MANILA, Philippines – Philippine tennis’ rising star Alexandra "Alex" Eala saw her Paris journey come to an end as she lost to Peyton Stearns of the United States in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, in round two of the 2018 Roland Garros Junior French Championships qualifiers on Friday, June 1, in Paris, France.

Despite the early exit, Eala relished the experience of playing in her first International Tennis Federation (ITF) 18-under match.

“While I lost today, I am so happy that I reached the final qualifying round at the Junior French Open Championships,” Eala posted on her Facebook account.

The 13-year-old advanced after winning her opening match against Paula Arias Manjon of Spain, 6-4, 6-4.

Last February, Eala got rewarded a wildcard slot to the tournament by ITF board member and Fédération Française de Tennis (FF Tennis) president Bernard Giudicelli, who watched Eala rule the Les Petits As in January.

While in Paris, Eala also had a chance to watch world number one Rafael Nadal in action right from the player's box of the clay king.

Eala had earlier told Rappler that the whole experience is "mind blowing."

"It is going to be my first ITF, so it's cool. Really. It's mind blowing because people work so hard to get there and I am given the opportunity," Eala said.

NEXT ROUND. PayMaya holds a superior quotient to secure its spot in the Final Four. File photo by Josh Albelda/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines –  Alyssa Valdez took charge as Creamline downed BaliPure-National University, 25-22, 25-18, 25-16, to earn an outright semifinal slot in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference on Saturday, June 2, at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Valdez unloaded 15 points built on 11 spikes and 4 service aces, while Thai Kuttika Kaewpin also chipped in 10 points to power the Cool Smashers, who cruised to their 4th straight win to stay solo on top with a 5-1 record.

The Water Defenders, composed of the core of the NU high school team, slipped to 3-3 as American reinforcement Janisa Johnson was also held to 13 points.

PayMaya had a tougher time in securing the other outright semifinal berth as a gritty PetroGazz side came out fighting before the High Flyers hacked out a 27-25, 25-23, 25-17 victory.

American Tess Rountree fired all of her 19 points off attacks to lead the High Flyers, who improved to 4-2 behind Creamline.

PayMaya held a superior quotient, thus securing the automatic Final Four spot even if it wound up tied with another team.

MANILA, Philippines – Ryan Araña brought the NBA Finals atmosphere to the PBA, not necessarily with his play but with his fashion sense.

The GlobalPort guard came to their game against the Alaska Aces on Saturday, June 2, wearing a suit shorts, mimicking idol LeBron James' getup during Game 1 of the ongoing NBA Finals. (READ: LeBron makes NBA Finals fashion fuss with suit shorts)

"Just to show some support din kasi I’m a LeBron fan talaga ever since kahit saan siya pumunta. At least, maganda rin, positive din ang nakukuha kong feedback sa social media," Araña told reporters after the game.

However, like the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar losing the Finals opener against the Golden State Warriors, Araña and the Batang Pier also suffered the same fate, surrendering a 103-109 loss to the Aces

Although admitting that he endured the scorching summer heat, the veteran said he also wants to set an example to his fellow PBA players.

"Minsan, may mga players na nakapangbahay lang pumupunta ng game. So siguro respect na lang din na magpunta tayo ng game na well-dressed para magandang tignan sa ibang fans at kagalang-galang din pagdating sa game."

(Sometimes, players come to games wearing the same clothes they wear inside the house. We have to have respect and come to games well-dressed so it will be pleasing to the eyes of the fans.)

Araña was barely a factor in the loss, going scoreless in more than two minutes of action and he had more reasons for strutting a suit.

"May kasabihan nga sila, 'If you don’t perform, japorms.'"

ON DIFFERENT SIDES. After 5 years, brothers Jeric and Jeron Teng meet again in the big stage. Photos from PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines –  After locking horns in the biggest stage of collegiate sports 5 years ago, Jeric and Jeron Teng continue their brotherly rivalry in the PBA.

The Teng brothers, who headlined the 2013 UAAP Finals pitting Jeric's UST Growling Tigers and Jeron's La Salle Green Archers, met for the first time in Asia's first play-for-pay league.

