 80 runner-up Far Eastern University (FEU).

Last Sunday, April 7, Tolentino tallied 13 points to lead the Lady Eagles past the gritty National University Lady Bulldogs that allowed Ateneo to become the first team to nail a Final Four spot.

There's no reason for Ateneo to be complacent despite securing a semifinal berth, so the Filipino-Canadian will make sure that Ateneo will finish strong in its remaining games of the season.

"We have to challenge ourselves, it doesn't matter who we're playing and I think we just always have to win convincingly and we'll learn from this," promised Tolentino.

Tolentino is also one of the MVP candidates of the season as she emerged as the league's third-best blocker behind teammate Maddie Madayag while running in 4th in the best spiker category.

Ateneo's leading scorer also edged out her own teammate Deanna Wong and FEU's Heather Guino-o for the weekly plum handed out by print and online scribes covering the beat. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao has followed rival Floyd Mayweather's suit after he inked a deal with Japanese MMA promotion Rizin Fighting Federation early Monday, April 8.

Rizin chief Nobuyuki Sakakibara flew to the Philippines to have Pacquiao sign the papers as the Filipino boxing legend is set to be "involved in a way" in Rizin 15, which will be staged on April 21.

Sakakibara said the final plans will be announced when he returns to Japan.

Rizin was the same organization which had Mayweather come out of his retirement momentarily to see action in an exhibition match on New Year's Eve.

The undefeated American boxer toyed with Japanese kickboxing phenom Tenshin Nasukawa, scoring a technical knockout win with under a minute left in the 1st round.

It was reported that Mayweather raked in a whopping $9 million for the bout, meaning he earned $4.5 million for every minute on the ring. Rappler.com

The women who played Bobby Fischer

MANILA, Philippines – What does one feel playing face-to-face against a chess legend?

A few weeks before the 1976 Haifa Chess Olympiad, former national women's champion Lita Alvarez received a call from then World Chess Federation vice president Florencio Campomanes. Did she want to play Bobby Fischer, and if yes, he would fetch her at noon at Solidbank and go to Manila Hotel.

"Campo fetched me by car and we drove to the Manila Hotel where I met Fischer. We played near the swimming pool. He was business-like. He took a white pawn in one hand and a black pawn in the other and then crossed his wrist. He said, 'Choose.' I picked the right hand and it was a black pawn," recounted Alvarez in an interview Sunday, March 31.

"He beat me easily," added Alvarez, now 78.

Fischer, the American who lost his world title by forfeit in 1975 to Anatoly Karpov of the then Soviet Union, was visiting the Philippines to discuss with Campomanes holding a big match. Campomanes asked him if he would agree to play the men's and women's team before they head for Haifa, Israel. Fischer agreed.

Fischer met the women's team, led by then national champion Hermie Cartel, physics and chemistry teacher Mila Emperado, student Andrea Lizares, and Alvarez, who won the 1956 national women's championship at the age of 16. The games were held at the house of Lizares' aunt in Urdaneta Village.

An honor to play

"It was a honor to play him," recalled Emperado. Lizares remembered some table tennis sessions with Fischer. It was indeed a rare sight to see Fischer, who seldom appeared in public, to be seen here.

A photo by Alvarez preserves part of the mystique and also shows how far Philippine women's chess advanced since she won the first of her 3 titles at the age of 16 in 1956.

"The (now defunct) Evening News sponsored the tournament and we got daily coverage," said Alvarez, her eyes glinting with the memory. "I was the muse of the Pasig Chess Club and my father taught me a few months before."

Many strong players, led by the country's first International Master Rudy Tan Cardoso and aspiring masters like Precioso Saguisag and his brother, future senator Rene Saguisag, would play at Lita's house in Caniogan, Pasig.

"They would arrive Saturdays or Sundays. We had no chess clock. We just played," she said. These sessions boosted her, and sharpened the tactical ability which even men dreaded.

The 1957 championship was also won by Alvarez after her foe Lily Macanas did not show up for the tiebreak. After that, the women's championships were not held until 1976, when the Philippine Chess Federation decided to send women for the first time to the Olympiad.

But Alvarez, despite finishing law and passing the bar, found the time to play. In the 1960 intercollegiate she ended up tied for third after sensationally beating Juan Reyes.

