MANILA, Philippines – Scottie Thompson flirted with the triple-double and Barangay Ginebra topped the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 88-80, to win Game 1 of their best-of-3 quarterfinals series of the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena Monday, March 5.

Thompson scored 14 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and dished out 7 assists to help Ginebra repeat over Rain or Shine, which the Gin Kings defeated in the elimination round via a 100-92 triple overtime win last March 2.

LA Tenorio finished with 16 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, Joe Devance had 15 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds while Japeth Aguilar added 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks and two steals in the win.

Beau Belga paced the E-Painters with 17 points and 5 rebounds while Ed Daquioag chipped in 16 markers in the loss.

MANILA, Philippines – There will be no packing of bags in España as the reigning UAAP Juniors MVP CJ Cansino of the UST Tiger Cubs has decided to stay and commit with the Growling Tigers on Monday, March 5.

In a tweet by newly-appointed UST head coach Aldin Ayo, he is seen posing with Cansino inside the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion. The post has the caption “Cub -> Tiger.”

That’s all the confirmation you need, really.

The graduating Cansino has been the major driving force of the Tiger Cubs high school team this season, posting league-high averages of 24.6 points and 12.9 rebounds with an accumulated 88.4 statistical points (SPs), 18 SPs ahead of Season 80 Finals MVP Kai Sotto.

He also threaded the 7-7 Tiger Cubs through the playoff needle, besting Adamson University in a knockout match for the 4th seed and the Season 79 champion Far Eastern University in the first game of the stepladder. His UAAP Juniors career would end, however, at the hands of eventual finalist Nazareth School of National University.

While his Juniors career abruptly came to an end, his career in UST is apparently just about to begin once again. – Rappler.com

Beau Belga laments Rain or Shine's reluctance in Game 1 loss to Ginebra

NO HESITATION. Beau Belga wants the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to capitalize on the open looks Barangay Ginebra is giving them in their quarterfinals clash. Photo by PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines – There is no room for hesitation for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters now that they are on the brink of elimination in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup.

Beau Belga lamented the team's lack of decisiveness on the offensive end that led to Rain or Shine's 80-88 loss to Barangay Ginebra in Game 1 of their best-of-3 quarterfinals clash on Monday, March 5.

Rain or Shine was within striking distance early in the 4th period before the Gin Kings pulled away for good, leading by as much as 13 points, en route to drawing first blood in the series.

Admittedly a player who takes shots even when a teammate is open to receive a pass, Belga said that the E-Painters should have capitalized on their free looks from long range, especially in the payoff period.

"Parang hesitant kami tumira. Sinabi ko nga sa kanila, 'Sayang 'yung pinapraktis niyo na araw araw na shooting kung ipapasa niyo 'yung mga free shot'," said Belga.

(We were hesitant to shoot. I told them, 'You are wasting what the shooting you have been practicing everyday if you are just going to pass up the free shot'.)

"Ako naman, talagang pakialamero ako e, kapag ka may panira ako, titira ako, wala akong pakialam kung mayroon pang libreng iba."

(I admit that if I have a shot, I will shoot it. I do not care if I have an open teammate.)

In their last two games of the elimination round, Rain or Shine averaged 49 attempts from deep.

The Elasto Painters made 17 of their 46 triples in a 95-80 win over the San Miguel Beermen last February 28 and knocked down 14 of their 52 treys in a 92-100 triple overtime loss to Ginebra last March 2.

In Game 1 of the quarterfinals, Rain or Shine attempted only 33 3-pointers and made 8 of them.

"Sinabi sa amin ni coach Caloy (Garcia) na pag may libre, tira, 'wag niyong ipasa, magmiss, okay lang yan. Kung bibigyan tayo ng singkwentang 3-points next game, bakit hindi niyo itira? Hindi mo alam kung ano 'yung shushoot e," said Belga.

(Coach Caloy told us that when we are open, shoot. We should not pass it, if it misses, it is okay. If we are given 50 3-pointers next game, why should we hesitate not to shoot them? You will never know what will go in.)

However, it was not just the Elasto Painters' 3-point sniping that factored in their loss. In back-to-back losses against Ginebra, Rain or Shine surrendered a total of 28 rebounds.