And just like the last time they squared off against each other with La Salle edging UST in a do-or-die Game 3, Jeron got the better of his older brother with his Alaska eking out a 109-103 win over Jeric's GlobalPort on Saturday, June 2.

Although he lost to Jeron again, Jeric was just glad to have shared the basketball court with his brother.

"Masaya dahil after what, mga 5 or 6 years naglaban ulit kami. Pero it's a different scenario dahil we're on different teams, different roles pero still, masaya pa rin na naglalaban tsaka one point, nagkabantayan pa kami," Jeric said.

(I'm happy because after 5 or 6 years, we faced each other again. But it's a different scenario because we're on different teams and we have different roles. But still, I'm happy and at one point, we even guarded each other.)

The older Teng was a non-factor in the loss, going scoreless in 8 minutes of action and tallying just an assist and a turnover.

Jeron, meanwhile, had a solid output of 8 points, 10 rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes of play.

With a win and a better performance to brag, Jeron had time to roast his kuya

"Syempre asar-talo na naman yan dahil sa college panalo na ako, PBA, panalo pa rin first game," Jeron said in jest.

(Of course he will be a sore loser because I've already won in college and I also beat him here in the PBA in our first game against each other.)

The two went home together in the same car and Jeric said he isn't taking the loss personally.

"Tanggap na yan, basketball lang," Jeric said.

(I already accepted it. It's just basketball.)

Sharapova desperate to end 14-year losing streak to Serena

NEMESIS. Bitter rivals Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova set up a much anticipated French Open showdown. Photos by AFP

PARIS, France – Maria Sharapova admitted on Saturday, June 2, that "numbers don't lie" as she prepared to face bitter rival Serena Williams, who she has lost to 18 times in a row, in the French Open 4th round.

Sharapova, who thrashed Karolina Pliskova in the 3rd round, will face Williams for the 22nd time in the last 16 on Monday, after the American saw off Germany's Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-4.

Serena leads her head-to-head record with Sharapova 19-2, with the Russian's last win coming at the 2004 WTA Tour Championships – even before the birth of Twitter and YouTube.

Sharapova has lost their last 7 meetings in straight sets and has managed to take only 3 sets off the 36-year-old in those 18 straight defeats.

It will the first time the two have faced off since the American's win in the 2016 Australian Open quarter-finals  – Sharapova's last match before serving a 15-month doping ban.

"Any time you play against Serena you know what you're up against," said the 31-year-old Sharapova, who beat Pliskova 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday.

"You know the challenge that is upon you. You know, despite the record that I have against her, I always look forward to coming out on the court and competing against the best player.

"I think there is a lot of things in her game that she's done much better than I have... Numbers don't lie."

Private clashes

Sharapova and Serena's rivalry is the most closely examined in the sport and not always for what happens on court.

There have been clashes over their private lives, while Sharapova claimed last year in her book that Serena "hates" her for hearing her cry after the 2004 Wimbledon final.

This will be the earliest the two have played each other in a tournament since a last-16 match at Wimbledon in 2010, with the majority of their meetings coming in finals and semi-finals.

But both are on the road back towards the top of the sport after their recent absences.

Williams had played only 4 matches since taking time off due to pregnancy before arriving at Roland Garros.

Sharapova is seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam since her suspension for using meldonium and is playing her first French Open since 2015 after being refused a wildcard by tournament organizers last year.

The Russian may feel that this is as good a time as any to play her nemesis, though, with 3-time Roland Garros winner Williams lacking playing time, while Sharapova produced her best tennis since returning to the court in dismantling former world number one Pliskova.

But for all the bad blood between the two over the years, Sharapova hinted in her book last year that reconciliation may come once the on-court battles are over.

"Serena and I should be friends; we have the same passion. But we are not. I think, to some extent, we have driven each other. Maybe that's what it takes," she wrote.

"Only when you have that intense antagonism can you find the strength to finish her off. Who knows? Some day, when all this is in our past, maybe we'll become friends." – Rappler.com

LONDON, United Kingdom – Neymar will make his first appearance for over 3 months on Sunday, June 3, as Brazil confirmed the Paris Saint-Germain striker will play in the second half of his country's friendly against Croatia.

Neymar suffered a fractured foot while playing for PSG against Marseille in Ligue 1 on February 25.

The 26-year-old had surgery in Brazil amid fears he wouldn't be fit for the World Cup.

