MANILA, Philippines – Jitters and a mild sprain could not stop rookie Troy Rosario from leaving a mark in his PBA playoff debut with the Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters.

This year’s second overall draft pick made an impression Saturday, December 26, leading the Texters to a 90-88 escape of sister team NLEX Road Warriors in phase 1 of the 2016 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.

Rosario, 23, posted a team-high 20 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and dished out an assist in the win that shoved TNT into quarterfinals phase 2. They will face Rain or Shine in a sudden death match to make the semifinals Monday, December 28 at 7 pm.

“At first I felt stunned. That’s why I scored only two points in the first half. It was like my hands were too heavy and I did not want to shoot,” the former UAAP champion out of National University said in Filipino of the jitters he experienced.

“I was hesitant to shoot but when I came out in the second half I just told myself I will shoot the ball this time.”

At halftime, Rosario resigned himself to stepping up and playing better in the last two quarters. He overcome that first obstacle but later on had to weather a mild left ankle sprain he sustained early in the third period on a drive.

“The coaches kept asking me if I can go on. I said I can do it,” Rosario shared. “They trusted me and put me in even with an injury. And my teammates were all really determined to win this game.”

The 6-foot-7 big man played almost 35 minutes and made 9 of his 16 attempts from the field including a pair of 3-pointers. His triple capped an 8-1 run late in the fourth, giving Talk ’N Text an 88-81 advantage with 2:26 left.

“Their trust never goes away, my teammates keep passing me the ball. I could never have done that if my team didn’t trust me. I’m just happy my shots went in and I was able to help,” said Rosario, who also stepped up as top rookie Moala Tautuaa struggled and played just under 9 minutes.

Rosario is bracing for a tough battle against the Painters on Monday. He will attend practice Sunday with his left ankle heavily taped.

“That’s what we need. Ranidel (De Ocampo) is out so everyone has to step up. It just so happened I stepped up this time,” he said. “But every game I just stay aggressive and I’ll do what the coaches ask of me.” – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) — Stanley Pringle and Terrence Romeo combined for 48 points and the Globalport Batang Pier survived Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in overtime, 84-83, in the knockout quarterfinals of 2016 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday, December 27 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Batang Pier entered the semifinals for the first time in franchise history. They joined the league in 2012.

“Credit to the boys, they deserve to go to the semifinals,” said head coach Pido Jarencio. “I really give credit to Terrence, Stanley and the rest of the guys. I told them at halftime they are deserving, this is a good team, we deserve to go to the semis so we have to work harder in the second half.”

Pringle topscored with 25 points making 10 of his 18 field goals to go with 8 rebound, an assists and a block. Romeo added 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, including 5 3-pointers.

The backcourt duo gave Globalport the advantage in overtime on consecutive baskets, 79-74, with 3:27 left to play. Jay Washington, who chipped in 13 points and 5 boards, later buried a triple from the corner to briefly stretch the lead to 82-76 before LA Tenorio stole those 3 points right back with his own trey, 82-79.

But Pringle, who was picked first overall in the 2014 draft, then zig zagged through the solo defense of 7-footer Greg Salughter for the Batang Pier’s final two points, 84-80, with under a minute remaining.

Japeth Aguilar came up with 3 points on a split from the line and a bucket underneath before the game was marred by controversy.

Ginebra stayed on the court well after the final buzzer with players and head coach Tim Cone pleading for a review of the final Globalport possession with 8 seconds remaining.

In that last posssession, Washington received the ball on the inbound then handed it off to Stanley Pringle and Ginebra immediately attempted a trap on the guard by the halfcourt line.

But as the seconds ticked away, no foul call or 5-second ball-hogging violation was called on Pringle before he was finally able to pass the ball out to Romeo on the wing and time expired, leaving fans and the Ginebra team stunned at the result.

According to PBA Media Bureau Chief Willie Marcial, Cone signed the official scorecard and the team will have until 12 noon on Monday, December 28 to file a letter of protest together with a bond.

“We all know Ginebra is a tough team and coach Tim is a good coach but those were breaks of the game,” Jarencio said of the controversial play. “We got that 3-point lead and then they made the shot and we designed a play. Breaks of the game, they did not call it, whatever it was. I also think there was a foul but they didn’t call it.”

Joseph Yeo added 11 points for Globalport, who will clash with Alaska in a best-of-7 semifinals in January.

Slaughter led the ousted Gin Kings with 25 points, 18 rebounds and two blocks. Tenorio, who put Ginebra on top 72-69 late in regulation, finished with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and two steals.

Joe Devance added 12 points for the fallen Ginebra, who was fresh from an epic overtime victory over rivals Star Hotshots on Christmas Day.

Scores:

Globalport (84): Pringle 25, Romeo 23, Washington 13, Yeo 11, Mamaril 4, Kramer 3, Semerad 3, Jensen 2, Maierhofer 0, Pena 0, Sumang 0.

MANILA, Philippines – The knockout quarterfinals match between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the Globalport Batang Pier ended in controversy on Sunday, December 27 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

As the final buzzer sounded, more than half of the crowd comprised of Ginebra fans was left stunned along with players and the Ginebra coaching staff. Head coach Tim Cone immediately went to center court and pleaded with the referees for a call or a review of the final 8-second possession of Globalport.

In that last posssession, Washington received the ball on the inbound then handed it off to Stanley Pringle and Ginebra immediately attempted a trap on the guard by the halfcourt line.

But as the seconds ticked away, no foul call or 5-second ball-hogging violation was called on Pringle before he was finally able to pass the ball out to Romeo on the wing and time expired.

Boos rained down on the celebrations of Globalport, which came out victorious, 84-83, and will enter the PBA semifinals for the first time in franchise history.

