BOCAUE, Philippines – All is good between the Philippines and Australia.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio said they accepted Australia's apology for removing FIBA-approved stickers at the Philippine Arena on the eve of Gilas Pilipinas' clash against the Boomers on Monday, July 2.

"Okay na, they apologized. SBP is good with it but we did make it clear that their actions weren't acceptable," Panlilion told Rappler through text.

The Aussies caught the ire of SBP, Gilas patrons Manny Pangilinan and Ronald Mascariñas and national team head coach Chot Reyes for ripping the sponsors' decals – stickers of Gilas' corporate sponsors on the hardcourt – without permission during a closed-door practice on Sunday, July 1.

Australia had cited the decals were slippery and might cause injuries to their players.

But SBP contested that Australia should have raised their concerns to FIBA officials.

"I think we highlighted the fact that they didn't follow protocol if they had issues. Besides, FIBA approved it," said Panlilion of the stickers, which were also used during Gilas' previous home games in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Panlilio added that top-ranked FIBA officials were informed of what Australia did.

Two hours before the game, the stickers were replaced by the event organizers just in time for the 7:30 pm tip off.

MANILA, Philippines – The United States continued its dominant run in the 2018 FIBA Under-17 World Cup, overwhelming a hapless Mali team, 97-40, in Santa Fe, Argentina on Monday, July 2 (Manila time).

Jalen Green, the Filipino-American athletic freak, showcased his wares in this game, ending with a team-high 15 points along with 3 rebounds and 3 assists on a 5-of-14 (35%) shooting.

The 16-year-old phenom flushed a tomahawk jam in this game off a ball scramble and an overhead pass by Jalen Suggs at the 4:52 mark of the second quarter.

The game expectedly got out of hand very quickly and it soon turned into an American exhibition show.

MOSCOW, Russia – Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta said Sunday, July 1, his international career had ended on a bitter note after his side was knocked out of the World Cup by Russia on penalties.

"It was not a good way to say goodbye, but football and life are like that," said Iniesta, after his 131st and last appearance for his country.

"I am leaving with a nasty taste in the mouth. We screwed ourselves because we didn't manage to make that extra step."

Spain coach Fernando Hierro left 34-year-old Iniesta on the bench for the last-16 match against Russia, but he came on as a second-half substitute.

The match ended 1-1 following extra-time and Russia won 4-3 in a penalty shootout after Iago Aspas' effort was saved by Igor Akinfeev.

Spain joined Argentina, Portugal and Germany among the big guns to have been eliminated from this World Cup, but Iniesta said he believed the future for the Spain team was bright.

"The important thing is to get back to successful ways, which isn't always an easy thing to do. It's harder that it might appear. But there is a new generation, we have high-level players."

Eight years ago Iniesta scored the goal that gave Spain their first ever World Cup in South Africa.

Salah signs new long-term contract with Liverpool

LONDON, United Kingdom – Egyptian international Mohamed Salah's signing of a new long-term contract is a major boost for Liverpool's ambitions of delivering trophies, said manager Jurgen Klopp on Monday.

Klopp added the fact the 26-year-old striker – who scored 44 goals in just 52 appearances last season – had signed such a deal reflected his belief the club were on course for a successful era.

Liverpool have been praised for their freeflowing style of football under Klopp, but the fact remains the charismatic German has taken them to 3 finals in his tenure and fallen short on each occasion.

Salah's goals, after joining last year from Italian outfit AS Roma for an initial £37 million ($48.7 million), played a large part in Liverpool reaching the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

However, that proved a rare sour note for the player as Salah was slammed to the turf by Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos, causing a painful separation of his left shoulder.

World-class talent

Salah returned to action for the first time in 3 weeks against Russia at the World Cup in their group match last month but was a shadow of the player that had dazzled for Liverpool despite scoring against both the Russians and then the Saudi Arabians.