Although Rain or Shine lost by just 6 rebounds in the quarterfinals compared to the 22 more boards they allowed Ginebra in the elimination round, what got the E-Painters off their game was the outstanding game of Scottie Thompson.

The 6-foot-1 guard grabbed 15 boards for Ginebra when no other player from both teams breached double-digits in rebounding.

But Belga vowed to contain the Gin Kings from crashing the glass.

"Imemake sure lang namin na next game, limited 'yung rebounding nung mga 'yun. Effort lang, hindi ito yung time na magsisisihan kami kasi nakaabot kami sa playoffs nang masaya kami, hindi kami nagtuturuan kung sino yung may mali."

(We will make sure in the next game that we will limit their rebounding. It is all about effort, it is not the time to blame one another since we reached the playoffs joyful and not pointing fingers on whose fault it is.)

Rain or Shine will try to extend the series into a decider when they face Ginebra for Game 2 on Wednesday, March 7, at the Araneta Coliseum. – Rappler.com

Ginebra's Thompson 'shockingly good' in win vs Rain or Shine, says Cone

DO-IT-ALL. Scottie Thompson does everything for Barangay Ginebra's Game 1 win over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. File photo by PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone is used to seeing Scottie Thompson rack up numbers every game day, having mentored the multi-faceted guard for more than two years now.

But on Monday, March 5, the winningest PBA tactician couldn't help but revel at how Thompson willed Ginebra to an 88-80 win over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in their best-of-3 quarterfinals clash.

Thompson was all over the floor against the Elasto Painters as he finished with 14 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists to anchor Ginebra closer to the 2018 Philippine Cup semifinals.

"I thought Scottie was phenomenal all game long, hit big shots, hit big rebounds, defended extremely well," said Cone.

Without star center Greg Slaughter, Ginebra needed someone to help its big men crash the boards. And crash the boards Thompson did.

The 6-foot-1 was the only player from both teams to reach double-figures in rebounding. He had more rebounds than fellow starters Japeth Aguilar (9) and Joe Devance (4) combined.

"He was shockingly good. I mean, he's always good, but he was shockingly good today. And he kind of epitomizes what we hope that we are as a team in terms of that hardwork and desire," said Cone.

"He epitomizes what we do and I just want to mention him because he was special tonight. He's special all the time but he was extra special tonight."

Thompson, who averaged 11.2 points, 11.2 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.7 steals in the elimination round to emerge at 7th place in the statistical points (SPs) standings with 32.3 SPs, said he just did what Cone asked of him.

In his first playoff game, Kiefer Ravena did what Kiefer Ravena does best

'IT' FACTOR. The Phenom Kiefer Ravena continues to exceed expectations in his first PBA quarters game. Photo by PBA Images

MANILA, Philippines – There are only a few things that are certain in life. The clock won’t stop moving for anyone. The government will collect your taxes. Technology will only continue to evolve. These are just some of the examples that fit that description. And like how trees extend with branches, the same concept applies to life’s lesser subplots.

Take sports in this country, for instance.

Fact: Manny Pacquiao is always going to be considered a Filipino hero (for his contributions to boxing, so let’s not get into politics).

Fact: basketball will forever be the ultimate love of the Philippines when it comes to sports.

Here’s another fact: whatever level of basketball he’s playing in, when the game is on the line, you can expect Kiefer Isaac Ravena to step up to the moment and deliver the goods.

On Monday, March 5, Ravena played his first PBA playoff game. Now, let’s say you didn’t get to watch the matchup against the Alaska Aces, and I told you he finished with 25 points and 8 assists, you’d say, “Well, yeah, you can expect that from the second overall pick in the draft. What are you yapping about over there?”

Now if I told you that a rookie, in his playoff debut, was also responsible for the 6 points that decided Game 1 against a veteran Aces team that has made multiple PBA Finals with Alex Compton, you’d pause for a second and be like, “Okay, now that’s impressive.”

Here’s what is even more outstanding about it: if you’ve been watching Ravena for years, what he did against Alaska is the norm. And somehow, he continues to exceed those already-lofty expectations, leaving us even more amazed with each clutch performance.

The heir to “Big Game” James has arrived. He wears number 15 for NLEX.

“That’s why he’s ‘The Phenom,” said Larry Fonacier, who also played a major role in the Road Warriors’ comeback. “He really lifted us and I think everyone knows that when the game is on the line, we know who to give the ball to.”