According to PBA Media Bureau Chief Willie Marcial, Cone signed the official scorecard and the team will have until 12 noon on Monday, December 28 to file a letter of protest together with a bond.

Ginebra assistant coach Olsen Racela said the team did not talk about any plans for a protest inside the locker room after the loss, but they will instead meet about it Monday.

Cone refused interview requests and immediately left the arena, saying that he didn’t want to say anything that could get him into trouble.

Guard LA Tenorio shared that Cone instructed the players to trap in that last possession. But the veteran admitted he also felt there should have been a call.

“I think it was a 5-second violation because you can count it obviously with the time left. And I saw him step on halfcourt (line) too,” he told reporters in a mix of Filipino and English. “But they didn’t call it so it depends, what the management and coaching staff will do.”

“Breaks of the game, it wouldn’t have come to that if not for our lapses during the game,” he added.

Batang Pier coach Pido admitted he thought there was a foul in that final sequence but similarly chalked it up to breaks of the game.

“Breaks of the game, they did not call it, whatever it was. I also think there was a foul but they didn’t call it,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines – Fueled by frustration, PBA fans reportedly resorted to throwing coins at Globalport forward Jay Washington Sunday, December 27 outside the Mall of Asia Arena.

According to Marisse Panaligan of GMA News Online, angry fans hurled coins at Washington's car, clearly still upset over the controversial 84-83 overtime loss of Barangay Ginebra to Globalport in the 2016 PBA Philippine Cup knockout quarterfinals.

Washington, who finished with 13 points and 5 rebounds in the victory, was inside his car and driving away from the arena and reportedly yelled back at the fans, "Better luck next conference!"

The Ginebra-Globalport sudden death match was marred by a controversial end as the Gin Kings were left stunned over what is perceived to be a non-call in the final 8-second possession of the Batang Pier.

In that last posssession, Washington received the ball on the inbound then handed it off to Stanley Pringle and Ginebra immediately attempted a trap on the guard by the halfcourt line.

But as the seconds ticked away, no foul call or 5-second ball-hogging violation was called on Pringle before he was finally able to pass the ball out to Terrence Romeo on the wing and time expired.

PBA players took to Twitter to try and placate fans, particularly Ginebra fans, who rained boos on the celebration of Globalport after the game.

Panthers' quest for perfect NFL season spoiled by Falcons

LOS ANGELES, USA - The Carolina Panthers' pursuit of a perfect NFL season ended Sunday, December 27 with a stunning 20-13 loss to the Falcons in Atlanta.

In the penultimate week of the regular season the Panthers were aiming to move to 15-0, but the Falcons, fighting for their playoff lives, had other ideas.

Julio Jones leapt over two defenders to reel in a spectacular 70-yard touchdown catch and rookie Vic Beasley sealed the triumph by forcing a fumble from Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in the final minute that the Falcons recovered.

Atlanta avenged a 38-0 blowout loss to the Panthers on December 12, and kept their slim post-season hopes alive, although wins for either Seattle or Minnesota later in the day would eliminate them.

The Panthers can still secure home-field advantage throughout the National Football Conference playoffs with an Arizona Cardinals loss to the Green Bay Packers later Sunday.

But the 2007 New England Patriots remain the only NFL team to post a 16-0 regular season.

After riding roughshod over the league that year, the Patriots were stunned in the Super Bowl by the New York Giants.

The 1972 Miami Dolphins are the only team to record a perfect championship season -- going 14-0 in the regular season before winning three playoff games that included a Super Bowl triumph over the Washington Redskins.

Newton had two chances to lead comeback drives late in the fourth quarter but couldn't find the end zone.

The play of the game was Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan's deep throw to Jones, who went airborne to elude defenders Charles Tillman and linebacker Luke Kuechly then raced into the end zone.

Jones finished with 178 yards on nine receptions and broke his own Falcons record for receiving yards in a season. Ryan completed 23 of 30 passes for 306 yards. His touchdown pass to Jones was the 200th of his career. – Rappler.com

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - Former El Salvador international defender Alfredo Pacheco, who was banned for life for match-fixing in 2013, was shot and killed on Sunday, December 27 as he left a gas station, police said.

Two friends who were traveling with the 33-year-old were hurt in the attack which took place in Santa Ana, 66km west of the capital San Salvador, the police spokesman added.

"The former international was killed by a group of unknown assailants as he left a petrol station with friends," said the official.

Pacheco, whose 86 appearances between 2002-13 for El Salvador are a national record, was banned for life in September 2013 for his role in a match-fixing scandal between 2010 and 2012. He scored 7 international goals during his career.

Thirteen of his teammates in the national squad were also kicked out of the game.

El Salvador has been plagued by gang violence in recent years with more than 6,000 murders reported between January and November, almost the double the recorded figure for the same period in 2014, according to a national watchdog, IML. – Rappler.com

NBA: Westbrook keys Thunder rally past Nuggets

LOS ANGELES – Russell Westbrook poured in 30 points with 12 assists and 9 rebounds on Sunday, December 27 (Monday, December 28 in Manila) as the Oklahoma City Thunder rallied for a 122-112 NBA victory over the visiting Denver Nuggets.

Thunder forward Kevin Durant added 26 points and 10 assists for his 8th double-double of the season as Oklahoma City bounced back from a Christmas Day loss to the Chicago Bulls.

{source} <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BWzHk6Q0css" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> {/source}

As they had two days earlier, the Thunder got off to a slow start, largely because they were unable to contain Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried.

Faried scored 10 of his 25 points and pulled down 3 offensive rebounds in the first 6 minutes.

Denver, effectively double-teaming Durant, led 61-53 at halftime. They extended the lead to 11 points to open the third quarter, but Durant scored 12 points in the third period to help the Thunder take a one-point lead into the final frame.

With 7:17 left in the fourth, Thunder center Enes Kanter completed a 3-point play to give the hosts a 101-97 advantage.