"(The new contract) demonstrates two things very clearly – his belief in Liverpool and our belief in him," Klopp told the Liverpool website.

"I think this news can be seen for what it is; rewarding a person who performed and contributed greatly for the team and the club last season," said Klopp.

"We want world-class talent to see they have a home at Anfield where they can fulfil all their professional dreams and ambitions – we are working hard together to achieve this.

"When someone like Mo Salah commits and says this place is my home now, it speaks very loudly I think.

"Equally, our commitment to him says we see his value and want him to grow even more and get even better within our environment."

Refreshing

Salah's exploits both for Liverpool and Egypt – in inspiring them to their first World Cup finals since 1990 – brought him several awards including African player of the year.

However, Klopp said the refreshing thing about Salah is that he is a team man through and through which will make progressing and winning trophies easier.

"The key thing to remember is the best thing about Mo is that he never sees himself as being more important than the team or anyone else within it," said Klopp.

"He recognizes his teammates and this club helped him achieve individual success last season. He sees the individual awards come because he is part of something bigger that is special."

History

Klopp – who is taking charge of his first day's pre-season training including Guinean arrival Naby Keita signed last year but under the agreement remained with his German club RB Leipzig –  said the club needed to answer their fans demands for continual progress.

"Mo reflects where we are as a team, I think," said Klopp.

"Last season was special with many special moments – but we want more.

"We want to be more successful and achieve more together – as the supporters sang so loudly, 'we're never gonna stop.'

"This has to be the attitude individually and collectively."

Salah registered the second-highest total of goals in a season in Liverpool's history, just 2 behind Ian Rush's record of 47 and surpassing Roger Hunt's haul of 42.

Thirty-two of those came in the Premier League, setting a new record in a 38-game season and earning him the Golden Boot.

Salah was named as both the PFA Players' Player of the Year and the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year for his efforts in 2017-18. – Rappler.com

Australia says it had 'pure' intentions after PH Arena incident

JUST IN TIME. Court decals removed by the Aussies are replaced just in time for the Philippine-Australia game. Photo by Delfin Dioquino/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Australia said it did not intend to disrespect Philippine basketball after it removed FIBA-approved stickers at the Philippine Arena without asking for permission, reiterating its only concern was player safety.

The Aussies found themselves in hot water after ripping off the hardcourt stickers – Gilas Pilipinas' corporate sponsors' decals – during a closed door practice on Sunday, July 1, a day before facing the Filipinos for their final game in the first round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

"We never intended to be disrespectful or to challenge Philippine basketball," said Australia team manager Mark Bradtke in a statement provided to the media.

"Our intentions were pure in rectifying what was potentially a player safety issue for all participants."

Australia had cited that the stickers were slippery and could cause injuries. Coming off a stunning 78-79 loss to Japan last June 29, the Aussies said they just wanted the best, not just for their players but the Philippines' as well.

"As our loss against Japan shows, this is a very tough competition, and we wanted the best environment for all players whose health and safety is critical."

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas' president Al Panlilio said they were "good" with Australia's apology but maintained that what the visitors did "weren't acceptable."

Despite all of the controversy, the court decals were replaced just in time before the two teams locked horns.

"We are very happy with the new court decals. Our concerns were alleviated," Bradtke added. (READ: Gilas backers upset as Australia removes stickers at PH Arena)

"We look forward to using this situation as a building block for basketball to having the best environment for all participants, officials, and fans, and lastly, to maintain our great relations with Philippine basketball." – Rappler.com

PREMATURE ENDING. The Filipinos surrender a 36-point loss to the Aussies with a quarter left to play. Photo by Josh Albelda/Rappler

BOCAUE, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas lost to Australia in the most absurd way as it had no players left to play the Aussies, 53-89, at the end of the first round of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers at the Philippine Arena here on Monday, July 2.

The game ended with less than 14 minutes left to play with 9 Gilas players ejected and the remaining 3 fouling out.

Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro, Calvin Abueva, Andray Blatche, Roger Pogoy, Troy Rosario, Japeth Aguilar, Carl Bryan Cruz and Matthew Wright were all slapped with disqualifying fouls for participating in a bench-clearing brawl  midway through the 3rd quarter. (LOOK: Bench-clearing brawl mars Gilas-Australia game)

June Mar Fajardo, Gabe Norwood and Baser Amer had to face the Boomers – who only had 4 players thrown out, namely, Nathan Sobey, Christopher Goulding, Daniel Kickert and Thon Maker.

However, Fajardo and Norwood eventually fouled out and the contest had to be ended even with Amer still eligible to play as FIBA rules state at least two players should be on the court for the game to continue.

Australia caps off the first round of the Qualifiers at the top of Group B with a 5-1 card while the Philippines settles for second with a 4-2 record. Both teams advance to the second round, which will begin in September.

Free-for-all

Things took an ugly turn with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter as Pogoy shoved Goulding to the ground. In retaliation, Kickert decked Pogoy with his forearms – sparking the scuffle.

Castro, running from near-halfcourt, landed a punch on Kickert as his teammates joined the free-for-all.

Maker, a sophomore center for the Milwauke Bucks, started unleashing flying kicks, most notably against Romeo but entirely missed.

In the replay, Allein Maliksi and Jio Jalalon, who are both part of Gilas' pool but were not included in the lineup against Australia, were seen landing punches against the Australians.

Maliksi unloaded a barrage of blows on Goulding while they were both entangled at the floor while Jalalon connected on a solid hook on Sobey's head.

Even the fans joined the skirmish, throwing plastic bottles at the court. A man wearing a 'Pilipinas' shirt, threw a chair at Sobey's head.

Pulling away early

It was a close bout with Gilas trailing by just 3 points early in the second quarter, 20-23, until the Aussies began to pull away as they uncorked 9 unanswered points for a 32-20 advantage – a lead that ballooned to 15, 52-37, at halftime.

Goulding carried Australia in the 3rd quarter with his torrid outside shooting, burying 3 straight triples that extended the Boomers' lead to 31 points, 79-48, before the melee transpired.

Goulding fired 20 points on a 4-of-5 clip from deep to lead Australia. Kickert finished with 12 points and Matthew Dellavedova had 9 points, 4 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds in the win.

Australia shot a scintillating 61.5% from the field to Gilas' 40% and it had 14 more assists.

Blatche chalked up 12 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists to pace the Filipinos while Fajardo churned out 10 markers.

The Scores:

Australia (89): Goulding 20, Kickert 12, Dellavedova 9, Maker 8, Brandt 8, Lisch 7, Sobey 7, Kay 7, Gliddon 6, Drmic 5, McCarron 0, Cadee 0

Philippines (53): Blatche 12, Fajardo 10, Castro 8, Romeo 6, Aguilar 6, Norwood 4, Pogoy 4, Amer 3, Abueva 0, Wright 0, Rosario 0

Andray Blatche, Calvin Abueva, Terrence Romeo, Carl Bryan Cruz, Matthew Wright were seen in the replay landing punches against their Australian counterparts.

Nine players from Gilas Pilipinas, namely, Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro, Calvin Abueva, Andray Blatche, Roger Pogoy, Troy Rosario, Japeth Aguilar, Carl Bryan Cruz and Matthew Wright were all slapped with disqualifying fouls.

On the Australia's side, Nathan Sobey, Thon Maker, Daniel Kickert and Christopher Goulding were ejected.

June Mar Fajardo, Gabe Norwood and Baser Amer – the remaining Gilas players – had to play 3-vs-5 against Australia before the game had to be ended by default as Fajardo and Norwood fouled out.

FIBA rules state that at least two players should be on the court for the game to proceed.

In a statement, chief executive of Basketball Australia Anthony Moore said they are "extremely disappointed" with what transpired.