But Neymar recovered well enough to be included in the Selecao squad for the tournament, which gets underway in Russia on June 14.

Facing a race to be fit for Brazil's World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 17Neymar will get a chance to use Sunday's clash at Anfield to show he is ready to lead the 5-time world champions in Russia.

"Neymar? He'll start on the bench because he's still recovering, and will come on at half-time because we're preparing as a team," Brazil boss Tite told reporters at a press conference on Saturday.

"I don't know yet who'll come off for him, he has to be our star player but the others have to shine as well."

Neymar scored 28 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions for PSG in an impressive first season in France following his blockbuster move from Barcelona.

BROTHERLY RIVALRY. Renaldo Balkman (right) says he considers Justin Brownlee as his 'brother.' File photos from PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines – Renaldo Balkman and Justin Brownlee will share the basketball court again, but this time, they will be on different sides.

The ultra-talented imports, who teamed up to steer Alab Pilipinas to the ASEAN Basketball League championship, headline the slugfest between the PBA's juggernauts in San Miguel Beermen and Barangay Ginebra.

Pride and a fighting chance for the playoffs is at stake as Balkman's San Miguel and Brownlee's Ginebra square off in the 2018 Commissioner's Cup today, June 3, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The two teams are both at the lower echelon of the league, with the Beermen carrying a 1-3 card and the Gin Kings holding a 1-4 record.

Although Balkman admits he considers Brownlee as his "brother," he will be all business when they meet.

"May the best man win. And I coming out there playing my game, I know he's going to play his. We're going to put on a show," said the Puerto Rican.

Brownlee, meanwhile, said it will be a little "awkward" facing Balkman, especially since it has been only a month since they last played with each other when Alab edged Mono Vampire in a winner-take-all Game 5.

"It’s got to be awkward at first [but] I got to treat him as an opponent."

"He’s an incredible player, he can definitely score the basketball, he’s a defender who can get his hands on the ball. He was the Defensive Player (of the Year) in ABL. We definitely got our hands full," added the American.

No matter what the result will be, Balkman said nothing can break the bond he and Brownlee have built together.

"Regards to what happens, he lose, I loss, whatever, we're still going to be brothers at the end of the day." – Rappler.com

STABBED. Jeron Teng got attacked just hours after playing for Alaska in the PBA.

MANILA, Philippines – PBA player Jeron Teng and his two former La Salle teammates got stabbed early morning Sunday, June 3, outside the Early Night Club at the Fort Strip in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Teng was reportedly stabbed on the body, while Thomas Torres got hit in the arm. The players were rushed to St. Luke's Medical Hospital in BGC.

The suspects were identified  as Edmar Manalo, a 40-year-old Filipino-American, Joseph Varona of  Paranaque City, and Willard Basili of Muntinlupa City. All 3 were arrested.

Just hours before the stabbing incident, Teng saw action with the Alaska Aces where he played a key role in their 109-103 win over GlobalPort in the PBA Commissioner's Cup. – Rappler.com

SUBIC, Philippines –  Nick Baldwin of Seychelles held off a tough challenge to rule the first-ever full Ironman Philippines here on Sunday, June 3.

Baldwin breasted the tape in 8 hours, 50 minutes and 13 seconds after leaving New Zealand legend Cameron Brown in the dust in the final stretch to conquer the grueling 3.8 km swim-180 km bike-42.95 km run event.

The 30-year-old Baldwin created a two-minute separation in the last 10km of the run leg after briefly going neck-and-neck with Brown, who settled for a runner-up finish in the 2018 Century Tuna Ironman Philippines.

Brown checked in 6 minutes later for an 8:56:49 clocking, while fellow Kiwi Simon Cochrane rounded out the top 3 after submitting a time of 8:58:58.

The Australians completed a podium sweep of the distaff side with Liz Blatchford winning comfortably with a time of 9:22:22.

Dimity Lee Duke crossed the finishe line 18 minutes later at 9:40:45, while Simone Maier wound up 3rd at 9:47:39.