Kanter added two free throws to stretch the lead to 6, and a layup from Joffrey Lauvergne, a Westbrook Dunk and a fastbreak Dunk from Serge Ibaka put Oklahoma City up 107-99 with 5:09 to play.

Denver again cut the lead to 3 but would get no closer, Durant delivering two layups and Dion Waiters converting a steal into a dunk as the Thunder rolled to the finish.

"I do think we're capable of being better," Thunder coach Billy Donovan said. "I think we've shown that. I think the concentration, the focus and just the will to defend at the level I think we're capable of defending has to be an area we continue to grow and get better at."

Grizzlies halt skid

In Memphis, the Grizzlies snapped a two-game skid with a 112-96 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

With the win, the Grizzlies took their record to 17-16, avoiding dropping below .500 for the first time since November 15.

"We just wanted to win," said the Grizzlies' Spanish center Marc Gasol, who scored 16 points with 6 assists. "Last night (in Charlotte) we played two and a half quarters of good basketball and it's not enough."

The Lakers went into the game allowing a league-worst 107.2 points per game, and could do little to slow the Grizzlies offense.

Memphis connected on 45 of 80 shots for a 56.2 percent average and handed out a season-high 30 assists.

"We need to focus a lot more," Lakers coach Byron Scott said of his team's defense.

"Seems like we are stepping too slow. I don't think it's physical to be honest with you, because tonight the effort was there. From the mental standpoint, we just look like we're fried."

But Lakers veteran Kobe Bryant was again feeling the physical strain, this time with a sore right knee.

"Honestly, I wasn't going to play," Bryant said, adding that he changed his mind because he knew that with his retirement coming at the end of the season, fans across the country are turning out to see him play.

"I got on the bus and saw all the fans," Bryant said of the sizeable contingent of Lakers backers in attendance. "I would feel really awful if I didn't come in here and play." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Vince Carter will always go down as one of the best dunkers the game of basketball has ever seen, and even at age 38, the former All-Star can still get up in the air and provide a highlight.

That took place during the Memphis Grizzlies’ dominant 112-96 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, December 28, when Carter attacked the lane early in the second quarter.

The former NBA Slam Dunk champion blew past his defender Lou Williams, and then lifted up for a right-handed slam, giving his team a 40-31 lead.

There were 3 Lakers in the paint, but none got up to contest the attempt.

REFEREE HEARING. PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa will set a hearing with referees to discuss what happened during the controversial end to Globalport and Ginebra's quarterfinals match. Photo by Josh Albelda/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa called for a technical committee meeting together with PBA referees to assess the controversial end to the quarterfinals knockout match between Barangay Ginebra and Globalport in the 2016 PBA Philippine Cup.

“Regarding the officiating and to be fair, we have scheduled a hearing for the 4 referees tomorrow, the 29th of December, to determine their performance. After that we shall come out with our official action on them,” said a statement from the Office of the Commissioner.

Narvasa will meet with the 4 referees who officiated the game on Sunday, December 27 – Edward Aquino, Romell Gruta, Mardy Montoya, and Bing Oliva.

Globalport’s 84-83 win over Ginebra ended in controversy after Ginebra complained that a foul or a 5-second ball hogging violation on Stanley Pringle should have been called in the final 8 seconds of the game.

(READ: Ginebra-Globalport PBA quarterfinals game marred by controversial end)

The eliminated Gin Kings had a chance to file a letter of complaint to the Commissioner's Office plus a bond of at least P20,000 until noon on Monday, but they did not do so, according to league media bureau chief Willie Marcial.

“As far as the PBA is concerned the game has already been concluded,” the PBA also said in the statement.

Ginebra was overcome by emotion and left stunned after the final buzzer, with head coach Tim Cone storming into the court pleading to the officials for a review or a call. He eventually signed the official scoresheet and politely declined requests for interview, leaving the Mall of Asia Arena early.

But he later took to Twitter to assure fans the league’s most popular ballclub will bounce back.

“That’s what’s good about our PBA ballclubs, they have that spirit of sportsmanship and of being a gentleman,” added Marcial.

It took much longer for fans to get past the stinging loss as the situation ecalated outside of the arena, where fans reportedly threw coins at Globalport forward Jay Washington’s car.

MANILA, Philippines - From glorious triumphs inside the cage to heartbreaking turn of events, it can be said that 2015 is one for the books, with the Philippines shining in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA).

A Filipino-American fighter managed to walk away with a world title around his waist this year despite the controversy of facing another short-notice opponent, while another one took an exit from the sport in a story-book ending.

2015 was a momentous year for Philippine MMA as the archipelago rolled out a red carpet for the sport’s most-renowned organization, but the local scene was also muddled with grief over the dreadful passing of a well-loved Pinoy combatant.

Through it all, Rappler lists down the top 10 moments that left an indelible niche in Philippine MMA in 2015.

10. UFC’s first Philippine event

After numerous attempts to stage a Philippine event in 4 years, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) announced in January that the world’s premier MMA promotion would host its first fight card in the country dubbed “Fight Night 66” on May 16.

The UFC has long held interest in the Philippines, with plans for “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series to be staged in the country being talked about as early as 2011.

In addition, the Philippines had been listed as one of UFC’s target markets for an overseas show.

UFC’s maiden showcase in the Philippines was headlined by a featherweight super-fight between former UFC lightweight titlist Frankie Edgar and two-division champion Urijah Faber.

Edgar solidified his status as the next contender for the featherweight championship by lopsidedly outpointing Faber via unanimous decision with 3 identical marks of 50-45.

Along with the action-packed affair, the Las Vegas-based company catered a festive fight week as its top fighters were in attendance for UFC Fight Night 66 such as flyweight titleholder Demetrious Johnson, Miesha Tate, Alistair Overeem and Bryan Caraway.