"I was in form. I saw many things over-the-board," she recalled. After nearly 20 years, they met in an executives tournament and Reyes won. "He told me he was affected by his loss to me and when he beat me, a burden was lifted," said Alvarez.

When the nationals returned in 1976, Cartel won. But in the Haifa Olympiad, carrying the team was left to Alvarez, who scored 5.5 out of 9 rounds and the teener Lizares, who scored 5.5 out of 10. "I put everything into every game. Sometimes I rarely got up from my chair." she said.

The Filipinas finished 16th overall as they landed in Group B. But only after 1994 did chess officials send teams to every Olympiad.

Despite the big demands of chess on women, Alvarez and other veterans persevered. "Women chess players come go. Family and work are priorities," she said.

Cristine Rose Mariano, who won the 1987 national championship at the age of 14, said:  "This is why she (Alvarez) remains an idol. She achieved so much and not only in chess."

Alvarez continued to play but failed to make the Olympiad team. But at the age 55, she won the national championship and qualified for the Asian Zonal.

Now, years away from the game, she is content spending time with her son and daughter, who has a high post at a foreign bank and her grandchildren. These occupy her at weekends. More than 60 years ago, all her weekends were spent playing chess at her home. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Irish wrestler Becky Lynch etched her name in the history books after winning it all in the first-ever women's main event at WrestleMania 35 on Sunday, April 7 (Monday, April 8, Manila time).

The WWE superstar known as "The Man" bested both Charlotte Flair and UFC Hall of Famer Ronda Rousey to take both the Raw and SmackDown women's titles at the promotion's biggest annual event.

Rousey looked to be in control late into the match after Flair was tossed through a table set up in the ring, but Lynch countered her "Piper's Pit" finisher to a pinfall that secured the stunning victory.

Including the women's titles, a total of 8 championships changed hands in the 16-match card, highlighted by Kofi Kingston's first-ever WWE Championship victory after defeating four-time titlist Daniel Bryan.

Seth Rollins also ended Brock Lesnar's 156-day reign as WWE Universal Champion in an unprecedented opening match. Before his second reign, Lesnar once held Raw's main title for 503 days, the longest in WWE history.

In other non-title matches, Triple H defeated Filipino-American wrestler and movie star Batista in a brutal No Holds Barred match. Had Triple H lost, he would have been forced to retire from in-ring competition.

While the veteran Triple H saved his legendary career, the same could not be said for 1996 Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle, who lost his farewell match against former United States champion Baron Corbin.

In the pre-show card, Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder defeated the team of Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder to capture the Raw Tag Team Titles.

The upset win marked the end of Hawkins' personal 269-match losing streak spanning nearly 3 years.

WWE announced that WrestleMania 35 sold out, drawing in a staggering 82,265 fans at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The event also grossed $16.9 million in revenue, the second highest gross in WWE history behind WrestleMania 32 in 2016. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Jaja Santiago conspired with import Courtney Felinski as the Foton Tornadoes stunned the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers in the 2019 Philippine SuperLiga Grand Prix quarterfinals on Saturday, April 6.

Santiago and Felinski fired 20 points each to propel the No. 7 Foton over the No. 2 F2 Logistics to a thrilling 27-25, 19-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-12 victory at the Arena in San Juan.

The twice-to-beat Cargo Movers were heavily favored heading into the match, but the Tornadoes showed determination to force a do-or-die quarterfinals match on Thursday, April 11, at the same venue.

Import Milagros Collar chalked up 16 points – all built on attacks – while locals Maika Ortiz and Carmina Aganon chipped in 11 and 9 points, respectively, in the win.

F2 Logistics drew prolific performances from reinforcements MJ Perez and Lindsay Stalzer, who delivered 26 and 24 points, respectively, but to no avail.

Ara Galang had 15 points in the losing effort.

In the other quarterfinals match, the Petron Blaze Spikers extended their winning streak to 15 games as they made quick work of the Sta Lucia Lady Realtors, 25-17, 25-11, 25-19, to book their semifinals ticket. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Magnolia forced a deciding Game 3 in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals after a 106-77 demolition of Barangay Ginebra at the Araneta Coliseum on Monday, April 8.