The triathletes experienced the worst of both local weathers, as rains battered the city around 10 in the morning while searing heat smothered in turn around 3 in the afternoon.– Rappler.com

COMING TO BROTHER'S DEFENSE. Jeric Teng refused to believe the self-defense claim of Jeron Teng's attackers. File photos from Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – Jeric Teng hopes his younger brother Jeron Teng can come back the same as he was before.

The Alaska Aces rookie – who got stabbed along with former La Salle teammates Norbert Torres and Thomas Torres – suffered "deep cuts" and needed to be operated on twice at the St. Luke's Medical Center following the attack at a Bonifacio Global City club in Taguig on Sunday, June 3. (READ: Jeron Teng, 2 ex-La Salle players stabbed in BGC)

"'Yun ang kinakatakot ko, baka may lingering effect 'yung mga saksak sa kaniya. Hopefully not," Jeric told television reporters.

(That is what I'm afraid of, that his wounds would have a lingering effect that would affect his PBA career. Hopefully not.)

The older Teng said his brother is lucky that his vital organs were not damaged, but the family intends to file charges of frustrated homicide and less serious physical injuries against the suspects.

"Talaga, definitely [we'll file charges]. I believe sila Thomas [and Norbert] din," said Jeric.

(Definitely we'll file charges. I believe Thomas and Norbert will also file charges.)

According to the police report, the 3 former La Salle players "heard the suspects calling them." They confronted the suspects – identified as Edmar Lacanlae and Williard Basili – and it "resulted [in] a heated argument."

"Allegedly, the victims were punched and stabbed by the suspects using a ring knife (not recovered) that resulted [in] their injuries. The incident was pacified by the arresting officers and was able to arrest the suspects," the police report said.

The stabbing happened just hours after the Teng brothers faced off for the first time in the PBA where Jeron's Alaska defeated Jeric's GlobalPort, 109-103. (READ: Teng brothers meet in PBA for the first time)

The suspects claimed they brought out the ring knife, the weapon used in the stabbing, as self-defense. Jeric, though, refused to believe their story.

"Kapatid ko ang tagal ko nang kakilala 'yan, ni isang track record, hindi naman nakikipagaway 'yan," said the older Teng.

(I know my brother, you can see his track record and not once was he involved in a fight.)

"Talagang napagtripan sila. Minumura ata sila ganun tapos ayun napagtripan na lang. For me, why would you bring a knife, 'di ba? Kung sinasabi mong self defense, dapat bubugbugin mo na lang 'yung mukha nila."

(They just got picked on. The suspects cursed at them and they were just picked on. For me, why would you bring a knife? If you are saying that you did it for self-defense, they should have just beaten him up.)

"If you see how they are right now, it’s unbelievable. Mga bata lang to. 'Yung mga sumaksak sa kanila, may edad na," said Jeric.

MOMENTUM. BanKo-Perlas hopes to sustain its winning run in the next round.

MANILA, Philippines – BanKo-Perlas blew 4 match points in the 4th set but pulled through just the same, foiling Iriga-Navy, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 28-26, and boosting its quarterfinal bid in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Refinforced Conference on Sunday, June 3, at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

Playmaker Jem Ferrer came up with a tip dump shot that caught the Lady Oragons by surprise as the Perlas Spikers clinched the elusive point for the win, their second straight in a big finish in the elims campaign for a 3-4 card.

Through they wound up tied for 6th with the PetroGazz Angels, the Perlas Spikers had built some kind of momentum heading to the next phase.

Tacloban also enhanced its bid in the next round as it stunned defending champion Pocari-Air Force, 25-17, 17-25, 25-20, 16-25, 15-10, to finish its elims campaign at 4-3.

Jovielyn Prado defied two Pocari blockers with a power hit to end the back-and-forth duel as the Fighting Warays pushed the Lady Warriors down to joint 5th at 3-4.

BanKo-Perlas, which checked its skid with a 5-set win over PayMaya last week, looked on its way to a romp after posting a 22-18 lead on a Dzi Gervacio cross-court attack in the 4th.

But the Lady Oragons refused to give up, taking the next 3 points, aided by two BanKo-Perlas miscues, and forcing extension 4 times, the last at 26 before import Kia Bright banged in a vicious kill and Ferrer delivered the match-clinching shot that slipped through the arms of Iriga-Navy defenders.

“We wavered in our passing game in the 4th but they didn’t give up. They really wanted to win,” said BanKo coach Dong dela Cruz.