{source}<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/a62HMihh8lk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

With the solid debut at the box office and an energetic crowd once the event kicked off, UFC executive Kenneth Berger confided to Rappler that the organization is likely to make a return to the Philippines.

9. PXC partners with Solaire

Pacific Xtreme Combat (PXC) is moving to its new home in the Philippines as the Guam-based MMA promotion signed a lucrative deal with Solaire Resort and Casino, a 5-star hotel that will host 4 of its fight cards in 2016 at its luxurious Grand Ballroom with a seating capacity of 1,258 including an elevated premium section.

Elevating its loyal audience’s viewing experience by upgrading to a world-class location, PXC plans to go all out next year by announcing 4 event dates to be staged at Solaire’s state-of-the-art ballroom: January 16, April 2, July 6 and November 5.

PXC has staged 14 of its last 27 cards in Manila, and since its first Philippine venture in June 2011, it has been a staple of the local MMA scene, spawning talented Filipino contenders like Crisanto Pitpitunge, Jenel Lausa, Mark Striegl, Ale Cali, Glen Ranillo and Rolando Gabriel Dy.

The organization likewise served as the footstool for MMA competitors such as Roldan Sangcha-an, Jon Tuck, Hyun Gyu Lim, Dustin Kimura, Louis Smolka and Michinori Tanaka to be noticed by the UFC.

8. Pitpitunge, Dy misses weight for PXC titles

Homegrown talents Crisanto Pitpitunge and Rolando Gabriel Dy received world title opportunities on the international stage in June, but both men were barred from vying for the silver-plated straps as they did not meet the contracted weight limits.

Pitpitunge tipped the scales at 126 pounds for his 5-round clash versus PXC flyweight champion Alvin Cacdac, while Dy was a half-pound over the bantamweight border of 135 pounds for his rematch against titleholder Kyle Aguon.

Despite the weigh-in woes of the two combatants, their respective matches pushed through as non-title contests.

Pitpitunge shut the lights off on Cacdac in the first round with a well-timed overhand right and a follow-up right hook to the temple, but Dy fell short by yielding to Aguon via split decision.

7. Lausa knocks out Montilla with one punch

Jenel Lausa earned an elusive crack at the 125-pound weight class’ top prize by avenging his 2013 decision loss to Ernesto Montilla Jr. in their June rematch.

Lausa knocked out Montilla with a thunderous left hook in the last second of the first round.

As a reward, Lausa locks horns with Pitpitunge for the available PXC flyweight belt, which was rendered vacant in June when Cacdac likewise missed weight in his title tilt versus the latter and was stripped of the title.

Lausa and Pitpiunge squares off against each other on January 16, 2016 in the main event of PXC 51, which is the promotion’s first event at Solaire Resort and Casino’s Grand Ballroom in Parañaque City.

6. Australian foe derails Striegl’s title dream

Reece McLaren, who replaced fellow Australian fighter Jordan Lucas on two weeks notice, pulled off a major upset in his ONE Championship debut by submitting Filipino-American sensation Mark Striegl with a rear-naked choke in the co-headliner of the “Spirit of Champions” card in December.

The 24-year-old native of Toowoomba, Queensland overcame a series of takedowns and a second-round knockdown against the highly-favored Striegl, but he methodically chipped away at his opponent with stinging leg kicks.

As his cage counterpart appeared to lose steam in the final frame, McLaren countered a weary takedown attempt in the third round with solid elbows before he advanced to Striegl’s back to latch on a rear-naked choke at the 3:33 mark of the third round.

The disappointing defeat to McLaren derailed Striegl’s goal to face ONE bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes.

It is also the second submission setback of Striegl, who suffered his first prizefighting loss versus Jang Yong Kim in September 2013 for the vacant PXC featherweight title.

5. Eric Kelly’s lackluster return to ONE FC cage

After 15 months on the sidelines due to a contract dispute with ONE, Eric Kelly made a successful return inside the ONE Championship cage by attaining a controversial victory over Japan’s Hiroshige Tanaka this past October.

Even though Tanaka pacified his opponent’s stand-up leverage in the last two rounds, Kelly managed to walk away with a debatable unanimous decision as the featherweight bout was scored in its entirety and not on round-by-round basis.

(READ: ONE FC boss explains Eric Kelly’s ‘frozen’ contract)

Kelly was in control of the entire first frame, where he utilized his striking arsenal from heavy high kicks to lunging right straights before converting a takedown courtesy of Judo hip toss after losing the grip on his Japanese foe’s head for a guillotine choke.

However, Tanaka shifted the momentum on his side in the second canto, where he countered with a solid right hook that completely rocked the Filipino before attaining a belly-to-belly takedown.

Tanaka punctuated the third and final round by getting another takedown and quickly sinking in hooks for a rear-naked choke, but Kelly was saved by the bell.

4. Rise of Eugene Toquero

Eugene Toquero was perhaps the most active Filipino prizefighter in 2015, having booked in 3 matches this year.

Although it was not a clean sweep for him, Toquero started his year with a bang as he took care of Indonesian flyweight Brianata Rosadhi with a volley of vicious elbows to accomplish a first-round stoppage in April.

After bowing down to Asuka “Riku Shibuya” Mikami via unanimous decision in October, Toquero bounced back on a strong note by trouncing Li Wei Bin two months later.

Toquero mauled the Chinese fighter with precision strikes, forcing Li to quit on his stool before the third round.

3. Death of Ale Cali

The entire Philippine MMA community mourned the sudden and tragic demise of one-time PXC flyweight champion Ale Cali.

Cali, 25, was shot in the head by an unidentified gunman in Ulas, Davao City at around 10:30 am on August 16.