The 29-point drubbing marked Magnolia's biggest Clasico win over Ginebra, breaking a record 27-point victory in the 2008 Philippine Cup.

Six Hotshots breached double digit scoring, led by Ian Sangalang's 21 points paired with 9 rebounds. Jio Jalalon had his usual all-around production off 17 markers, 6 assists, and 5 boards, while Paul Lee led the bench mob with 13 points.

"Good thing kasi best-of-three. Sabi ko last time, maganda na 'yung mga players ko, na-challenge sila," Magnolia coach Chito Victolero said.

(It's a good thing that it's best-of-three. I said last time, it's good that my players were challenged.)

"That's what we talked about, our spirit, aura, and passion in Game 1 was not Magnolia Hotshots basketball."

Already on the brink of elimination in the Manila Clasico quarters, Magnolia used a blazing 11-0 start to set the tempo before settling for a 25-18 lead after the opening quarter.

The Hotshots proved their hot start wasn't a one-off after piling 10 more unanswered points late in the 2nd, ending with a Paul Lee and-one for the 49-36 lead.

The game turned to a no-contest by the 3rd frame, as Magnolia clinched a 30-point gap, 78-48, after a Rodney Brondial layup capped a 12-4 run.

Ginebra never got closer than 23 points in the 4th as Magnolia coasted to the series-tying win. Sol Mercado led the team with 13 points in the sorry loss.

The Clasico quarters will culminate on Wednesday, April 10, at the same venue.

The Scores

Magnolia 106 - Sangalang 21, Herndon 18, Jalalon 17, Barroca 13, Lee 13, Dela Rosa 11, Ramos 6, Abundo 3, Reavis 2, Brondial 2, Gamalinda 0, Melton 0, Pascual 0.

Ginebra 77 - Mercado 13, Thompson 8, Ferrer 8, Dela Cruz 7, Caperal 6, Teodoro 6, Slaughter 5, Tenorio 5, Aguilar 5, Chan 4, Cruz 4, Devance 4, Mariano 2.

Jalalon records 4x5 game, sees Game 1 loss as wake-up call

THE CYCLONE. Jio Jalalon stars on both ends to help Magnolia live another day. Photo from PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines – After a forgettable Game 1 performance in the Manila Clasico quarterfinals, Magnolia guard Jio Jalalon wasn't ready to accept a sweeping loss against their Barangay Ginebra rivals.

Instead, the second year guard got his groove back and finished with 17 points, 6 assists, 5 steals, and 5 rebounds – a 4x5 line – in the Hotshots' 106-77 Game 2 beatdown of the Gin Kings on Monday, April 8.

"Nagising na kami lahat, 'yung mga mistakes namin, nag-adjust na kami," the former Arellano star said after the game. "Kaya ayun, nakuha namin itong game na 'to at back to zero na ulit."

(We all became enlightened and adjusted from our mistakes. So there, we got the game and it's now back to zero.)

Magnolia started the game 11-0 and never looked back, stretching its gap by as many as 31 points in the lopsided win.

Jalalon acknowledged that his team had a better flow on both ends, which was proven by 13 Magnolia steals that forced 20 Ginebra turnovers.

"Nag-umpisa sa defense 'yun," he said. "Binalik namin 'yung defense namin, kung paano 'yung Magnolia Hotshots basketball, kaya ayun nakuha namin rhythm namin lahat."

(It all started with our defense. We got back our defense, how Magnolia Hotshots basketball is played, so we all got our rhythm.)

"'Di kami nag-share ng ball, kanya-kanya kami," Jalalon recalled from Game 1. "Ngayon ang ganda ng ikot ng bola namin, 6 to 8 passes bago kami tumitira. Maganda 'yung napag-aralan din talaga namin."

(We didn't share the ball and did things on our own then. Now, we had great passing, 6 to 8 passes before we would take a shot. It's nice that we studied the game.)

But the 2018 Governor's Cup champions acknowledge that the road to the Philippine Cup title is still far from over, a fact that Jalalon knows very well.

"Tumaas na kumpiyansa namin, pero sabi nga namin, 'di pa kami masaya kasi may Game 3 pa."