“This is not the spirit in which sport should be played and certainly not in the spirit in which we aim to play basketball," said Moore.

"We apologize to our fans and will await the penalties to be handed down.”

DEFENDING GILAS. National team head coach Chot Reyes says the blame can’t be put entirely on the Gilas Pilipinas players. Photo by Josh Albelda/Rappler

BOCAUE, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes said the  bench-clearing brawl between the Philippines and Australia was "absolutely unacceptable," but called out one Australian player for provoking the Filipinos even before the FIBA World Cup Qualifier match on Monday, July 2, at the Philippine Arena.

Reyes immediately singled out Daniel Kickert and defended his team's actions, claiming the Aussie hit 4 Filipino players during the warm-ups.

"It’s absolutely unacceptable but the reality is that (Daniel) Kickert [was] hitting our players during the warm-ups. He hit Carl Bryan Cruz, he hit Matthew Wright, Pogoy and he hit Calvin Abueva during the warm-ups," recalled Reyes.

"So when he did that, the foul of Pogoy on Goulding was an offensive foul, it was a basketball play, but he (Kickert) was the one who came in and decked Pogoy. 5th time. You don’t expect to do it to a team 5 times and not expect to to retaliate,"

The team management tried to pacify the players who got infuriated with Kickert's taunting, but none could restrain them during the 3rd quarter melee.

"We already told them 'huwag niyo ng pansinin (don't mind them), focus on the game,' but you know, after that when he did that in the 3rd quarter, it’s hard to restrain them anymore," added Reyes.

Netizens both from the Filipino and Australian side were "disappointed" of their respective team's actions. Even PBA players were "embarrassed" how Philippine basketball was presented to the international stage.

However, Reyes explained that the world did not know the situation of the team since their arrival on the court for the warm-ups.

"I understand the disappointment, I understand that some are embarrassed, but you don’t know what happened. You have to be in the team, you have to be in our circle to really understand what went down," said Reyes.

The Australia Boomers won the game by default, 89-53, as Baser Amer was the only player left in the roster after 9 Gilas players were ejected and June Mar Fajardo and Gabe Norwood fouled out of the game.– Rappler.com

New-look Federer breezes in Wimbledon furnace

WINNING LOOK. Switzerland's Roger Federer flashes his old form wearing a new gear. Photo by Glyn Kirk/AFP

LONDON, United Kingdom – Defending champion Roger Federer marked the start of his 20th successive Wimbledon with a new look and a comfortable 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 win over Serbia's Dusan Lajovic on Monday, July 2.

Top seed Federer marched out on Centre Court dressed for the first time in gear designed by Japanese giant Uniqlo in a deal reported to be worth $300 million after a two-decade association with Nike.

But everything else was familiar for the 36-year-old 8-time champion as the Swiss cruised past world number 57 Lajovic in just 79 minutes.

It was the second successive year that Federer had knocked out the Serb at Wimbledon.

"I'm very happy, I felt good from the start too which was nice and that was not the case last year against him. I remember I struggled early on a lot," said Federer who hardly broke sweat in Monday's 30-degree hothouse.

"It was a really nice feeling. I always got the early break in each set and was able to bring it home."

Big-name casualty

After just 20 minutes to complete the first set, Federer went on to fire 35 winners past Lajovic, breaking serve 5 times, setting up a second round encounter against either Lukas Lacko of Slovakia or French qualifier Benjamin Bonzi.

Federer was joined in the second round by the man he defeated in the 2017 final, Marin Cilic.

Third seed Cilic enjoyed a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka.

Cilic, who won the Wimbledon warm-up event at Queen's Club last month, fired 21 aces and 44 winners past his 259th-ranked opponent.

He will face either Australian qualifier Jason Kubler or Guido Pella or Argentina for a place in the last 32.

US Open champion and 4th seed Sloane Stephens became the tournament's first big-name casualty when she slumped to a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Croatia's world 55 Donna Vekic.

