MANILA, Philippines – When University of the Philippines (UP) standout Isa Molde went down with an ankle injury against Ateneo last week, Lady Maroons head coach Godfrey Okumu said he expects Marian Buitre to “do wonders for the team.”

The Lady Maroon did exactly what her coach predicted as she topscored for UP against the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday, April 3.

As a senior, lagi naman akong nandiyan if they need me. ‘Di naman ako nawawala eh,” said Buitre, who recorded 19 points built on 16 spikes and 3 blocks in the Lady Maroons’ cardiac win over the Lady Warriors, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-11.

(As a senior, I’m always there when they need me.)

“Kahit sinong kalaro namin, lagi sinasabi ng coaches namin, ‘every game, we treat it as a championship game.’ So yun yung mindset ko coming to every game, and not just this game.”

(Our coaches told us to treat every game as a championship game. That’s my mindset in every game, and not just this game.)

Buitre also had 17 excellent digs to help UP improve to a share of 3rd with University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University at 6-4.

Molde, who watched from the sidelines, shared that she was confident that her team would pull off the win behind Buitre.

Knowing Marian eh, every time na pinapapasok siya, ibibigay lahat-lahat niya para sa team eh. Sobrang saya rin na ganyan yung attitude niya.

(Whenever she plays, she always gives it her all for the team. I’m really happy with her attitude.)

Molde said her ankle injury was only a grade one sprain and she would try to play in their next game against last season’s runner-up FEU.

But with or without Molde, Buitre and the Diliman-based squad intend to go all-out anew against the Lady Tamaraws to solidly their Final Four bid on Saturday, April 6, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. – Juro Morilla/Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Robert Bolick knocked in a clutch triple with 52 ticks left to play as the NorthPort Batang Pier survived Barangay Ginebra, 100-97, to secure a playoff berth at the end their 2019 PBA Philippine Cup regular season campaign on Wednesday, April 3, at the Araneta Coliseum.

With the win, the Batang Pier successfully secured the 7th seed in the playoffs and arranged a quarterfinals match against No. 2 Rain or Shine, leaving NLEX and Alaska to duke it out in a knockout match for the final postseason berth.

Ginebra still marches on to the next round despite the loss as the 3rd seed in a Manila Clasico showdown versus 6th seed Magnolia.

As he has shown time and again in his collegiate career, hotshot rookie Bolick came up clutch, scoring a game-high 24 points on a 4-of-8 shooting from downtown with 5 assists.

Sean Anthony was a beast on both ends as well, tallying 19 markers, 6 rebounds and 6 steals off the bench.

Although NorthPort held a six-point lead midway through the 4th quarter, Ginebra pumped out an 11-3 comeback, ending with a go-ahead jumper by Jervy Cruz, 94-92, with 3:17 left in regulation.

Cruz later gave Ginebra another lead off the 95-all deadlock, but Bolick responded with a huge go-ahead triple, 98-97, with 52 ticks left to play.

The Gin Kings had their chances down the stretch, but ultimately failed to deliver as Pringle sank the game-sealing free throws in the game’s dying seconds.

Sol Mercado tallied a 10-point, 11-assist double-double in the loss. Scottie Thompson scored 9 and grabbed a game-high 11 boards while Greg Slaughter had a team-high 14 points.

PBA Ironman LA Tenorio broke new ground with his 600th straight game, but only had 3 points and 4 assists in 20 minutes of action.

MANILA, Philippines – Hong Kong Eastern emphatically booted Alab Pilipinas out of contention with a 102-84 blowout in Game 2 of their ABL Season 9 quarterfinals series in Hong Kong on Wednesday, April 3.

A new champion is now guaranteed as Alab fizzled out with a six-game losing streak in a failed bid to defend its crown.

Marcus Elliot led Hong Kong’s upset efforts with 29 points, followed by O’Darien Bassett’s 28-marker, 15-assist double-double masterpiece.

From a 25-all deadlock early in the 2nd quarter, the seventh-seeded Hong Kong cruised away with a massive 24-5 run, ending with a Ki Lee three, 49-30, at the 2:26 mark. He ended up with 18 points on a 6-of-8 shooting with a perfect 3-of-3 clip from beyond the arc.

The Filipino side never recovered since then, dipping as low as 25, 51-76, after a Bassett triple at the 2:30 mark of the 3rd. Alab tried to make some runs in the 4th, but never got closer than 17 points against a motivated Hong Kong squad.

Alab’s Big Three went down swinging in the loss, led by PJ Ramos’ 21-point, 13-rebound double-double.

Local MVP Ray Parks chipped in 19 markers while Defensive Player of the Year Renaldo Balkman tallied 16 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists.

MANILA, Philippines – Bienvienido Marañon scored his fifth 2019 AFC Cup goal to power Ceres-Negros FC to its third consecutive victory in a 1-0 decision over Persija Jakarta on Wednesday, April 3, at the Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium in Bacolod City.

The Spanish striker scored the only goal of the match after heading in team captain Martin Steuble’s cross at the 9th minute.