According to an eyewitness account, the victim was shot 3 times by an assailant wearing a helmet, who managed to exit fast towards the Toril area of Davao City on a Honda Wave motorcycle with a temporary plate number.

The account also stated that Cali was alighting from his vehicle when he was approached by the suspect, who then pulled the trigger of an assumed caliber .45 pistol at the back of his head.

The Davao City Police Department has yet to determine the motive behind Cali’s murder.

2. Brandon Vera wins first-ever ONE FC heavyweight title

Ex-UFC superstar Brandon Vera made history as the first fighter to win the ONE heavyweight championship by knocking out Paul Cheng in the headliner of this month’s “Spirit of Champions” event.

There was no feeling-out process for Vera, who finished the job in just 26 seconds by dropping Cheng to a knee with a short left hand before clobbering a brutal head kick to the chin.

The title-winning performance was shrouded by controversy as Cheng replaced the Fil-Am stalwart’s original opponent Chi Lewis Parry, who was removed from the bout after reportedly failing to submit his medical records and deciding not to board his scheduled flight on December 8.

Parry denied the claim of ONE, asserting that the organization is misleading the general public.

According to ONE’s head honcho Victor Cui, he and matchmaker Matt Hume have yet to sit down and discuss the course of action with Parry.

1. Mark Muñoz wins farewell fight

“The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Mark Muñoz turned back the clock to dominate young English middleweight Luke Barnatt in his farewell fight at UFC Fight Night 66 on May 16.

Although he was coming off 3 straight stoppage setbacks, the 37-year-old native of Mission Viejo, California returned to top physical form as he overpowered Barnatt over 3 rounds to sweep the judges’ sheets with the scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27.

Muñoz overwhelmed Barnatt from start to finish with repetitive takedowns and solid overhand right to negate the length and height leverage.

The pro-Muñoz crowd at Pasay City’s Mall of Asia Arena erupted in the dying seconds of the third round when he scored a single-leg takedown and concluded it with his signature “Donkey Kong” ground-and-pound.

(READ: Mark Muñoz goes out on his own terms)

Muñoz left his gloves at the center of the Octagon as his sendoff gesture and delivered a heartfelt speech in his post-fight interview.

{source}<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UzauNmzG0cE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>{/source}

“This is something I dreamed about and I hoped for,” Munoz said. “I know I didn’t accomplish what I wanted to accomplish in the cage, but I invested a lot of my time in lives. I’ve been able to help change lives and impact lives in a positive way. That’s what I’m here for.” – Rappler.com

Jerrick Ahanmisi, brother of Rain or Shine's Maverick, wants to play college ball in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines – The brother of Rain or Shine Elasto Painters rookie guard Maverick Ahanmisi, Jerrick, is currently staying in the Philippines and is seeking to play college basketball in the country, with 3 premier UAAP schools arising as possible landing spots.

The 18-year-old from Burbank, California recently graduated high school at Village Christian High School, where he reportedly averaged over 10 points and 3 assists a game at one point in the season according to a report by the Los Angeles Daily News in March.

The report also indicates that Ahanmisi scored 23 points and nailed 7 triples in a game.

“I’ve seen my brother play here since the D-League, and I think the Philippines is a really good fit for me, and the type of play I play, and I just think watching my brother play here in the PBA, I think that hopefully one day I’ll be able to play in the PBA also,” Jerrick told Rappler in an exclusive interview on Monday, December 28.

“I love physical type of play when I play basketball and I just think that the Philippines provides that when they play basketball,” explained the 6-foot-1 point guard and shooting guard.

Jerrick’s brother Maverick, 24, was drafted third overall by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the 2015 PBA Draft and is currently averaging 8.3 points, 4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists a game.

(READ: Maverick Ahanmisi embraces pressure that comes with being 3rd pick)

But while his brother played college ball in the United States for University of Minnesota, Jerrick, who says he tries to model his game after his idol Kobe Bryant, wants to take the more traditional path to the pro league here in the country.

He’s already practiced with the basketball teams of 3 UAAP schools: National University, Ateneo, and La Salle.

“Ateneo is like a university in the States. It’s gated. Everything is gated and you get to walk around inside the school, and then when you walk out, there’s food everywhere,” he shared about his impression of the university.

“La Salle, they have like a little mall in the middle, so it’s like they got shoes there, they got food there, you can get your hair cut.

“NU is like, they got different floors, but the top floor is where the basketball court is, and it’s kind of an exercise. I have to walk up the stairs and stuff, but it was cool.”

Jerrick says he’s hopeful that his practice sessions can land him a roster spot with even just one of universities. Since he hasn’t enrolled in any school in the United States and is straight out of high school, he wouldn’t have to go through residency and can play as soon as next UAAP season if lined up by a team.

“I think, hopefully, I’ll get in one of the schools, but if they don’t see the potential that I have, then it’s their choice,” said Jerrick, who shared that he’s had only one practice sessions with each of the 3 universities. Still, he's confident about what he showed.

{source} <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vM7DyXSzQLU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> {/source}

“All I want to do is really play here in the Philippines, and whatever opportunity I get, I’m going to take it,” he said.

The Filipino-American said one of the moments that made him realize he really wanted to play ball here took place back in October, while he was watching a UAAP game.

“I saw one UAAP game, it was FEU and La Salle I think, it was like the beginning of the season and all, and even though it was the beginning of the season, the whole crowd was filled, and you can hear the drums going, you can hear the crowd chanting as loud as they can,” he said.

“It was crazy. I told my brother when I was watching, ‘I need to play here, bro, I got to play here.’ It was so much fun.”

In the event he doesn’t get to play college hoops in the country right away, Ahanmisi won’t give up on his dream.

“If I go back, then hopefully, cause I’m still young, so I’m probably just going to go to a prep school for one year and then see if any other school wants to get me or wants me to play for them, so that’s kind of like my backup,” he said.