{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">KIEFER RAVENA WITH THE VISION.<br><br>He finds Miranda inside at the last second for the floater AND-1! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/WeArePBA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#WeArePBA</a> <a href="https://t.co/BLJRkAxUHP">pic.twitter.com/BLJRkAxUHP</a></p>&mdash; PBA (@pbaconnect) <a href="https://twitter.com/pbaconnect/status/970608846451322880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 5, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}

Now I want you to re-read that statement for a second. Fonacier is one of the PBA’s longest-tenured veterans. He’s been in countless of close playoff battles and has won 7 championships. He had 18 points and made the 4-point play to tie the game at 96 in crunch time. He could have easily demanded more shots down the stretch, claiming he was on fire, wanting to take his team to the finish line.

Part of why he didn’t is because of Fonacier’s unselfish nature, but it’s mostly due to Ravena’s skill and his best trait – the “it factor.”

{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"> Ravena ends NLEX’s scoring drought with a long jumper! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/WeArePBA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#WeArePBA</a> <a href="https://t.co/xHPnj4Ml7d">pic.twitter.com/xHPnj4Ml7d</a></p>&mdash; PBA (@pbaconnect) <a href="https://twitter.com/pbaconnect/status/970582658752245761?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 5, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}

That could be a number of things: his leadership, his likability, his cojones. Whatever it may be, Ravena already has “it.”

He’s always been quicker to develop that “it factor” compared to his peers. That’s why he was making history Monday night, while the closest counterpart he’s ever had to a rival, Jeron Teng, was a spectator from the bench late in the contest. Don’t get me wrong - Teng’s a La Salle legend and will be a superstar in this league, but Ravena, right now, looks on pace to become an all-time great.

“It’s nice to be part of history of the franchise,” he said after the game, in which NLEX won its first ever franchise playoff match. “But we’re not satisfied. That wasn’t the goal that we set during the start of the season.”

{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="tl" dir="ltr"> Ravena biglang prumeno, napakagat sa peke si Banchero para sa two off the glass! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/WeArePBA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#WeArePBA</a> <a href="https://t.co/Q78geG3MZN">pic.twitter.com/Q78geG3MZN</a></p>&mdash; PBA (@pbaconnect) <a href="https://twitter.com/pbaconnect/status/970606117431619584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 5, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}

The way he buried the Aces late was also very Kiefer-y. First, there was that beautiful feed to Mike Miranda that put NLEX up for good. He perfectly read Alaska’s stingy defense and made the right, unselfish basketball play. One that was advance for his age. Moments later, he outran a hell of a defender in Kevin Racal on a jump ball play and finished a difficult lay-up against two defenders to make it a two-possession lead. Then after that, he sealed the contest at the free throw line.

Here’s another crazy thought: when I looked back and reflected on Ravena’s other clutch moments throughout his career, numerous came to mind: the daggers against UST, the barrage of 3-pointers against La Salle, the classic vs UE, the clutch SEABA performances, the game-winner vs Meralco. Other basketball players only have one or two of those moments in their entire careers. For him, the list already goes on and on, and will continue to do so.

After Ravena scored that lay-up – and believe me, that highlight will be replayed for years - he flexed his muscles and roared loud enough to be heard from the stands of the Mall of Asia Arena. At that moment, Alaska was probably thinking what every other PBA team will be thinking whenever Ravena has the ball in his hands come winning time:

“Ah, crap.” – Rappler.com

Canelo Alvarez tests positive ahead of Gennady Golovkin bout

LOS ANGELES, USA – Mexican middleweight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, prepping for a May 5 title rematch with Gennady Golovkin, has tested positive for banned clenbuterol, his promoters blaming tainted meat.

A voluntary drug test showed Alvarez had trace amounts of the drug in his system and Golden Boy Promotions said in a statement on Monday the level was "consistent with meat contamination that has impacted dozens of athletes in Mexico over the last years."

"These values are all within the range of what is expected from meat contamination," Golden Boy quoted Daniel Eichner, director of the WADA-accredited SMRTL lab that conducted the tests, as saying.