Marañon also sustained his streak of scoring in every tournament match. (READ: Hat-trick hero Marañon powers Ceres over Becamex)

This latest triumph saw Ceres grab solo first place in Group G with a maximum of 9 points and a +4 goal difference. It was also the Philippine club's first clean sheet of the tournament.

Persija, meanwhile, tied Becamex Binh Duong FC with 4 points while Shan United FC remained at the bottom of the group with no point.

The match started with Ceres showcasing wonderful team play inside the first 3 minutes.

Stephan Schröck produced a lovely lob to Mike Ott, who then headed the ball down to Marañon for an easy tap in, but the ball went sideways after he fired the shot.

Five minutes later, Marañon created a chance for Jose Elmer Porteria down the right flank, but his shot inside the box was parried out for a corner kick by Persija goalkeeper  Andritany Ardhiyasa.

The Indonesian-based squad had a chance at goal a minute later as Riko Simanjuntak released Bruno Oliveira De Matos with a threading through-ball, but unfortunately, the latter was flagged offside by the assistant referee. The play happened seconds before Marañon put Ceres on top, 1-0.

At the 18th minute, Ceres goalkeeper Roland Müller was called into action as he denied Ismed Sofyan’s goal-bound free kick outside the penalty box.

Bambang Pamungkas almost scored the equalizer for Persija at the 41st minute after Rizki Ramdani played in a perfect cross, but the former’s shot from close range went off-target.

The second half began with Ceres producing two early chances to double its lead, with the first coming from an OJ Porteria shot at the 49th minute but it was calmly saved by Ardhiyasa.

Another opportunity happened a minute later when Marañon found a running Kevin Ingreso down the left flank, but the latter’s left-footed attempt rattled the left post of Persija.

At the 63rd and 65th minute, it was the Indonesians’ turn to test the Ceres defense. Rohit Chand saw his header go straight at Müller, while Pamungkas’ header from a corner went over the bar.

Schröck then launched an audacious shot from way outside the penalty box at the 71st minute, but it was calmly parried away by the Ardhiyasa.

Porteria, Schröck and Ott would have 3 more chances in the last 18 minutes of the match, but the Persija defense held on to keep the score at 1-0.

TIMELINE: From Boracay to Belo, Floyd Mayweather gets hooked

INDULGENCE. Floyd Mayweather shows that he's boss in his latest visit to the Philippines. Photo from Floyd Mayweather's Instagram

MANILA, Philippines – Looks like Floyd Mayweather Jr is the happiest retired boxer alive.

In his travels all over the world, the undefeated American boxer suddenly landed in the Philippines to frolic in the shores of Boracay and just to get a skin treatment from Dr. Victoria "Vicki" Belo in Manila.

But as he was indulging in the country's world-class experiences, it didn't seem like a happy ending for others – especially the Philippine media.

Let's look back what made Mayweather's visit memorable this summer:

Saturday, March 30 – Floyd announces Philippines visit

In an Instagram post by @wendellvans, Mayweather announced to the world that he will be visiting the Philippines, but he did not reveal where he was going exactly.

"I’ll be over in the Philippines tomorrow. Philippines, we’re going to have fun, we’re going to enjoy ourselves," said the retired American boxer.

"Philippines, I love you. I’m on my way."

Before making his way to the Pearl of the Orient, Mayweather traveled to Maldives and Dubai.

Sunday, March 31 – Floyd arrives

Mayweather touched down on Philippine soil in his private jet Air Mayweather early in the morning.

A few hours later, an Air Mayweather jet could be seen landing in Caticlan airport as "Money" Mayweather no doubt was going to get some rest and relaxation in the reopened Boracay. (READ: East Asians dominate Boracay's foreign visitors

At the peak of a hot summer day, Mayweather immediately got off to explore Boracay's white sand beaches while having some cocktails with models including Nico Bolzico's niece Josefina Bolzico at a five-star hotel. (LOOK: Floyd Mayweather jets off to Boracay)

Monday, April 1 – Floyd defies aging athleticism

As beach parties and water sports are no longer a thing in Boracay, Mayweather needed to find other ways to stay in shape while on vacation.

Mayweather definitely showed that he still has the energy of a 20-year-old even at 42 as he played a game of beach volleybal with his TMT pilots.

Mayweather also rekindled his love for basketball by practicing his shooting at the D*Mall Boracay arcade.

But instead of travelling in the comforts of a private van, the retired boxer and his team were escorted by the Boracay police and SWAT team from D*Mall back to Station 3.

That was around 10km according to @wendellvans' Instagram.

Tuesday, April 2, 1:30 pm – Floyd's flight gets delayed

Mayweather made an unexpected sidetrip to Manila to get a skin treatment from celebrity dermatologist Dr. Vicki Belo.

Members of the press were informed Monday that the Belo Medical Group would be holding a press conference with Mayweather at 1:30 pm, but his flight from Boracay was delayed.

Before making his way to Belo's Makati clinic, Mayweather checked in first at Resorts World Manila and strolled through some stores in the mall.

Tuesday, April 3, 3 pm – Floyd gets 'Belofied'

Mayweather arrived in the Belo clinic dressed in a colorful tuxedo, and directly told Dr. Belo in a consultation that he doesn't have plans of looking younger, but he wanted to look "fresh." (READ: Pretty Boy Floyd: Mayweather gets 'Belofied')

"Pretty Boy" Floyd then became the first to try Belo's newest Thermage FLX machine that was made to tighten his skin in 30 minutes.