But he hasn’t only come up with a back-up plan. The young talent already knows what his plans are even after his days as a basketball player.

“Business and Management,” he said, when asked what degrees he wants to take up while playing college hoops, “so that hopefully after my basketball career, I know how to start a business up or run a business.” – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters established a double-digit lead early and held on late to defeat and eliminate the Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters, 104-89, during phase two of the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals on Monday, December 28, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Raymond Almazan led the way for Rain or Shine with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks, including a message-sending rejection of Moala Tautuaa late in the first half.

Playing in a sudden death scenario, Rain or Shine beat Talk ’N Text, which entered the matchup having eliminated the Elasto Painters the last 3 times they faced in a postseason series (’13 Philippine Cup, ’14 Commissioner’s Cup, ’15 Commissioner’s Cup).

Rain or Shine now advances to the semifinals, where they face a familiar rival in the San Miguel Beermen in a best-of-7 series.

Besides entering the series as the defending champion, San Miguel also comes in with nearly 3 weeks of rest thanks to a quarterfinals bye as one of the top two seeds during the elimination round.

The last time Rain or Shine and San Miguel faced in a playoff series was during the 2015 Governors’ Cup, where the Beermen eliminated the Elasto Painters in 4 games.

“We finally were able to finish what we weren’t able to finish against NLEX,” said Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao after the contest.

“We had a chance to make the semis the short route, but we had to go through the long route, and it’s probably because we were not prepared the first time.”

The Elasto Painters could have avoided having to play in the quarterfinals if they took care of business against the Road Warriors, but a loss forced them to beat Blackwater and Talk ’N Text for a shot at San Miguel.

Nonetheless, Rain or Shine was dominant against the Tropang Texters. They shot 42% from the floor and forced TNT to 37% shooting, as well as 20 turnovers.

A total of 7 guys scored in double-figures for Guiao’s club. Don Trollano finished with 14 points while Jeff Chan had 13. Gabe Norwood and Jericho Cruz put up 11 points apiece.

Jayson Castro led Talk ’N Text with 25 points and 11 rebounds while top rookie pick Moala Tautuaa had 14 points and 8 boards. Rookie Troy Rosario, who scored 10 points in the loss, left the game in the fourth clutching his shoulder after having the ball stolen from him by Chan.

Tough road 'a blessing'

“It’s a blessing in disguise we had to go through the hard way, but this is just going to toughen us up going into the semifinals. That’s how we look at it. That’s our perspective. We want to look at this thing in a positive way,” said Guiao, who finally had a team beat Talk ’N Text in a playoff series for the first time in 13 years.

It was just an 84-75 lead for Rain or Shine entering the fourth quarter, but a 7-0 run led by Maverick Ahanmisi and Chan pushed the edge to 16, and the Elasto Painters didn’t look back from there.

Rain or Shine’s first game against San Miguel will take place on January 5, Tuesday. The team expects to have star guard Paul Lee (knee) in uniform, even if he’s been out of action the entire conference.

“Paul is going to play in the semis,” said Guiao. “We also wanted to win this game because we also wanted Paul to participate. We wanted Paul to be able to contribute, and he’s just aching to play, and I think by January he can be ready.”

The head coach added about his star player: “He’s not going to be 100% January 5, but he can be there very quickly. Paul is determined and he’s talented so it won’t take too much time.”

Scores:

Rain or Shine (104): Almazan 15, Trollano 14, Chan 13, Cruz 11, Norwood 11, Quinahan 11, Ahanmisi 10, Ponferada 8, Belga 6, Tiu 5, Ibanes 0.

Talk ’N Text (89): Castro 25, Tautuaa 14, Aban 11, Reyes R. 10, Rosario 10, Seigle 10, Williams 5, Reyes J. 2, Fonacier 1, Rosser 1, Ababou 0, Carey 0, Miranda 0.

Quarter scores: 26-20, 52-44, 84-75, 104-89. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters expect superstar guard Paul Lee to see action when they face the defending PBA Philippine Cup champion San Miguel Beermen in the conference semifinals which begin next Tuesday, January 5.

Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao said after his team’s quarterfinals win over the Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters on Monday, December 28, that Lee, who has been out of action this entire conference due to a knee injury, will play during the best-of-7 series.

“Paul is going to play in the semis,” said Guiao, who notched his first win in a playoff series against Talk ’N Text in 13 years.

“We also wanted to win this game because we also wanted Paul to participate. We wanted Paul to be able to contribute, and he’s just aching to play, and I think by January he can be ready.”

(SCHEDULE: 2016 PBA Philippine Cup Semifinals)

Lee was ruled out for two months of play after it was announced prior to the 41st PBA season that he suffered a slight tear to his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus, according to a report by Interaksyon.

Last season, Lee averaged a career-high 15.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 53 games for Rain or Shine, plus was named to the PBA’s Mythical First Team.

“He’s not going to be 100% [on] January 5,” admitted Guiao, “but he can be there very quickly. Paul is determined and he’s talented so it won’t take too much time.”

By beating Talk ’N Text, Rain or Shine advanced to the PBA semifinals for an eighth straight conference - the current longest streak in the PBA.

The last time they took on the Beermen in a playoff series was during last season’s Governors’ Cup semis when San Miguel advanced to the finals in 4 games, 3-1.

As one of the top two seeds during the PBA elimination round, San Miguel received an instant bye to the semifinals. By the time their first game against Rain or Shine arrives, it will have been 3 weeks since they last played on December 16 - a loss to the Alaska Aces.

In the other semifinal series, the Aces will take on the GlobalPort Batang Pier. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Only 4 teams remain in the hunt for the 2015-2016 PBA Philippine Cup title.

Thanks to clinching the top two seeds during the elimination round, the San Miguel Beermen and Alaska Aces have spent the last few weeks resting while their opponents had to claw their way to the semifinals.