For Stephens, fresh from making the French Open final last month, it was her second successive first round loss at the tournament.

Vekic, who sealed the upset on her fourth match point, faces Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova or Sweden's Rebecca Peterson in the second round.

"I finally got through a match like that," Vekic told the WTA after her first win over a top 5 player.

"The last couple of times I played against top players I was playing good but I would still lose. My team always said it's going to come and it did today."

Stephens shrugged off the loss.

"There isn't too much I can do – I'm not going to go and cry. Life goes on."

Seeded 25

Later Monday, Serena Williams tackles Dutch outsider Arantxa Rus on Court One.

The American returns to the tournament for the first time since claiming a 7th title in 2016 having missed last year to give birth to her daughter.

Williams, seeded 25 this year despite a ranking of 18, has never played Rus, the world 107 who made the 3rd round in 2012 but failed to get out of qualifying on her last 3 visits.

Monday's other Centre Court matches see Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki face Varvara Lepchenko of the United States while Bulgarian 6th seed Grigor Dimitrov, a semifinalist in 2014, faces 3-time major winner Stan Wawrinka.

Also getting their campaigns under way on Monday are 5-time women's champion Venus Williams against Johanna Larsson.

Elsewhere, Sam Querrey, the American 11th seed who made the semifinals last year, saw off Australia's Jordan Thompson 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.

In the women's event, there were wins for Czech 7th seed Karolína Pliskova who defeated Britain's Harriet Dart 7-6 (7/2), 2-6, 6-1 and 10th seeded American Madison Keys, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia.

However, 2017 semifinalist Magdalena Rybarikova lost 7-5, 6-3 to Sorana Cirstea. – Rappler.com

SAMARA, Russia – Neymar scored a stylish opener and set up substitute Roberto Firmino for a late second as Brazil cruised into the quarterfinals of the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Mexico on Monday, July 2.

Bidding for a record-extending 6th title in Russia, Brazil weathered an early storm at Samara Arena before Neymar turned on the style to underline their status as favorites.

Brazil will now meet the winners of Monday's later match between Belgium and Japan, but after seeing Argentina, Spain and Portugal eliminated in the last 16, Tite's men will fancy their chances.

"We have to learn to suffer and we did suffer, it was a tough match," said Neymar. "It was a very difficult match, we knew the quality of our opponents."

Mexico made a bright start in their attempt to beat Brazil in a World Cup match for the first time.

But after dominating the first 20 minutes of an entertaining opening period, Brazil came back into the match, bossing the final stages of the half.

The match had been billed as a duel between Neymar and Javier Hernandez, but the West Ham striker was more noticeable for his platinum-dyed blond hair, a choice also made by central defender Carlos Salcedo, before being replaced in the second half.

Brazil awoke from their early slumber late in the opening half, but Neymar's angled drive was blocked by Guillermo Ochoa and striker Gabriel Jesus saw the 'keeper block his drive after a smart one-two.

After the interval Mexico lost drive and focus and Neymar broke the deadlock on 51 minutes.

The Paris Saint-Germain star drew several defenders as he ran across the edge of the area with the ball at his feet.

He laid it off for Willian and darted into the box, stretching to convert the Chelsea midfielder's superb delivery.

The Mexicans were on the ropes, but Casemiro spurned a great chance to stretch Brazil's lead, seeing his shot blocked by Ochoa.

Osorio replaced the ineffective Hernandez with Raul Jimenez on the hour and Alisson dived to tip over Carlos Vela's curling drive.

But Brazil had moved up a gear. Neymar was starting to showcase his talents but he was left writhing in pain after a tussle with second-half replacement Miguel Layun.

Replays appeared to show Layun caught Neymar on his ankle but he escaped sanction.

With 10 minutes remaining, Tite replaced Barcelona midfielder Paulinho with Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho.