In the clinic, Scarlet Snow also had some fun throwing some punches on Mayweather's face which many boxers couldn't even do at the ring!

However, a press conference held by Resorts World Manila was also scheduled at 3 pm.

Ooops. Looks like Mayweather knows what Filipino time is, too.

Tuesday, April 2, 4 pm – Floyd starts his run

Mayweather and his team walked to New World Makati where the press conference and photoshoot with the beauty clinic was to be held.

It was obvious that the boxer was in a hurry when the presser only lasted for 6 minutes and no questions from the media were entertained.

Mayweather immediately proceeded to his photo shoot while reporters and broadcast crews patiently waited for him outside.

However, when he was making his way out, he refused to stop and engage in any interview with the press as his bouncers escorted him out of the hotel.

Tuesday, April 2, 6 pm – Floyd decides to go shopping

Three hours have gone by since his scheduled press conference at Resorts World Manila, and Philippine media continued the wait.

However, netizens have caught the "Money" taking his time shopping in Louis Vuitton and Nike, and even indulged on some trendy cookies before leaving the mall. (LOOK: Floyd Mayweather shops til he drops in Makati)

Was he finally off to attend his own press conference in Pasay City?

Tuesday, April 2, 8 pm – "May-WAIT-er"

Apparently, he was not on his way back to Resorts World.

At 8:30 pm, Rappler asked event host Gretchen Ho where he was, she replied that he was along Skyway which has a direct exit to the venue through the NAIA expressway.

There were also rumors that Manny Pacquiao could be a surprise guest in the press conference as a makeshift court was set up in the hall. Belo also revealed that Mayweather and Pacquiao were going to face off in game of basketball.

Tuesday, April 2, 10 pm – Mayweather goes hungry

Having a busy day can get you hungry, so the boxing champ decided to make a detour to try the country's famous chicken Inasal.

Umagang Kay Ganda host Ho confirmed that he is still not on his way to the press conference and even worried about the possibility of it conflicting with her morning show.

Although the members of the press were served food and drinks by the hotel throughout the wait, many were already speculating that the event was going nowhere based on the developments.

Tuesday, April 2, 11:30 pm – Mayweather a no-show

After more than 8 hours of waiting, Joee Guilas, RWM director for corporate communication spilled the bad news that Mayweather decided not to show up for the press conference.

Frustrated reporters and event hosts left while a hotel insider said Mayweather was actually in his suite, but chose not to go down.

However, all the listed guests were given local concert tickets from the hotel.

Ho, though, looked at the bright side and joked: "Now, I can tell my grandkids, I was once stood up by Floyd."

Wednesday, April 3 – Mayweather finally gets to party

Who says parties aren't for oldies?

After a quiet morning, Mayweather at least showed up in private party at Corinthian Gardens where he managed to answer questions from the media.

Even after clamors for a rematch since his encounter with Pacquiao in 2018, Mayweather broke the news that the money-spinner is not on his mind right now.

He added that his retirement is geared to supporting his family as his oldest son and daughter are working on their music careers while his youngest son is also finishing his college degree. – Rappler.com

LOS ANGELES, USA – Mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor hinted he may not be retiring after all on Wednesday, April 3 (Thursday, April 4, Manila time) after a racially-charged exchange of insults with rival Khabib Nurmagomedov.

In a cryptic post on Twitter which came a week after he had vowed to hang up his gloves, the trash-talking Irishman indicated he was not done with fighting.

"I want to move forward, with my fans of all faiths and all backgrounds," McGregor wrote. "All faiths challenge us to be our best selves. It is one world and one for all. Now see you in the Octagon."

McGregor's tweet appeared to be a response to criticism directed towards him after an earlier post in which he insulted Nurmagomedov's wife and the couple's Muslim faith. McGregor swiftly deleted the post made late Tuesday.

Nurmagomedov however reacted furiously to the insult, raising reported sexual assault allegations which McGregor faces in Ireland according to the New York Times. (READ: Conor McGregor under investigation for sex assault)

"You are a hypocrite who is not responsible for your actions," Nurmagomedov wrote. "Justice will find you. We will see."

The vitriolic exchange prompted an intervention from UFC chief Dana White, who urged both camps to dial back their rhetoric.

"I am aware of the recent social media exchange between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor," White said in a statement.

"The ongoing situation has escalated to a level that is unacceptable. As such, we are taking the necessary steps to reach out to both athlete camps and this situation is being addressed by all parties internally."

Nurmagomedov defeated McGregor in a bout  last October in Las Vegas in a contest that was marred by a massive brawl at ringside.

In January, the Nevada State Athletic Commission handed McGregor a six-month suspension for his role in the post-fight melee, backdated to October.– Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – With Ateneo set to make the Final Four for the 10th straight season, Kat Tolentino has nothing else on her mind but the highly coveted UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball title.

From the get-go, the Lady Eagles have leaned on Tolentino's scoring prowess, making her one of the candidates for an MVP title.