Bright topscored for BanKo-Perlas with 27 points, including 22 spikes and 4 kill blocks and one service ace, while Thai import Jutarat Montripila backed her up with 23 points.

Lauren Whyte fired 26 hits with 12 excellent digs while fellow American reinforcement added 17 markers and Cyndy Imbo finished with 6 for the Lady Oragons, who absorbed their 5th straight defeat after an opening game victory over the BaliPure Water Defenders.

Earlier, Air Force pounced on a skidding Instituto Estetico Manila and carved out a 25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22 victory to even its card at 2-2 in the men’s division of the league organized by Sports Vision and backed by Mikasa and Asics.

MANILA, Philippines – TNT claimed a share of the lead in the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup after cruising to a 117-106 win over sister team NLEX at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, June 3.

Import Joshua Smith flexed his muscles underneath with team-highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds on top of 5 assists and two blocks as the KaTropa tied Rain or Shine at the top with identical 6-1 cards.

Backstopping Smith were Anthony Semerad, who buried 6 triples en route to 22 points, Terrence Romeo, who chalked up 19 points and 8 assists, and Jayson Castro, who had an all-around outing of 10 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds.

The KaTropa enjoyed a comfortable 108-96 lead midway through the last frame but the Road Warriors wouldn't go down without a fight as Alex Mallari went on a personal 8-0 run, spiked by two triples, to make it a 4-point deficit.

However, TNT held its ground and kept NLEX scoreless in the final 3 minutes.

"We just tried doing a lot of combinations today. Jayson and Terrence playing together, Tony Semerad playing the 4 because we feel that's something we will be needing in the future," said TNT head coach Nash Racela.

Arnett Moultrie paced the Road Warriors, who badly missed the services of Kiefer Ravena, with 31 points and 14 rebounds.

Mallari chipped in 15 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds, Larry Fonacier scored 15 and Kenneth Ighalo added 11 markers in NLEX's 5th loss in 7 outings.

MANILA, Philippines – Jeron Teng is expected to miss time in the PBA as he recovers from 3 stab wounds sustained from a brawl early morning Sunday, June 3, outside the Early Night Club at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

Teng's older brother and PBA player, Jeric, said the former UAAP star along with his former La Salle teammates Thomas Torres and Norbert Torres were just picked on, which led to a brawl that triggered the stabbing incident. (READ: Jeron Teng, 2 ex-La Salle players stabbed in BGC

In a video posted by La Salle supporter Archer Pride.com (APcom) FB Page on Facebook, the former Green Archer is seen engaging in a fist fight with the two suspects identified as Edmar Lacanlae and Willard Basili.

Before the brawl began, one of the suspects shouted at Teng, "You don't f***ing know me. Who are you?" until they were separated by security personnel and Teng's girlfriend, Jeanine Tsoi.

However, as Teng flashed a middle finger, the suspects attacked the Alaska Aces rookie.

Teng, along with Thomas Torres, peppered both of the suspects' heads with punches. As security got between the two parties, the video shows Teng's back already bleeding and Torres checking the wound on his hand.

Police reported the suspects used a ring knife in the altercation.

Lacanlae and Masili were arrested by Taguig City Police while both Teng and Thomas Torres underwent operations at the St. Luke's Medical Center. (READ: Jeron Teng operated on twice, family to file frustrated homicide charges)

Rain or Shine player and former La Salle big man Norbert Torres also sustained injuries on his left arm that needed 11 stitches.

NCRPO chief Guillermo Eleazar said criminal cases of frustrated homicide and serious physical injuries will be filed against the two suspects.

The PBA, in an official statement posted on its website, offered prayers for the 3 cagers.

"The players are confined and are recuperating at a hospital in Taguig," the statement said. "Let us all pray for their speedy recovery." – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – In a game headlined by the import duel between Justin Brownlee and Renaldo Balkman, June Mar Fajardo turned out to be the biggest star.

Following relatively quiet performances in the past few games, Fajardo broke out of his shell and poured in 24 points and 19 rebounds to power the Beermen to a 104-97 overtime win over Barangay Ginebra at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, June 3.