{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">. <a href="https://twitter.com/Canelo?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Canelo</a> had a PED test come back for trace levels of Clenbuterol. <a href="https://t.co/cyTfKU6p0g">pic.twitter.com/cyTfKU6p0g</a></p>&mdash; Kevin Iole (@KevinI) <a href="https://twitter.com/KevinI/status/970767086946418688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 5, 2018</a></blockquote>

The promotion company headed by Mexican ring great Oscar de la Hoya said it had notified the Nevada State Athletic Commission and Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler.

"We're waiting to get a ruling from the Nevada commission," Loeffler told AFP.

"Whenever you have a positive test, it's never a good thing. But we'll wait until we get the information. As of now, nothing has changed from our side. Gennady is still training and hoping that the fight continues, but we'll leave it up to the commission."

Undefeated Golovkin and Alvarez fought to a split draw in a September 16 thriller that ended amid some controversy.

While one judge scored the fight for Golovkin and one had it even, there was widespread astonishment at the card of judge Adalaide Byrd, who marked it 118-110 in favor of Alvarez.

"This is a fight that Gennady has wanted," Loeffler said. "He was begging Canelo for the first fight and naturally wanted the second fight after the controversy with the judges in the first.

"He's certainly not looking to get out of this fight for any reason. But at the same time, there's a reason why testing is in place. But we just have to wait for the results and see how that shakes out."

Golden Boy said Alvarez will immediately move his training camp from Mexico to the United States "and will submit to any number and variety of additional tests" deemed necessary in the build up to the May bout.

Alvarez said the positive result "surprises and bothers me".

"I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail," he said.

Tainted meat has been blamed before for positive clenbuterol tests in Mexico, where it is sometimes used to fatten cattle.

The World Anti-Doping Agency warned athletes at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara to be careful about what they ate during the event.

FIFA, world football's governing body, concluded that contaminated meat resulted in positive tests of 109 players at the Under-17 World Cup in Mexico that year, when five members of Mexico's national team also tested positive.– Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippies – The Marinerong Pilipino Skippers braved rough seas and came away with an 86-80 comeback victory over fellow contender Go for Gold-CSB in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Pasig City Sports Center, Tuesday, March 6.

Stellar teamwork was on display for the two contenders early in the first quarter. While CSB climbed to an early 12-point lead, 17-5, the Skippers and their loyal fans rocked back with an 18-3 run to take a 3-point lead at the last second, 23-20, off a corner triple from Kyle Toth.

Go for Gold gave a repeat performance of their first quarter with another crowd-silencing 17-5 run, 37-28, ending with a thunderous Justin Gutang dunk, who flexed right in front of the stunned Marinero supporters. Alvin Pasaol helped cut the lead to 5, 32-37, but got too hyped and stuck his tongue out in the face of Jayjay Alejandro – good enough for a technical foul. At the half, CSB held its ground and led by 6, 43-37.

At the start of the third, Gutang extended the CSB lead back to 10, 47-37. However, the tandem of Rian Ayonayon and Billy Ray Robles combined with the earsplitting support of the Marinero fan base opened the floodgates for a 10-2 run, 47-49. A few possessions later, the Skippers finally regained the lead since 23-20 in the first quarter after a pull-up trey from UST guard Renzo Subido, 55-54. Not to be outdone by his UAAP foe, Alejandro pulled up his own trey after an Edward Dixon bucket to give back CSB a 4-point lead, 59-55. Go for Gold again held steady and maintained this lead until the end of the frame, 66-62.

The Skippers’ momentum and noise levels reached a tipping point in the final frame, after the Ayonayon-Robles tandem once again combined for a lead-taking 10-3 run, 79-73. Ayonayon would continue to dominate on both ends, forcefully yanking the ball from Alejandro and coasted for an easy drive. With about a minute and a half remaining in regulation, Ayonayon pulled up from mid-range and sank the jumper for the 84-77 lead. He would then hustle back on the other end and hit Yankee Haruna with the game-sealing rejection.

Robles made up big time for a 2-point first half by ending with a game-high 18 points. Subido added 16 markers of his own. Ayonayon only scored 9 but he got 4 points, a steal and one of his two blocks in the last two minutes. On the other end, fan favorite veteran Jerwin Gaco had himself a game with a team-high 16 points – 8 coming in the fourth. Matt Salem came through with 14 points, but only hit 3/10 from beyond the arc in the losing effort.