(Our confidence got better, but like we said, we're not happy because we still have Game 3.) – Rappler.com

MASKED MAN. Troy Rosario knocks down timely buckets in the second half as TNT turns back San Miguel in Game 2. Photo from PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines – The TNT KaTropa live on to fight another day in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals after turning back the San Miguel Beermen, 93-88, at the Araneta Coliseum on Monday, April 8.

RR Pogoy led TNT with 20 points – 17 coming in the first half alone – while Jayson Castro bounced back from a forgettable Game 1 performance with 19 points, including the deciding layup in the clutch, plus 9 assists.

"We're just lucky we just tied the series. Nothing to celebrate [about]," KaTropa head coach Bong Ravena said.

"Our goal is to stay in the series hoping to win tonight. Nothing to celebrate. San Miguel played really, really well, and good thing our outside shots were falling."

After going down by as many as 11 points, the Beermen kept their cool and inched within 2, 78-80, after a split free throw trip by Christian Standhardinger midway through the 4th.

However, San Miguel suffered a big blow two possessions later as reigning five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo suffered an inadvertent head hit and an apparent left knee injury during a rebound battle.

Fajardo eventually returned and bullied his way to an 86-all tie at the 1:43 mark.

However, Troy Rosario halted San Miguel's comeback rally with a corner three-pointer for the 89-86 lead with 66 ticks left. Rosario ended up with 15 points, 13 coming in the second half alone.

Castro followed that up with a crafty layup at the 26-second mark to effectively put the game away for the KaTropa.

Fajardo saw his massive 26-point, 19-rebound double-double go to waste, while Standhardinger chipped in 18 markers off the bench.

Now tied at 1-1, TNT has a shot to oust the reigning four-time Philippine Cup champions in Game 3 on Wednesday, April 10, at the same venue.

The Scores

TNT 93 - Pogoy 20, Castro 19, Rosario 15, Trollano 12, Reyes 9, Washington 5, Semerad, A. 4, Williams 4, Taha 4, Heruela 1, Carey 0.

San Miguel 88 - Fajardo 26, Standhardinger 18, Cabagnot 16, Romeo 12, Ross 6, Lassiter 5, Santos 5, Tubid 0, Ganuelas-Rosser 0, Nabong 0, Pessumal 0.

ROAD TO OLYMPICS. eSports is still vying to be included in the 2024 Paris Olympics. File photo by Tobias Schwarz/AFP

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine eSports is continuing to take things to the world stage.

eSports World Federation (ESWF), a Philippine-based group that aims to be the organizer of the world's biggest international tournaments, launched its plans on Monday, April 8.

"Our true goal is to hold the eWorld cup in the Philippines," said ESWF board member Rains David.

While eSports' bid to be included in the 2024 Paris Olympic games is currently on hold, ESWF still wants to continue the fight to promote amateur eSports across the globe.

The organization also clarified that it doesn't have plans of joining the race to be accredited by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), but it hopes that the future eSports national sports association will consider the products of its grassroots program. (READ: 5 games shortlisted for SEA Games 2019's esport events)

"The goal of ESWF is to develop champions and train athletes for the Philippines. We’ll be more than happy if the POC or the PHISGOC (Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee) will be able to entertain our champions for the SEA Games," added David.

ESWF is collaborating with Philippine Collegiate Champions League and Philippine Superliga help develop its grassroots program that will be set up in schools, universities, local government unites, amusement centers or arcades and city-based tournaments.

There's no final lineup of games yet, but the ESWF is planning to organize gaming tournaments for Mobile Legends, Arena of Valor, Dota 2, StarCraft II and Tekken 7

The federation proposed a national multi-game tournament "Bayan Mo vs Bayan Ko" which aims to become an avenue for scouting future national team members. – Rappler.com

'Pwede sila matalo': TNT looking to carry momentum over San Miguel

ONE WIN AWAY. Jayson Castro admits the TNT KaTropa's confidence has been boosted knowing they can beat the San Miguel Beermen. Photo from PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines – For the TNT KaTropa, beating the San Miguel Beermen in Game 2 of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals meant more than just a win.

For them, the 93-88 win on Monday, April 8, proved that the reigning four-time All-Filipino champions are actually beatable in the playoffs despite having the most star-studded roster in the league.