With the Beermen trailing 91-93 down the stretch in regulation, the reigning 4-time MVP buried a jumper over Greg Slaughter with 1.1 seconds remaining to forge overtime.

Fajardo didn't do much in extra period but it was Arwind Santos who took the scoring cudgels in overtime as he drained two triples that kept the Gin Kings at bay.

Santos finished with 19 points, with 8 coming in overtime alone, while import Renaldo Balkman chalked up 27 points on top of 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks for San Miguel, which missed Christian Standhardinger's services due to a swollen knee.

After 3 straight losses, the Beermen have now won two straight games for a 2-3 card.

Ginebra, meanwhile, continues its downward spiral as it crashed to its 5th loss in 6 outings.

"Fortunately we're able to get this win and I think it could be a good morale-booster for us going to the next game namin," said San Miguel head coach Leo Austria.

"At 2-3, I think there's a possibility that we can make it to the next round. I'm happy to see the players step up."

The Beermen held a 60-52 lead in the 3rd quarter before Joe Devance caught fire and buried 3 straight triples to trim Ginebra's deficit to a whister, 61-62.

Devance drilled in another trey with less than 30 seconds left in regulation for a 92-91 lead but Ginebra failed to finish the job as Sol Mercado split his freebies that could have made it a 3-point game, paving the way for Fajardo's heroics.

Justin Brownlee filled up the stats sheet for Ginebra with 18 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 blocks and 3 steals only to get limited to just two points in the 4th quarter and overtime combined.

Japeth Aguilar had 17 points and 7 rebounds and Devance churned out 15 points in the loss.

The Scores:

San Miguel (104): Balkman 27, Fajardo 24, Santos 19, Lassiter 11, Ross 10, Cabagnot 9, Mamaril 4, Rosser 0

Ginebra (97): Brownlee 18, Aguilar 17, Devance 15, Thompson 13, Cruz 10, Slaughter 9, Mercado 8, Tenorio 7

Quarter scores: 23-20, 47-43, 71-73, 93-93, 104-97

Renaldo Balkman wins one over 'brother' Justin Brownlee

MANILA, Philippines – Nothing will break the brotherly bond built between Renaldo Balkman and Justin Brownlee.

Balkman now has one over Brownlee after the San Miguel Beermen proved steadier in the endgame to eke out a 104-97 overtime win over Barangay Ginebra on Sunday, June 3.

That, however, will not shroud the relationship they have developed after serving as anchors in Alab Pilipinas' championship campaign in the ASEAN Basketball League.

"I just told him, 'Good game.' Like I told y'all before, may the best man win. At the end of the day we won, he's still my brother. You know what I'm saying?" said the Puerto Rican reinforcement.

It was the first time the two imports locked horns in the PBA. And as expected, the duel was filled with fireworks.

Balkman put up a team-high 27 points to go with 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks while Brownlee displayed both of his offensive and defensive repertoire with 18 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 blocks and 3 steals.

Although the two put on a show, Balkman said the game was more than him and Brownlee.

"It was two guys playing hard, two guys must win. And I came out with a win. It's not just me and Brownlee, it's a team game. A lot of people were saying me versus him, I didn't see it like that," Balkman said.

"I'm a team player, I'll get my team involved. Same thing with him, I know he thinks the same way. If you don't play team basketball you'll lose."

Tite hails 'extraordinary' Neymar's golden return

LIVERPOOL, United Kingdom – Neymar proved his fitness for the World Cup with an explosive return to action that left Brazil manager Tite stunned as the superstar's superb strike inspired a 2-0 win over Croatia on Sunday, June 3.

Sidelined for 98 days after breaking a metatarsal and spraining his ankle while playing for Paris Saint-Germain in late February, Neymar had confessed to concerns about his fitness ahead of the World Cup in Russia.

But, after appearing as a half-time replacement for Fernandinho, Neymar eased his country's fears by scoring a magnificent individual goal in the 68th minute at Anfield.

Tite couldn't believe what he'd just seen from the striker in his first appearance for over 3 months.

"For the first match back I actually expected less from him! I would have been happy with a quieter performance," Tite said.

"What he did was really extraordinary. Neymar is an extraordinary individual talent but the goal he scored came from a move, a build-up, involving the whole team."

"He's aware of what they bring to him."