The Aces, a finalist in last year’s PBA Philippine Cup, will take on a new semis player in the GlobalPort Batang Pier, which made franchise history by beating Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

On the other end, the defending champion Beermen face a familiar rival in the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, who are expected to have its star player Paul Lee returning to action.

MANILA, Philippines - Unbeaten Filipino prospect Harmonito Dela Torre will make his American debut on January 22 when he faces Mexican Rafael Guzman in an 8-round junior lightweight fight at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona.

The news was announced in a press release from American television network Showtime, which will broadcast the fight as part of a ShoBox: The New Generation card featuring 4 bouts. The card will be promoted by Greg Cohen Promotions.

The 21-year-old Dela Torre (17-0, 12 knockouts) of General Santos City, Philippines will have less than a month to adjust to new trainer Osmiri “Moro” Fernandez, who will work with Dela Torre in Miami, Fla., Dela Torre's Philippine promoter Jim Claude Manangquil told Rappler prior to the fight's announcement. Dela Torre arrived in the United States on Monday, December 28.

Fernandez, a native of Cuba, also trains interim WBA lightweight titleholder Ismael Barroso and former WBA lightweight titleholder Richar Abril, and has worked with former champions Victor Ortiz, Tomoki Kameda and Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Guzman (16-1-1, 10 KOs) of Ensenada, Mexico is just 20 years old but has been a pro since 2011. His lone defeat came in August of this year, when he lost an 8-round split decision to Abraham Cordero.

Dela Torre, an awkward fighter whose long arms enable him to throw punches from unexpected angles, has had some international experience, fighting twice in Macau on cards promoted by Top Rank, including once on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s decision win over Brandon Rios in 2013.

(READ: Filipino boxer Dela Torre 'hungry' for victory in Macau)

“It's every boxer’s dream to fight on big cards in United States. This is the next step in my pathway to becoming world champion,” Dela Torre was quoted in the press release.

“I hear my opponent is a good fighter, but I am ready for anything he can throw. Everybody is going to be talking about me after this fight,” Guzman is quoted.

The show will be headlined by a 10-round middleweight fight between Rob “Bravo” Brant (18-0, 11 KOs) and Decarlo Perez (15-3-1, 5 KOs).

ShoBox has been a staple of boxing programming in America since 2001, giving exposure to many young fighters early in their careers, including current WBO junior featherweight titleholder Nonito Donaire Jr. The commentators for the show are Barry Tompkins, Steve Farhood and former junior middleweight champion Raul Marquez. – Rappler.com

Harlem Globetrotters legend Meadowlark Lemon dead at 83

WASHINGTON, USA - Meadowlark Lemon, the lithe showman, jester and trick-shot genius who entertained audiences worldwide as the heart and soul of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, has died at age 83, the team announced Monday, December 28.

Lemon, who played 24 years with the Globetrotters during the height of their fame, was a master of razzle-dazzle and good-natured crowd-pleasing hijinks. His legendary hook shots from half court and no-look behind-the-back passes became marquee features of the traveling sports show.

He died Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona, the team said.

Nicknamed the "clown prince of basketball," Lemon was renowned for his comedy routines, including showering referees and fans with water buckets full of confetti.

But the squad in red, white and blue uniforms had also been a thriving professional team, once winning the World Professional Basketball Tournament before the rise of the National Basketball Association.

Lemon never played in the NBA. But his skills and showmanship were such that he eclipsed the popularity of a star recruit straight out of college - Wilt Chamberlain - when the latter joined the Globetrotters for a season before entering the NBA.

"He was an incredible entertainer and brought happiness and lifelong memories to millions around the world. We have lost a great ambassador of the game," Globetrotters chief executive Kurt Schneider said in a statement.

Lemon grew up poor in North Carolina, and joined the team in 1954. He retired from the Trotters in 1979, and then launched a series of his own comedic basketball teams that travelled the country.

He played an astonishing 16,000 games overall in his career, according to his website, including some 7,500 consecutive Globetrotter games.

"Meadowlark was the most sensational, awesome, incredible basketball player I've ever seen," Chamberlain reportedly told a television interviewer not long before his death in 1999.

Global impact

The constant on-court buffoonery - and the belief that the Globetrotters, historically an African-American team, were conducting a sort of minstrel revival - brought criticism during the civil rights era, when some saw the team's antics as demeaning.

Others pointed to the Trotters' diplomatic and cultural impact abroad. The team played several games in Moscow during the Cold War and met with Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev. They performed in front of the pope in Rome, before kings and queens, and for millions of fans in more than 100 countries.

For years on those trips, Lemon was the ringmaster, having taken over the role from Reece "Goose" Tatum. In his prime, Lemon was ranked among the most recognizable athletes in the world.

His fame transcended sports, and he and other Globetrotters were featured on television shows, commercials, and a children's cartoon.

In his later years, Lemon served as a minister and motivational speaker.

Many of the details of Lemon's early life remain hazy. His website says his given name was Meadow Lemon III, and a frequently cited date of birth is April 25, 1932.

He grew up in an era when segregation in sports was the norm, and yet he played for a team, founded in 1926, that helped ultimately bring about the integration of the NBA.

"Man, I've had a good run," Lemon said during his induction into the basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.

In that speech, he noted how he first learned of the Globetrotters when he was 11 and watched a news reel in a theater in North Carolina.

"When they got to the basketball court, they seemed to make that ball talk," Lemon said.

"I said, 'That's mine, this is for me.' I was receiving a vision, I was receiving a dream in my heart."

Tributes from fellow basketball stars poured in.

MANILA, Philippines – Prior to the game between the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, December 29, NBA legend Michael Jordan paid tribute to the retiring Kobe Bryant through a recorded video that was played at the Time Warner Cable Arena in North Carolina.