"Sa totoo lang nagpataas 'to ng kumpiyansa sa'min kasi alam na namin na kaya namin sila talunin, pwede sila matalo," said RR Pogoy after a team-best 20-point performance. "Sana sa Game 3 ganoon pa rin."

(Honestly, this boosted our confidence because we know we can beat them. They're beatable. Hopefully, that'll stay the same for Game 3.)

"Malaking [tulong] kasi 'yun nga, at least alam naming kaya naming manalo sa kanila," echoed veteran point guard Jayson Castro, who bounced back with 19 points and a team-high 9 assists off the bench.

(It's a big help because at least we know we can win against them.)

"Alam naman natin yung San Miguel, napakalakas na team, 'di ba? Kami, 'yun lang 'yung motivation namin, makapasok kami ng semis."

(We all know San Miguel is a very strong team, right? For us, that's our motivation, to enter the semis.)

Although TNT held Marcio Lassiter and Arwind Santos to just 5 points apiece, they still failed to contain reigning five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, who led the Beermen with 26 points and 19 rebounds despite sustaining minor head and knee injuries.

For the KaTropa, that will be their main focus heading to Game 3 on Wednesday, April 10, at the Araneta Coliseum.

"Kung pano i-stop si June Mar," Castro said when asked about their adjustments for Game 3.

"Siguro kung pano sila i-stop. Kasi 'yun 'yung number one focus naman namin ngayon, 'yung defense namin. On offense naman kahit sino sa'min kayang umiskor naman at may confidence naman silang lahat."

(How to stop June Mar and the rest. That's our number one focus right now, our defense. Any one of us can score on offense and we all have confidence.)

"Sobrang hirap talaga. Sobrang hirap. Kasi alam mo naman lahat sila ang gagaling eh. Sobrang hirap talunin, may June Mar ka pa na kailangan i-double," Pogoy shared.

"Pero sabi nga ni coach, as long as mag-stick lang tayo sa game plan, kahit anong mangyari, [okay tayo]."

(It's really difficult because you know they're all good and very hard to beat. Then they have June Mar who demands double teams. But as coach said, as long as we stick to the game plan, we'll be okay no matter what happens.) – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The San Miguel Beermen had a chance to sweep the TNT KaTropa to speed up their five-peat bid in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, but it was not meant to be.

RR Pogoy, Jayson Castro and Troy Rosario all heated up at the right moments, causing TNT to upend San Miguel, 93-88, and force a quarterfinals rubber match on Wednesday, April 10.

San Miguel absorbed a double-whammy in the loss as reigning five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo also suffered minor head and left knee injuries midway through the 4th quarter.

Although the 6-foot-10 gentle giant returned after a few minutes on the bench, the team ultimately failed to capitalize and finish off TNT.

"Medyo, medyo masakit, pero mas masakit na natalo kami," he said after a monster 26-point, 19-rebound outing.

"Pero okay lang, ganun talaga. 'Di naman madaling kalaban 'yung TNT eh. Kailangan naming magpahinga, tignan sa viewing ano 'yung mali namin, mga lapses namin. Sana maganda 'yung adjustments namin."

(It hurts a bit, but losing hurts more. But that's okay, it is what it is. TNT is not an easy opponent. We have to rest, see what we did wrong, find out our lapses. Hopefully, we adjust well.)

Fajardo got hit in the head by an inadvertent elbow by Troy Rosario during a rebound battle, then landed awkwardly on his left knee. He had to sit for a couple of minutes on the court before being helped up to the bench.

There, he also had to patch up his bleeding forehead before eventually returning to finish the game.

Along with head coach Leo Austria, Fajardo admits that he's not at 100%, but he's hoping for the best in Game 3 at the Araneta Coliseum.

"He's feeling some pain on his knee, and then lot of banging in his body," Austria said. "Hindi lang naman 'yung paa niya, pati 'yung katawan niya  (It's not only his foot, but his body as well)."

"'Di ko alam eh, puwede siguro (I don't know, I think I can)," Fajardo said when asked about his Game 3 playing status.

Whatever the case may be, Fajardo is just looking for another war come Wednesday night.

"Ine-expect namin na 'di madali 'yung Game 3," he said. "Sana maipanalo namin at makapag-adjust kami nang maayos. Pahinga rin nang maayos. Kailangan naming ipanalo 'yung Game 3 kasi ayaw pa namin magbakasyon."