But of course, the 24-year-old spiker has put the team's success as priority.

"I'm more focused on our team goal which is the championship. As long as we get that, any other award is not really a concern or important for me," said Tolentino, who currently tallies 153 points off 120 spikes, 23 blocks and 2 aces.

Tolentino also reinforces league top blocker Maddie Madayag, helping transform Ateneo into this season's best blocking team.

Volleyball phenom Alyssa Valdez was the last Lady Eagle to hold an MVP title, while former Ateneo men's coach and current women's team mentor Oliver Almadro had five-time men's MVP Marck Espejo in his fold.

As Tolentino remains in the running to join their ranks, she's grateful that it all started with the trust that Almadro and her team have given her.

"I think that it's a blessing that coach has trusted me with this role. Every player's role is just as important as mine. Either way, I'll do whatever it takes to keep moving forward," added Tolentino.

This year, the Fil-Canadian will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in BS Management, but has one more year of eligibility with the team.

Tolentino, though, has decided not to think too far ahead.

"I haven't been able to think about it (fifth year) because, I think, it's more important to think about this season then I can think about that."– Rappler.com

REPRESENT. Fil-Australian Xantheia Pennisi returns to the Philippines for the 2019 Red Bull Cliff Diving world series. Photo release

MANILA, Philippines –  Filipino-Australian Xantheia Pennisi will compete in the Red Bull Cliff Diving world series on Friday, Apirl 12, in Miniloc Island, El Nido, Palawan to become the tour's first partcipant of Filipino descent.

Pennisi – whose mother is from Tarlac – returned to the Philippines after 7 years, but will be representing Australia as she goes against 24 professionals from 18 countries.  (READ: Olympian to officiate PH leg of Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2019

She hopes that she can be a source of inspiration to the country's homegrown diving talents to pursue the high-diving discipline.

"I [am] representing Australia, now that it’s here in the Philippines, my whole family will be watching me, so [it's like] I will be representing Philippines and Australia, but I hope that it will inspire the other divers," said the 20-year-old during the press conference on Thursday, April 4, at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

The Brisbane native also joined the young Philippine diving team in a training session to demonstrate cliff diving techiniques that differ from the Olympic standard.

Before she dared to take the 20-meter height in 2017, Pennisi was a gymnast and traditional diver.

Together with three-time champion Rhiannan Iffland of Australia, the newcomer started diving from the heights of 10m to 15m and 17m and finally mustered up the courage to leap from the 20-m cliff in June 2018.

According to the chairman of the Philippine National Diving Team, Marie Dimanche, the national sports association (NSA) is interested in looking at Pennisi's background and qualificiations in diving that may gain her a spot in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games team.

"We have to review her dive list because cliff diving is a different [discipline] from the FINA [standard]," said Dimanche.

"As long as she has a Filipino passport, and our coaches see that she qualifies, then she can join the team."

Also present in the tour are nine-time men's champion Orlando Duque from Colombia, who will be competing in his last season and Iffland, who looks to nab her fourth title this season.

The tour's youngest permanent diver Eleanor Smart of USA joins the bid for a top 3 finish in the world championships and the world series. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Cignal-Ateneo kept its foot on the gas in the 2019 PBA D-League, drubbing Petron-Letran, 83-64, at the Ynares Sports Arena on Thursday, April 4.

BJ Andrade led the way with 13 points for Ateneo, who missed the services of two-time UAAP Finals MVP Thirdy Ravena and 3 other Blue Eagles.

Ravena’s absence was hardly felt, however, as Andrade erupted for 10 of his 13 markers in the 3rd frame that broke the game wide open for the reigning UAAP champions.

Ateneo then cruised to the finish line, netting a 20-point lead in the 4th, 82-62, off a late free throw by Ange Kouame.

Kouame ended up with an easy 10-point, 11-rebound double-double in 17 minutes on the floor while Mike Nieto chipped in 12 markers.

"Our discipline wasn't good in the first half and that's not the right recipe to play successful basketball," said Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin as his side improved to solo 3rd place at 4-1 in the Aspirants Group.

"But we sorted some things out, BJ, Mike, and Matt hit some shots out and that got us in the right track. We did what we have to do."

Jerrick Balanza paced Letran with 16 points, but needed 18 shots to get there.

Reliable reinforcement Alvin Pasaol added 15 markers and 8 boards while lanky forward Jeo Ambohot had 10 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

Young guns

Not to be outdone, NCAA champions Metropac-San Beda also flashed fine form in their 67-55 win over Diliman College-Gerry’s Grill.

Clint Doliguez erupted for 21 points off the bench on a 5-of-6 clip from downtown while James Canlas paced the starting unit with 15 markers, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Despite the exit of team superstars Robert Bolick and Javee Mocon, San Beda’s rebuild is still going strong under multi-time champion coach Boyet Fernandez.

"Ngayon, medyo naglalaro kami as a team," he said. "Ang sinasabi ko lang sa kanila, wala na tayong nung dalawang leader natin, wag na nating asahan sila. Kailangan silang mag-step up."

(We are now slowly playing as a team. I always tell them, we don’t have our two leaders anymore so we musn’t rely on them. They have to step up.)