Tite, who has now led Brazil to 16 victories in 20 games in charge, was understandably keen to focus on his team's efforts, rather than Neymar's solo contribution.

But he knows the world's most expensive footballer is destined to steal the headlines from his side's impressive World Cup warm-up victory.

"In terms of scoring, the responsibility doesn't just fall on his shoulders," Tite said.

"He just has to keep working hard, like he is doing, working for the team and keep the team at the forefront of his mind."

Brazil have returned to train in London, where they have been using the facilities of Premier League club Tottenham, before moving on to Austria to face the hosts in Vienna in their final friendly on Sunday.

One week later, Tite leads Brazil against Switzerland in their opening group match as the Selecao start their quest for a 6th World Cup title.

They do so on the back of a solid victory against fellow World Cup qualifiers Croatia, which also featured a stoppage-time goal from Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino.

"At half-time, I said to the players, you're in a battle out there, the opposition is playing at a very high level," said Tite.

"But this is what they have to expect at the World Cup. There are going to be moments when the opponents are on top and it makes a difference if you can soak that up and show your superiority."

Global icon

The visit to the north-west of England may also prove memorable for Neymar's teammate Fred, the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder who is on the brink of a transfer to Manchester United.

Reports in Brazil suggested Fred was leaving his national squad and making the short trip to Manchester in readiness for a medical and to complete the signing for the Premier League club.

Tite declined to reveal whether that was the case, but did confirm that talks are on-going and urged United and Fred to complete the business as quickly as possible.

"Something like this speculation is inevitable when you're meeting in the summer and players are always thinking of their careers," he said.

"What we say is please resolve it as soon as possible so your head is back with us and focused on the national team.

"But if I was the manager of a club team, I would be looking to sign him."

Meanwhile, Brazil's former Liverpool forward Philippe Coutinho believes the World Cup is an opportunity for a new global icon to emerge and challenge the domination of Argentina's Lionel Messi and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Barcelona star considers Neymar and his former Liverpool colleague Mohamed Salah of Egypt the most likely candidates.

"Messi and Ronaldo have been up there on their own for so many years. I think it may be time for other players to aspire to be the best in the world," he said.

"For me, Salah and Neymar have serious chances to do that." – Rappler.com

NOT LOSING SLEEP. Batangas City Athletics coach Mac Tan (3rd to the left) is confident about his team's chances in the MPBL Datu Cup. Photo by Carla Jazmine B. Molina

MANILA, Philippines – Competition just got toughter in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), but Batangas City Athletics head coach Mac Tan said there was "no pressure" in their bid for back-to-back titles.

After besting 9 other teams for the inaugural Anta Rajah Cup, the Athletics have their work cut out for them as they battle against 25 squads for the Datu Cup championship.

Tan and his squad will not be losing sleep, though.

"No pressure naman," said Tan when asked if the team feels pressed for another title run in a press conference at the Century Park Hotel in Malate on Monday, June 4.

Nasa kondisyon na naman sila, maintain na lang.”

(They are already in condition, we just have to maintain it.)

Tan sees the Bataan Risers, San Juan Knights, Mandaluyong El Tigre and Bulacan Kuyas as the closest threats to their championship-retention campaign.

To keep up with other teams bolstering their lineups, Batangas City tapped the services of former PBA player Bong Galanza and ex-PBA DLeague cogs Sandy Señal and Lucas Tagarda.

They will add to the championship core of Val Acuña, Teytey Teodoro and Jaymo Eguilos.

“Hopefully, we will be able to be more competitive this year,” Batangas City team manager Gerre Tee said.

The Datu Cup will feature teams from Cebu, Basilan, Zamboanga, General Santos and Davao and Batangas City Congressman Mario Vittorio “Marvey” Mariño sees this as an opportunity to establish connection in Mindanao.

“Maybe sports will be our connection to Mindanao. This is our chance to bond,” he said.

The Datu Cup kicks off on June 12 at the Araneta Coliseum, with Batangas City playing its first game against the Quezon City Capitals on June 14. – Carla Jazmine B. Molina/Rappler.com

During the Philippine Superliga's battle for 3rd, Santiago mentioned that on top of the two teams she was in talks with, University of the Philippines head coach Godfrey Okumu and former F2 logisitcs consultant in the 2016 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup Championships Shun Takahashi recommended her to Japanese clubs.