Brazil secured victory when Neymar turned provider in the 88th minute, finding Firmino in the box and the Liverpool forward made no mistake. – Rappler.com

Belgium strikes back to beat Japan in epic World Cup duel

ROSTOV-ON DON, Russia – Belgium produced one of the greatest World Cup comebacks on Monday, July 2, to beat Japan 3-2 and set up an attractive-looking quarterfinal clash against Neymar's Brazil.

Substitute Nacer Chadli was Belgium's hero on a humid night in Rostov-on-Don, scoring in the 4th minute of injury time to seal the dramatic victory.

Japan had stunned Roberto Martinez's 3rd-ranked side by racing into a two-goal lead in the second half through Genki Haraguchi and Takashi Inui.

With Belgium looking to be heading home, Jan Vertonghen – the defender whose error had led to Japan's opener – made amends with a goal to put Belgium back in the game before Marouane Fellaini's powerful header brought them to 2-2.

It was goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who started the slick move that decided the match, rolling the ball out to Kevin De Bruyne, who raced upfield before feeding Thomas Meunier.

The defender's cross was intelligently dummied by Romelu Lukaku, allowing West Bromwich Albion's Chadli to slot past Japan 'keeper Eiji Kawashima.

The Japan players slumped to the turf and coach Akira Nishino said they were too stunned to talk about the match immediately afterwards.

Belgium coach Martinez expressed his pride in the players.

"In the World Cup you want to be perfect but it's about getting through, it's about winning," Martinez said.

"It was a test of character and you see the reaction of our subs coming on to win the game. It tells you everything about this group of players."

Brazil on the march

Brazil stayed on course for a 6th title as Neymar scored and created a goal for substitute Roberto Firmino to snuff out Mexico's challenge.

Neymar was criticized for his early performances in Russia as he eased his way back to fitness after a broken foot bone, but he carved open a tough Mexican defense without quite reaching his dazzling best.

After a goalless first half in the heat of Samara, the world's most expensive player tapped in from the impressive Willian's cross for his second goal of the tournament on 51 minutes.

As Brazil pressed their advantage, Neymar set up Firmino for another close-range finish that sealed the 2-0 victory.

In between, he writhed in agony on the turf after a Mexican opponent appeared to stand on his ankle, but the referee ruled there had been no foul and Neymar was soon on his feet and sprinting.

Neymar hit back at his critics afterwards.

"I don't care much for criticism, or praise, because this can influence your attitude," he said.

"In the last two matches I didn't talk to the press because I don't want to, I just have to play, help my teammates, help my team."

"I'm here to win. I can always improve. Today I feel much better and I'm very happy for this win."

Mexico threatened at times but their World Cup challenge ended at the first knockout stage for the seventh consecutive tournament.

Russian party

Russian fans celebrated long into the night after they stunned 2010 winners Spain on penalties in an electric atmosphere at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.

Veteran goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was the hero for the hosts, saving two spot-kicks.

The win sparked an outpouring of joy on the streets of the capital, with disbelieving locals cheering, waving flags, blowing horns and yelling "Russ-i-a!"

Russia, ranked a lowly 70th in the world, will play Croatia in the last eight after similar drama in Nizhny Novgorod, where Luka Modric saw his spot-kick saved late in extra time before his team held their nerve to defeat Denmark in the penalty shootout.

Spain had been considered among the favourites but their preparations were wrecked when coach Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked on the eve of the tournament.

"The KO in the last 16 is another dark chapter in our history," said Spanish sports daily Marca, adding that it was "incredible naivety" to think Lopetegui's abrupt sacking would not affect the team.

Spain join 2014 winners Germany, Argentina and European champions Portugal in exiting the competition, leaving just four former World Cup winners in the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have dominated the game for the past decade, have gone home, their hopes of ever winning the World Cup probably over. – Rappler.com

'Dark day' for Australian basketball after FIBA brawl in PH

MANILA, Philippines – Australia's top-ranked basketball official described  the infamous bench-clearing brawl between the Boomers and Gilas Pilipinas as a "dark day" for Australian basketball.