The young guns indeed stepped up as Canlas and incoming sophomore guard Evan Nelle halted Diliman’s late fourth-quarter rally with consecutive clutch baskets.

Nelle finished with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in the win.

Beninise center Kevin Gandjeto paced Diliman with 13 points and 8 boards.

And in the first game of the day, Go for Gold-CSB manhandled Batangas-EAC, 102-87.

Justin Gutang delivered an all-around performance, finishing with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

Fil-Am guard Roosevelt Adams chipped in an 18-point, 11-board double-double in his return from injury while captain Yankie Haruna added 13 markers in the win.

MANILA, Philippines – Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio has named Sandy Arespacochaga as the new head coach of Batang Gilas that will see action in the FIBA World Cup under-19 tournament this June as well as the FIBA Asia Championships under-16 slated this year.

Arespacochaga isn’t new to handling a team as chief bench tactician since he coached the Ateneo Blue Eaglets that won the UAAP juniors championship in 1999 and 2000.

Over the years, Areapacochaga has developed a reputation as one of the best motivators and teachers among young players. A soft spoken and mild mannered person, his style of coaching is expected to provide great impact on the Batang Gilas players as the under-19 team, bannered by towering teen Kai Sotto, is set to compete in the World Cup 2019 in Heraklion, Greece.

“Sandy has proven his worth as a youth basketball coach. He has won championships in the high-school level and has been an active member of the highly successful Ateneo college basketball program,” Panlilio said of Arespacochaga, who replaced Josh Reyes.

“Batang Gilas U-19 has performed well. It is important that we give them a great fighting chance to win games and get the valuable experience necessary to be competitive in that age group consistently.”

“Sandy’s demeanor is perfect for our young players. He is a natural teacher whose method of teaching is what our young players will embrace and appreciate. He uses his strong communication skills and low key personality to get the best out of his personnel,” he added.

Areapacochaga joined Ateneo’s men’s team as part of the coaching staff of coach Joel Banal in 2002 that won the UAAP title, and with coach Norman Black that bagged 5 straight UAAP crowns from 2008 to 2012, and the school’s back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018 under coach Tab Baldwin.

Areapacochaga also worked with different PBA teams as part of the coaching staff of Black at TNT, coach Yeng Guiao at NLEX, and currently, with coach Bong Ravena of TNT.

“It is important that we teach our young players to not only play good basketball but more importantly, conduct themselves positively inside and outside the basketball court," said Panlilio.

"With his focus on a  strong and wholistic values enrichment program, we in the SBP are confident that the success of the Batang Gilas program will be sustained and will eventually benefit even our Gilas men’s program.” – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Two reinforced Philippine clubs shoot for a 3x3 basketball title and international tournament berths when the  Chooks-to-Go 3x3 Asia Pacific Super Quest gets going from April 6 to 7 at the SM Megamall Fashion Hall.

The Pasig Grindhouse Kings headline Pool C with the quartet of Joshua Munzon, Taylor Statham, Troy Rike, and Serbian import Nikola Pavlovic, while 1Bataan Risers mix it up in Pool B with mainstays Alvin Pasaol and Santi Santillan together with guest player Karl Dehesa and American import Travis Franklin.

Led by Munzon, the Kings hope to sustain their winning form in the Level 8 tourney just a week after bagging the crown and the P1 million prize in the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 President's Cup.

"I think we are as ready as we can be. We have been preparing for the last 3 months for this," said Statham. "Me, Troy, and Josh have played together and we have some great players who have been helping us out. We know that we can compete with the world's best."

The Kings take on Indonesia's Jakarta West Bandits at 11:40 am and Taipei's Absolute 3x3 Basketball at 3 pm on Saturday.

1Bataan Risers, the President's Cup runners-up, battle the American-laden Anytours M1 of Hong Kong at 12:40 pm and world No. 19 Tokyo Dime of Japan in Pool B.

"Ito na yung bunga ng pinaghirapan namin kaya expect niyo na lalaban kami," said Pasaol. "Hindi lang ang sarili namin ang nire-represent namin dito kung hindi ang buong Pilipinas."

(This is the fruit of our hard work so expect us to come out fighting. We’re not just representing ourselves but the whole Philippines.)

Mongolia's Ulaanbataar, Australia's TSV Reading Cinemas, and Korea's Enerskin slug it out in Pool A, while New Zealand's Aotearoa, Vietnam's Saigon Aces, and China's SSLC battle in Pool D.

The top two teams in each pool will advance to the knockout playoffs on Sunday.

For league commissioner Eric Altamirano, who has handled a lot of national 3x3 teams, the two Philippine squads are more than ready to compete against the region's best and finest.

"I've never been to a 3x3 tournament where we have sent teams that are more prepared than these two. Before, we just field last-minute teams,” admitted Altamirano. "We've given them enough time to be ready since they are playing in a real 3x3 league. I'm confident that they can compete with the international teams." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Alaska Aces clinched the 8th and final playoff spot in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup after tripping the NLEX Road Warriors, 88-80, on Friday, April 6, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Sonny Thoss had a scintillating performance of 21 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block in just 24:21 minutes of action to power the Aces in the do-or-die duel.