(We're expecting that Game 3 wouldn't also be easy. Hopefully, we win and adjust well. We also hope to rest well. We need to win Game 3 because we still don't want to go on vacation.) – Rappler.com

PARIS, France – Neymar has paid a visit to Brazilian football legend Pele, who has been in hospital in Paris since April 3.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward posted a photo on his Instagram account on Monday of himself alongside a smiling Pele in his hospital bed with the two holding hands.

The 78-year-old has been released from hospital in Paris and will return to Brazil in the "coming hours," Brazilian media reported Monday, citing his spokesman.

The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to a hospital with a urinary tract infection last Wednesday, April 3, the day after appearing at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.

Brazilian news website G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to Brazil but had been delayed by further tests and would stay under observation until he was 100%.

"I want to thank you deeply for your positive thoughts and get-well wishes," Pele said in a statement cited by Brazilian news website Globo Sport.

"Thanks to the great affection of the medical team at the American hospital of Paris, I am travelling home soon."

The infection was not serious and was under control, according to members of Pele's entourage.

"Thank you so much for all the love! The antibiotics are working," Pele tweeted on Friday. "I'm feeling much better and I think I'm ready to play again!"

Pele has had several health issues in recent years.

A similar infection put him in intensive care in November 2014.

In 2016, Pele, who played 1,363 professional matches, scoring 1,281 goals, was unable to light the flame at the Rio Olympics because of severe pain in the hip.

"I was not physically fit to participate in the opening of the Games," he said at the time.

In January 2018, he cancelled a trip to London fearing a "stressful" and "tiring" journey.

Stage set for Pogba to prove his worth to Man Utd

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom – Ahead of Barcelona's Champions League trip to Old Trafford, the Catalans' president has admitted even they could not compete with Manchester United's then world record offer to bring Paul Pogba back to England in 2016.

"We couldn't afford that amount of money at the time," Josep Maria Bartomeu told ESPN.

"So he went to United, and he's making them better as a team because he's one of the stars of the world of football right now."

However, nearly 3 years on, United can feel they have still to receive sufficient bang for the bucks they paid to Juventus for Pogba in an £89 million ($116 million) transfer fee.

The French World Cup winner will start for just the second time in a Champions League knockout game for United on Wednesday, April 3.

Benched for both legs of a bitterly disappointing last 16 exit to Sevilla last season by Jose Mourinho due to personal differences and poor performances, Pogba's only previous start ended in a red card and a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain back in February.

Without their suspended star, a youthful United side pulled off a miraculous 3-1 win in Paris to make it to the last eight for the first time in 5 years and give Pogba another chance to shine on the Champions League stage.

The arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to replace the sacked Mourinho in December removed any excuses that it was the Portuguese's straitjacket that was limiting the output of one his most talented players.

An upturn in form was immediate. Pogba scored 9 goals and created 6 more in his first 12 games under Solskjaer.

However, his form has cooled since, and not by coincidence so has United's with 3 defeats in their last 4 games.

Madrid interest?

Pogba has also not done his approval ratings among the United fans any favors by publicly flirting with Real Madrid while away on international duty last month and talking of his admiration for Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

"He's capable of doing everything. There are midfielders who know how to defend really well, others who are very good in attack. He knows how to do everything," said Zidane.

There can little better audition for a Madrid target than ending Barca's bid for a third treble in a decade.

However, United are entitled to want Pogba to show the potential Zidane spoke of on a more regular basis.

For a club steeped in a history of inspirational midfielders such as Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes who demanded the highest standards of themselves and those around them, Pogba is too often hit or miss.

Indeed, there have even been suggestions that United would be wise to cash in if a bid north of £100 million from Madrid materialises this summer, and use the money for the big rebuilding job needed at Old Trafford.

When United and Barca met in the Champions League final in 2009, it was the Red Devils who were pre-match favourites.

Instead, Lionel Messi was on target as Pep Guardiola's side emerged victorious in Rome, and he struck again when the sides met again in the final two years later.

Messi is still Barca's inspiration and with him they have made the last 8 every season since. By contrast, this is just United's second quarter-final in the last eight years.

The signing of Pogba was meant to signal United's return to the elite.