"It’s a setback for us, it’s a really dark day today and working up tonight," said Australia's basketball chief excecutive officer Anthony Moore.

Moore, who was watching the game on live TV back in Australia, called for a press conference on Tuesday, July 3 to further explain the federation's "regrets" of the incident.

"We’re on the front page of the paper today and you’re all here because of a pretty ugly incident that happened overnight. We need to work incredibly hard to repair that image," added the CEO.

After seeing the situation of their players during the brawl, the Boomers team management immediately rebooked the team's flight to Australia from Tuesday afternoon to morning. The Aussies continue to fear for their safety until they arrive back in their country.

"We saw one of our players being assaulted by a fan and we got the recording on a pack of officials prying on the boy, and we also got a fan throwing a chair on our players, so we absolutely find that unacceptable," said Moore.

"Our primary concern was the safety of our players and what insured them after."

Basketball Australia praised its team management and officials for remaining in their respective positions and actively restraining the players from clearing the bench.

"It’s actually credit to our team management and officials to actually hold back our players and that’s the result of 9 Filipinos ejected and only 4 of ours involved."

"It’s a pretty challenging time as some want to go out and support their teammates, but you know they are physically restrained from doing so because of that ejection in place."

Both Australia and Philippines will wait for the final decisions and respective sanctions of FIBA after its review of the incident, which will come in the following days.– Rappler.com

Malacañang on FIBA brawl: 'Height of being unsportsmanlike'

MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang on Tuesday, July 3, said the brawl that erupted between the Philippine and Australian teams at the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asia Qualifiers was “unfortunate” and the “height” of unsportsmanlike behavior.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made the statement when asked for Malacañang’s comment on the behavior of members of Gilas Pilipinas in Monday night’s game.

“Let’s just say we found the whole incident unfortunate. It was of course the height of being unsportsmanlike but at the same time, we appreciate that it’s something that we have to be sorry about because it should never have happened," Roque said.

"But all we’re saying is that we empathize somehow with the feelings of our fellow Filipinos, which is not to justify their conduct,” he added.

Roque said Malacañang “empathized that they (Gilas) had to act as a team” but reiterated that this did not justify their actions against certain members of the Australian team. (READ: Terence Romeo calls out Gilas critics in free-for-all)

Roque also pointed out that there should have been better officiating of the game, which would have prevented the brawl.

“Have better referees who will actually intervene when there’s a foul move made by one of the players. I’m surprised it was allowed to continue given that it was – I know it was a fast-paced game but the whistle should have been blown, and the game should have been stopped, from the very first instance that there was a foul committed,” he said.

Roque said that as soon as Australia's Daniel Kickert decked Gilas' RR Pogoy, referees should have stopped the game.

“There should have been a decision to declare it a foul act and there should have been a foul shot instead but it continued, I don’t know why it continued. We do not justify the conduct of our Filipino players. All we’re saying is, well, it was  regretful incident and it should not happen,” he said.

“In the 52 years that I’ve spent in this existence, that’s the worst I’ve seen at least here in the Philippines. We see that in other countries but really not in the Philippines,” Roque added.

The Palace spokesman said Malacañang hopes that Gilas would “graciously” accept the FIBA decision on the “regretful” incident and the corresponding sanctions. (READ: FIBA to probe Gilas, Australia after bench-clearing melee)

“I hope that our players, as true sportsmen, will honor whatever the decision of FIBA would be graciously,” he said.

During the third quarter of the game on Monday, members of the two teams traded punches and kicks after Kickert decked Pogoy. Australia won by default.

The Australian team had apologized for the incident, while some members of the Philippine team had done the same. Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes said what happened was "totally unacceptable" but also called out Kickert for provoking his players even before the game started. – Rappler.com