The Aces, though, take on a tougher assignment as they battle the No. 1 Phoenix Fuel Masters next in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Team captain Jvee Casio came off the bench and injected 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals  as the Aces thwarted the Road Warriors' comeback attempt.

Alaska and NLEX faced off in the winner-take-all after finishing the elimination round with identical 4-7 records.

Kenneth Ighalo paced NLEX with 16 points and 9 rebounds, but only shot 4-of-14 from the field.

It was in the 2nd quarter when the Aces completely separated themselves from the Road Warriors as they tightened up their defense and allowed NLEX to score just 8 points.

Alaska ended the 3nd period with a massive 10-0 run to erect a 19-point advantage, 44-25, before posting its biggest lead of the game, 69-41, after Casio knocked in a three-pointer at the 2:51 mark of the 3rd canto.

NLEX, though, didn't go out without a fight and unleashed an 11-3 run to trim the Aces’ edge to 10, 86-76, but their comeback bid fell short.

The Scores

Alaska 88 – Thoss 21, Enciso 16, Cruz 16, Casio 13, Banchero 4, Baclao 4, Ayaay 4, Racal 3, Exciminiano 3, Teng 2, Potts 2, Pascual 0.

NLEX 80 – Ighalo 16, Galanza 14, Quinahan 13, Erram 10, Paniamogan 8, Magat 7, Rios 5, Baguio 3, Paredes 2, Tiongson 2, Taulava 0, Soyud 0, Tallo 0, Lao 0.

UP, FEU break logjam as UST vies to stay on track

CRUCIAL. UP and FEU go for a key win to prop up their Final Four bids. Photo by Josh Albelda/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – The race for a Final Four spot gets heated on Saturday, April 6.

Tied at 6-4, University of the Philippines (UP), Far Eastern University (FEU) and University of Santo Tomas (UST) vie to stay inside the top 4 behind leader Ateneo (9-1) and defending champion La Salle (7-3) in the UAAP women's volleyball tournament.

UST looks to avoid an upset against a University of the East (UE) team that's fighting to stay alive in the playoff race at 2 pm, while UP and FEU vie to escape the deadlock in the second game at 4 pm at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

UP has FEU's numbers since the preseason, so the Lady Maroons hope to keep it that way in a bid to keep their Final Four chances within reach.

The Lady Tamaraws absorbed a serious straight-set beating from the Ateneo Lady Eagles as they played minus injured rookie and team top scorer Lycha Ebon

Although UP likewise lost stalwart Isa Molde to an ankle injury, the open spiker is set to return with Marian Buitre even riding on a hot momentum.

The Lady Tamaraws, though, remain determined to bounce back from a sorry loss to Ateneo where FEU's scoring sources like Ivana Agudo, Heather Guino-o and Celine Domingo – who wound up scorless after averaging 11.9 points in the season – got shut out.

UST, on the other hand, may have failed in its mission to sweep defending champion La Salle, but a team with a vengeful Eya Laure is a squad that can't be messed with.

Although Laure led her team with 20 points against the Lady Spikers, she rued that UST failed to sustain its opening-set momentum due to her errors.

But an equally motivated UE squad hopes to put up a fight as the Lady Warriors stand on the verge of falling out of Final Four contention.

The Lady Warriors hope to bank on current league best setter Laizah Bendong, who has been opening up more attacking options in Judith Abil, Me-an Mendrez, Zilfa Olarve and middle blocker Seth Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is also now the league's third-best blocker behind the Ateneo duo of Maddie Madayag and Kat Tolentino, while UE's Kath Arado has bounced back to reclaim her post as the tournament best receiver with a 60.87% efficiency while tallying 6.60 digs per set behind FEU's Ria Duremdes (6.93 digs per set). – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Adamson Soaring Falcons pulled off a come-from-behind win over the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tiger Spikers, 20-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-9, to boost their Final Four bid in the UAAP men's volleyball on Saturday, April 6 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Team captain Paolo Pablico scored a game-high 23 points in the win that put the Falcons a step closer in race for a top 4 berth with 7-4 win-loss record.

Adamson got off to a slow start in the first two sets but staged a furious comeback to calm the UST storm

UST captain Manuel Medina led his team with a team-high 17 points.

The Ateneo Blue Eagles also improved their record to 7-4 after carving out a four-set win over the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22.

Ron Medalla erupted for 21 points and drew support from middle blockers Chumason Njigha and Gian Glorioso, who fired 14 points apiece.

MANILA, Philippines – Just in their second appearance in the Hong Kong 7s, the Philippine Volcanoes made history by clinching the country's first quarterfinal berth in the World Series Qualifiers in Hong Kong on Saturday, April 6.

In a do-or-die match, the Philippine men’s rugby team nailed its first win in the tournament against Zimbabwe, 24-12.

"It’s a special day for Philippine rugby. This is the furthest we’ve come on the world stage. The future is bright for rugby in the country," said Philippine rugby general manager Jake Letts.

The winner of the knockout match will advance to the semifinal round of the tournament.