Jordan, the principal owner of the Hornets and considered by many as the greatest to ever play the game, apologized for being unable to be at the arena but still complimented Bryant on his “unbelievable career” and what he did for the game.

“I’m very happy to leave you this message to say how much we are very proud of what you’ve accomplished over the years,” Jordan said in the video message (READ: Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan will forever be linked)

“I’ve always been like a big brother to you, [and you’re] like a little brother,” Jordan  added later on. “We communicate all the time. I just want to say congratulations.”

CHICAGO, USA - Tony Snell scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Chicago Bulls improved to 12-5 at home with a 104-97 win over the Toronto Raptors on Monday.

Pau Gasol, Derrick Rose and Snell combined for 64 points as 5 players reached double figures for the Bulls, who collected their second NBA victory in 3 games.

Forward Gasol scored 22 points and pulled down 7 rebounds while Rose contributed 20 points and 4 assists for Chicago (17-12). Rose has now registered back-to-back 20 point games for the first time this season.

"It started with him," said Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg. "You can tell he's getting his legs where he wants them.

"Hopefully that's the Derrick Rose we'll see from here on out. We're a pretty good team when we can attack with that type of pace."

Raptors guard Kyle Lowry led all scorers with 28 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Guard DeMar DeRozan added 19 points, eight rebounds and 8 assists for Toronto, who dropped to 19-13.

Toronto dropped its sixth consecutive contest against the Bulls. The Raptors have not beaten Chicago since December 2013.

Snell helped the Bulls pull ahead by double digits in the final quarter. He drove past guard Terrence Ross and forward Luis Scola for a layup to make it 84-74 with 9:22 left in regulation time.

On the next possession, Snell made a 3-pointer to give Chicago a commanding 87-76 lead.

Jonas Valanciunas played his first game for the Raptors after missing 17 contests with a broken hand.

Valanciunas finished with 9 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 21 minutes of playing time.

"They're still a defensive team," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said of Chicago. "They still have remnants. The core is still there. The DNA is still there. They're a very elite team."

Pacers snap Hawks' streak

Guard Monta Ellis scored a season-high 26 points, and the Indiana Pacers snapped Atlanta's 6-game winning streak with a 93-87 win at Bankers Life Fieldhouse arena.

Pacers centre Ian Mahinmi, who scored 13 points, tipped in a missed Ellis shot with 16.3 seconds remaining to give Indiana a 92-87 lead.

Solomon Hill and Chase Budinger each added 10 points for Indiana.

"Everybody's willing to learn and ready to step up when their names called," said Hill, who played 26 minutes on Monday with CJ Miles injured.

The Hawks' win streak was the longest active streak in the NBA.

Paul Milsap led the Hawks with 24 points, Jeff Teague tallied 18, Thabo Sefolosha netted 14 and Al Horford finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hill's driving layup with 6:21 to play pushed the Indiana lead back to 9 at 86-77.

After the Hawks cut the Pacers' lead to 76-73, Budinger and Hill scored consecutive field goals to give Indiana an 80-73 advantage with 8:46 left in the fourth.

Indiana won despite being without Miles, who had a sore back, and not getting much production from all-star Paul George, who scored just 9 points on 3-of-14 shooting from the field.

Indiana shot 43.7 percent and Atlanta shot 41.9 percent, while the Pacers' bench outscored the Hawks' reserves 14-10 in the opening 24 minutes. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – A second go with the Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters in the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup for import and former NBA player Ivan Johnson is still possible, according to team head coach Jong Uichico.

Speaking to the media after his Tropang Texters were eliminated in the Philippine Cup quarterfinals to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Monday, December 28, Uichico confirmed Talk ’N Text has yet to decide on an import for next conference, but expects that decision to be made soon with Johnson as one of the candidates.

Wala pa, wala pa (None yet). We’ll start looking,” the 53-year-old head coach said, before later explaining further:

“I don’t know yet, I don’t know. I’m not sure, but we’ll find an import. We still have some time naman (anyway).”

Johnson, 31, made his PBA debut in the 2015 Commissioner’s Cup when he replaced Richard Howell

The former Atlanta Hawk and NBA D-League All-Star averaged 33.7 points and 14.3 rebounds a game during 6 elimination round contests, and in 12 playoff games put up 23.3 points and 11.9 rebounds a game while shooting 45.4% from the field and 34.2% from downtown, per Humblebola stats.

Attaining Johnson was a wise move for Talk ’N Text as he helped lead the team to a championship after a 7-game finals series against Rain or Shine.

“He’s also considered din naman,” Uichico, a 9-time PBA champion head coach, said about Johnson. “so we’ll make our final decision in the next few days siguro (I guess).

“He’s ready to come naman, so if we decide on bringing him in, then he’ll just come.”

However, there were some controversial moments while he was in the PBA as well.

After Game 1 of the Commissioner’s Cup finals, he was fined P150,000 by the Office of the Commissioner for bumping Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao, who then called out the import.

“I’m not surprised because that’s been his reputation. It’s probably a lack of breeding, it’s a lack of respect,” Guiao said at that time.

“One reason he’s out of the NBA, one reason he’s playing overseas, and not getting a good reputation, is exactly because of what he does,” said Guiao.

After Game 6 of the series, Guiao again called out Johnson by saying he’s “mentally unstable.”

Talk ’N Text also expects to have star big man Ranidel De Ocampo back in action for next conference. The national team player injured his back during a weight-lifting session early in the season and wound up playing just one game in the Philippine Cup.

“He should be. He should be available. He’s about 50, 60 percent, so pag continuous yung training niya (if his training is continuous), he should be back by the second conference,” said Uichico.

“He has not been practicing yet, but he’s been training. He’s running, shooting...” – Rappler.com