It is time for him to deliver on the biggest stage. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Beer's June Mar Fajardo, already the record holder as the player with the most Best Player of the Conference (BPC) trophies won, is in the running for the coveted individual award yet again.

Fajardo has a crack at a sixth straight BPC award in the PBA Philippine Cup as he leads the current BPC race, comfortably ahead of everybody with an average of 42.2 statistical points per game.

But at least 3 players in Calvin Abueva, RR Pogoy and Matthew Wright are major contenders, especially the two Phoenix Pulse players since their team has safely made it to the semifinals.

Fajardo may be leading the stats race but the Beermen are still to fight the TNT KaTropa in a quarterfinals rubber match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, April 10.  (READ: Fajardo brushes off injury scare: 'Mas masakit na natalo kami')

The Cebuano gentle giant is in pole position in the stats race on the strength of his league-leading norms of 22.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per outing.

NorthPort teammates Sean Anthony (37.1) and Stanley Pringle (36.0) are Fajardo’s closest pursuers, followed by Abueva (34.9), Pogoy (34.7) and Wright (34.3).

Moala Tautuaa (33.3), Ian Sangalang (33.0), Japeth Aguilar (31.9) and Jayson Castro (31.0) round out the Magic 10.

But only the top 5 in the stats race after the semifinals will be declared the official candidates for the award.

Columbian Dyip’s Jaymar Perez, NorthPort’s Robert Bolick and Rain or Shine’s Javee Mocon are in an interesting race for the Rookie of the Year award to be given away at the end of the season.

Perez leads the stats derby with 28.7 but Bolick and Mocon are close behind with identical SP averages of 23.6 through the all-Filipino elims.

Blackwater’s Abu Tratter (20.5) is at fourth, followed by Columbian’s JP Calvo (16.6) and Jeepy Faundo (14.2).  – Rappler.com

FINALLY. Ray Parks can now focus on the PBA. File photo by Michael Gatpandan/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – After a long wait, Bobby Ray Parks Jr is finally a PBA player.

The 26-year-old former ABL champion announced on Twitter that he has “signed,” confirming reports that Parks has inked a two-conference deal with the Blackwater Elite.

Parks was drafted second overall in the 2018 PBA Draft, but had to skip the ongoing 2019 Philippine Cup due to his obligations with the ABL’s San Miguel Alab Pilipinas. However, their title defense run ended unceremoniously after getting swept in the quarterfinals by Hong Kong Eastern.

Blackwater management then gave the son of Hall of Famer Bobby Parks ample time to rest following a grueling season with home-and-away format, prompting numerous negative comments on social media.

Parks Jr had this to say in response.

With the contract now officially signed, Parks is expected to be a big boost for the Elite in the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup after a bottom-dwelling finish to the Philippine Cup. – Rappler.com

SBP continues Clarkson talks for FIBA World Cup

MANILA, Philippines – Talks of getting Filipino-American NBA player Jordan Clarkson to suit up for the Philippines as a local in the 2019 FIBA World Cup are still in the works.

According to PBA chairman Ricky Vargas, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan and president Al Panlilio are continuing talks with FIBA about the matter. (READ: Gilas to 'do everything' to have Clarkson for FIBA World Cup)

"SBP is quietly working with FIBA, so we're seeing to it that if we can get Jordan for the World Cup [as a local player], that will be fantastic," Vargas said.

While the national basketball federation is waiting for FIBA's decision, Vargas bared that the PBA's commitment extends to sending out two different teams for the World Cup and the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. (SEA GAMES 2019: SBP aims to sweep all basketball events)

"The PBA committed to SBP to support the national team on both ends – on the Gilas road to the World and the Southeast Asian Games – so we talked about having two teams," Vargas said.

Even if the Philippines is aiming to send a formidable all-PBA team to the SEA Games, Vargas doesn't see the need for international-based players like Andray Blatchesuit to suit up for the regional biennial meet.

"Blatche in the SEA Games? That's overkill and that's only one medal," Vargas added.

The Philippine Olympic Committee president also expects that the 3x3 men's team will be composed of PBA players. Meanwhile, the Philippine women's basketball team is working with San Miguel to improve its chances of clinching a podium finish. – Rappler.com