Zimbabwe was first to score within the first two minutes, but the Philippines’ Justin Villazor Coveney tied the game at 5-5 off a turnover ball. Filipino winger Ryan Reyes Howe followed up with another try to put the team up 10-5.

In the second half, Zimbabwe quickly responded to overtake the Philippines 12-10. But the Volcanoes’ Donald Canon Coleman soon scored off a penalty tap to make it 17-12.

ON TRACK. The Golden Tigresses pick up a quick win over UE to stay inside the top 4. File photo by Michael Gatpandan/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses crashed back to the win column and eliminated the University of the East (UE) Lady Warrriors from the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament playoff race.

UST stayed on track for a Final Four berth with a straight-set win, 25-20, 25-20, 25-16, over UE on Saturday, April 6, at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Golden Tigresses broke away from a three-way logjam with University of the Philippines and Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws to clinch solo 3rd spot at 7-4.

The Lady Warriors fell to their ninth loss, which eliminated them from playoff contention.

UST’s rookie star Eya Laure continued to lead the team with 14 points off 12 attacks, 1 block and 1 spike while freshman spiker Ysa Jimenez had a breakout game of 10 points from 6 attacks, 1 block and 3 aces.

UST head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes was happy with how his bench players like Jimenez stepped up for the team.

Maganda pa rin ‘yung naging game kahit papano. Luckily, may panibagong player kami na nagstep-up sa team so that’s the beauty of it na may strong 13-woman lineup kami na any moment puwede magpalit ng tao,” said Reyes.

(The result was still good. Luckily, we had another player that stepped up, so that’s the beauty of having a strong 13-woman lineup because we can substitute anyone in.)

Judith Abil was the Lady Warriors’ lone double-digit scorer with 11 points from 10 attacks and 1 block.

After UE held a slim lead over the Golden Tigresses in the opening frame, 8-7, UST pulled away with a run sparked by Jimenez' back-to-back service aces, 17-15.

Errors doomed the Lady Warriors' comeback bid as UST took the opening frame, 25-20.

UST assumed control of the 2nd set after a massive 8-1 run highlighted by 3 service aces, 16-9.

Although UE closed it to a one-point game, 19-20, the Lady Warriors' back-to-back errors again stretched the lead for UST as the España-based squad nabbed another 25-20 decision for a 2-0 lead in the match.

UE looked to turn things around with a 9-5 lead in the first technical timeout of the 3rd set, but UST managed to tie the game at 9-all.

Jimenez powered the Golden Tigresses anew to take the lead, 14-12 and UST never looked back to seal the win. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws finally got one over the University of the Philippines (UP).

At the mercy of the Lady Maroons since the preseason, FEU finally snatched a win over UP in 4 sets, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday, April 6 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

FEU leaned on the stellar performances of its veterans as the Lady Tamaraws got ahead in the standings for a share of 3rd with University of Santo Tomas at 7-4 and relegated the Lady Maroons to 5th place at 6-5.

Heather Guino-o fired a career-high 22 points off 18 attacks and 4 aces to go with 22 excellent digs and 12 excellent receptions to power a solid FEU showing.

Captain Jerrili Malabanan also impressed with a season-high 17 points, while Kyle Negrito bounced back with 35 excellent sets.

For head coach George Pascua, FEU managed to execute the game plan and most of all, move on from a straight-set beating from Ateneo.

Ang motto namin: ‘Matapang ako, lalaban ako, kaya ko.’ So iyon ’yung inemphasize ko sa players ko after namin matalo sa Ateneo,” Pascua said of the Lady Tamaraws, who have been playing minus injured star rookie Lycha Ebon.

(Our motto is: I’m tough, I’ll fight, and I’ll do it. That’s what I emphasized after we lost to Ateneo.)

UP’s Tots Carlos took  topscoring duties, leading the team with 22 points off 19 spikes, 2 aces and 1 block while veteran Isa Molde returned from injury but played limited limits.

FEU had a stronger finish in the opening frame, pulling away as Ivana Agudo’s spike sparked a decisive 11-2 run on the way to a 25-21 set lead.

UP, though, turned back the Lady Tamaraws in the next frame, 25-19, by capitalizing on their errors to equalize the match at one set apiece.

The Lady Maroons sustained their second set-momentum with a 6-0 start to the 3rd set, but FEU managed to erase their deficit as a 6-2 run midway in the set knotted the score at 17-all.

FEU pulled all the way to set point, 24-19, until UP unleashed a 4-0 comeback that was only halted by a Czarina Carandang check for a 2-1 FEU match lead.

It was a neck-and-neck battle in the 4th set but FEU broke the deadlock at the end-game as France Ronquillo’s ace capped off the Lady Tamaraws’ 3-0 spurt, 23-19.

Carlos lifted the Lady Maroons with back-to-back attacks, but Malabanan’s check notched match point before Guino-o sealed the win.  – Rappler.com

SENSATIONAL. Fil-Am forward Taylor Statham drops 10 points to lift Pasig Grindhouse to the playoff round. Photo release

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine teams Pasig Grindhouse Kings and 1Bataan Risers advanced to the playoffs of the Chooks-to-Go 3x3 Asia Pacific Super Quest at the SM Megamall Fashion Hall on Saturday, April 6.