"Actually sa Japan kasi may dalawang team and kung hindi man siguro ako matuloy (sa Japan) meron din si coach Okumu may gusto sila sa akin i-recommend na team and si Coach Shun [Takahashi] is inviting me doon sa Japan din so tingin ko marami akong opportunity and magandang start kung sa Japan ako maga-ano," said Santiago.

(Actually in Japan, there are two teams and if I'm not going pursue those temas, Coach Okumu recommended me to a team and Coach Shun Takahashi [invited me] to Japan, so I think I'll have a lot of opportunities and it will be a good start if I get a chance.)

RAW Deal: Philippine wrestling is more alive than ever

ACTION-PACKED. Zayden Trudeau and Jake de Leon locked horns during the PWR WRevolution X at the iAcademy in Makati City on May 20, 2018. Photo by LeAnne Jazul/Rappler

MANILA, Philippines – WWE may be the king of the world when it comes to professional wrestling, but local fans should definitely not miss out on the month-to-month growth of our local wrestling companies.

We’ve just come off a two-week stretch in which both the Philippine Wrestling Revolution (PWR) and the Manila Wrestling Federation (MWF) – the country’s active wrestling companies – put out big shows in Wrevolution X and MWF 2: Maki-Wrestling, Wag Matakot last May 20 and 27, respectively.

It’s also worth noting that Wrevolution X is PWR’s version of WrestleMania, also known as the biggest show of the year, and they pretty much went all out and justified that claim. The event was headlined with two huge co-main events, as the company’s top singles titles, the PWR and Philippine Hybrid X (PHX) Championships, were put on the line in riveting matches.

Fan favorite Ken Warren, the so-called “Social Media Sinister” won the PHX Championship, while current PWR Champion Ralph Imayabashi successfully defended his title, resulting in challenger “Ruthless” Miguel Rosales’ exit from the company. (Rosales is actually moving to Singapore, explaining the otherwise heartbreaking loss.)

That wasn’t the only thing to watch from Wrevolution X, as the card was chock-full of good, solid action from most of the PWR roster, including MWF’s own Robin Sane – proving that in its 4 years of existence in the local scene, young Filipino wrestlers have a lot of potential that fans should be tuning into.

SURPRISE. Kapitan Tutan (right) beats Robin Sane and the YOLO Twins during the PWR WRevolution X at the iAcademy in Makati City on May 20, 2018. Photo by LeAnne Jazul/Rappler

Meanwhile, MWF’s own show a week after was no slouch, either. Making their home in UP Diliman, a territory that isn’t often visited by PWR’s brand of local wrestling, the second local wrestling company established their own take on how it’s done.

Mixing a family-friendly, almost comic-book-esque aesthetic that hasn’t been fully cornered by PWR with equally awesome athletics, MWF’s rise with this well-received second show of the year shows that there’s even more potential in the local scene than we thought.

The young company’s already set the table for their very first MWF Championship in a roster-wide tournament, kicked off by a barn-burning main event between stalwarts (and local scene OGs) Robin Sane and Mr. Lucha. And to solidify the fact that the local wrestling scene is thriving, PWR characters Mr. Sy and SANDATA made an overwhelming surprise appearance in MWF’s show, with the latter facing off against “Danger” Rex Lawin in a hard-hitting bout.

SANDATA and Sy’s participation, coupled with Sane’s participation in this year’s Wrevolution X, former PWR Champion John Sebastian’s appearance at an MWF show last year, as well as Coach Gus Queens and his charge Lawin’s cameo at a PWR show last year, goes to show that the connections making up Philippine pro wrestling are getting stronger than ever.

And if you’re a wrestling fan who still hasn’t bought into the local wrestling hype for whatever reason – maybe because you find they’re not on the same level as the world-class talents of the WWE – it’s pretty foolish to expect that all these guys would be that good. They’ve all got less than 5 years of experience; it’s a young scene, and a lot of the wrestlers you see on TV have at least twice that much time under their belt to perfect their own craft.

WWE’s not always going to come around, so if you want some real live wrestling, there’s no excuse not to support homegrown talents. They put their bodies on the line living out all our dreams, of action in the squared circle.