Taylor Statham powered the President's Cup champions to a 21-15 win over Absolute 3x3 of Chinese Taipei as they claimed the top seed in Pool C.

The 6-foot-6 Fil-Am forward was sensational all game long with his 10 points, including 2 of the final 4 that put the Taiwanese to rest.

Top Filipino 3x3 player Joshua Munzon and Serbian import Nikola Pavlovic both had 4 points as Troy Rike added 3 to arrange a quarterfinal duel against TSV Reading Cinema of Australia that will take place on Sunday, April 7, 1pm at the same venue.

"Honestly, it's a testament to who we are as people off the court. We're all very close," said Statham. "Nikola has done a great job of coming in and adding into our team and not taking anything away. We all compete hard and we just love playing together, you can see it to how we play."

On the other hand, Bataan showed tremendous resolve in a tough 17-21 defeat to world No. 19 Tokyo Dime.exe of Japan as it settled for 2nd place in Pool B.

Travis Franklin's 10-point output was no match for the opposition's hot streak from deep, with top Japanese 3x3 player Tomoya Ochiai firing 9 points in the win.

Keita Suzuki also had all of his 6 points from deep for Tokyo Dime.exe, as the Philippine side got little help from their locals.

The defeat dropped the Risers to 1-1, as they are set for a quarterfinal clash against SSLC of China in a match scheduled Sunday at 12:20 pm.

On the other hand, Tokyo Dime faces New Zealand's Aotearoa at 12pm.

World no. 15 Ulaanbaatar of Mongolia claimed the top seed in Pool A with a tough 16-14 win over TSV Reading Cinemas of Australia, while Jakarta West Bandits also scored a 21-16 triumph against Absolute 3x3 in the Pool C face off. The two teams will meet each other in the knockout playoffs at 12:00nn.

Zheng Yuqi also buried a long bomb with 1:44 remaining to propel SSLC to the top of Pool D with a 21-18 win over Aotearoa of New Zealand.

That win wasted the gutsy showing of Saigon Aces, which scored a 16-15 shocker over the Chinese crew behind Ryan Monteclaro's free throw with 4.4 seconds on the clock.

The champion of the Asia Pacific Super Quest will book tickets to both the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Masters Doha from April 18 to 19 and the Challenger Series in Penang from May 12 to 13. Moreover, it will bring home US $20,000.

The runners-up will also head to the Doha tournament while pocketing $15,000. The 3rd and 4th place finishers will qualify for the Challenger Series in Kunshan from May 18 to 19 with the former also banking US $7,000 while the latter being rewarded with  $4,000 for their effort.

The 5th to 8th-placed teams will be given  $1,000 as consolation. – Rappler.com

CARDIAC GAME. Terrence Romeo (left) and the Beermen survive a thriller against RR Pogoy and the KaTropa. Photo from PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines – The San Miguel Beermen survived the TNT KaTropa, 80-78, to kick off their best-of-3 quarterfinals series in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup playoffs at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, April 6.

A balanced scoring effort proved key for the Beermen, who were led with three 15-point outings, most notably from former TNT guard Terrence Romeo.

It was a game of runs in the first 3 quarters, with TNT repeatedly negating San Miguel's rallies en route to a 65-60 lead at the end of the 3rd.

However, the Beermen finally broke through with an 8-2 run to open the 4th, ending with a go-ahead layup by Christian Standhardinger with 9:04 left in regulation.

With the offense from both squads slowing down the stretch, Chris Ross made it a two-possession lead for SMB, 75-71, off split free throws at the 4:32 mark.

But the unyielding Troy Rosario soon tied the game up, 75-all, after 4 straight charities in consecutive possessions.

After RR Pogoy split another TNT trip at the line, Rosario got back and sank the smooth turnaround shot for the 78-75 advantage at the 2:17 mark of the game.

Not to be outdone, five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo hit TNT back with two straight shots from close-range to take back the lead, 79-78, in the last 63 ticks of regulation.

After a costly Pogoy turnover in the final 27 seconds, Kelly Williams got called for a loose ball foul after grabbing Fajardo's shorts in a rebound battle. Fajardo, however, left an open window for TNT after splitting from the line, 80-78.

Pogoy had 2.2 seconds to heave a game-winner off the timeout, but his last shot clanked off as time expired.

Fajardo had 15 points and 10 rebounds with 4 blocks in the win while Marcio Lassiter also had 15 markers with 6 boards.

TNT, meanwhile, saw Rosario's 23-point outing go to waste as they fell 0-1 in the series. Pogoy added 16 markers, but needed 20 shots to get there.

The series moves to the Araneta Coliseum on Monday, April 8 as SMB looks to finish off TNT.

The Scores

San Miguel 80 - Romeo 15, Lassiter 15, Fajardo 15, Cabagnot 12, Santos 8, Ross 6, Standhardinger 5, Pessumal 2, Ganuelas-Rosser 2, Nabong 0.

TNT 78 - Rosario 23, Pogoy 16, Trollano 11, Williams 9, Castro 8, Taha 8, Reyes 2, Semerad, A. 1, Heruela 0, Carey 0, Washington 0, Semerad, D. 0.