In the other game of the double-header, the Che’lu-SSC Revellers handled the Gamboa-St. Clare Coffee Lovers, 79-73.

Fajardo scored a game-high 35 points, hauled down 11 rebounds and swatted two shots while Santos scored 10 of his 15 points in the payoff period to help San Miguel, which had a twice-to-beat advantage, finish the quarterfinals series in one game.

The game was tied at 79-all in the 4th period before the Beermen found their touch from 3-point land with Brian Heruela burying a triple and Santos knocking down back-to-back treys for an 88-83 lead.

TNT narrowed the gap to two points after an Anthony Semerad layup, 88-90, but San Miguel answered with back-to-back Santos and Fajardo buckets, 94-80.

San Miguel scored a 6-0 within the last two minutes to put the nail in the coffin.

Santos, who was ejected with 1:20 minutes left in the game after receiving his second technical foul, also finished with 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 4 blocks.

Marcio Lassiter added 20 points, 5 rebounds, two assists and two steals and Chris Ross chipped in 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals in the win.

"Talagang nagpapasalamat ako dahil ngayon, this is the hardest game we ever had against Talk N Text dahil they've been in two knockout games and then lahat tinambakan nila," said San Miguel head coach Leo Austraia.

(I am really thankful since this is the hardest game we ever had against Talk 'N Text because in the two knockout games they have been in, they pulled off lopsided wins.)

"But I have to give credit to the boys, especially to June Mar Fajardo. He was so focused in this game and the players, Arwind, all of them."

Jayson Castro had 19 points and 8 assists for the KaTropa while Troy Rosario added 19 points and 7 rebounds.

Roger Pogoy, Semerad and Kelly Williams chalked up 17, 16 and 15 points, respectively, in the loss.

MALOLOS CITY, Philippines –  Lindsay Stalzer dug deep into her well of experience to power Petron Blaze to a 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Generika-Ayala Tuesday, March 6 in the Chooks to Go-Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.

Playing in her fifth season, Stalzer sparked a fiery uprising in the crucial stretch of the third set to tow the Blaze Spikers to another impressive victory in this prestigious club tourney bankrolled by Isuzu, Rebisco and UCPB Gen with ESPN5 as official broadcast partner.

With the win, the Blaze Spikers tightened their hold at the lead with 5-0 win-loss card, while the Lifesavers remained winless in three starts in this league that also has Asics, Mikasa, Senoh, Grand Sport and LGR as technical sponsors.

The 32-year old Stalzer, the former Bradley University star who led Foton to a pair of PSL crowns in 2014 and 2015, registered all of her 20 points from the attack zone while her spiking partner in fellow American Hillary Hurley chipped in 11 kills, two aces and a block for 14 points.

Petron controlled the spiking department, 46-31, and had more blocks, 5-3, in this match that drew a good-sized crowd and lasted for 79 minutes.

“We fought back from being down and I’m very happy with the composure our team got today,” said Stalzer, the former Most Valuable Player awardee.

After dominating the first two sets, Petron found itself in trouble as Generika-Ayala entered the first technical timeout with a wide lead, 8-2.

The Blaze Spikers refused to quit as they pounded hard on the Lifesavers’ erratic reception and a couple of unforced errors to knot the count at 16 in the second technical timeout.

Then, Stalzer took over.

The Illinois-native shattered an 18-all deadlock with three sharp smashes to capture a 22-18 advantage.

Remy Pala joined the scoring parade with a running hit from the right wing followed by a block kill to rip the game wide-open, 23-19.

Symone Hayden nailed 14 points while Darlene Ramdin and Angeli Araneta contributed 10 markers apiece for the Lifesavers, who are still in their quest for their first win under the mentorship of Sherwin Meneses and Parley Tupaz. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel head coach Leo Austria held back tears after his Beermen advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup following a 106-93 win over the TNT KaTropa Tuesday, March 7.

Austria, during the post-game presser, turned emotional as he shared that his wife underwent a kidney transplant the night before.

"I never had sleep last night because of my wife," said the teary-eyed Austria. "She undergone (sic) a kidney transplant but thank you Lord, very successful operation for her."

It was a double victory for Austria with the Beermen, who held a twice-to-beat advantage, needing only one game to dispatch the pesky KaTropa and his wife now on her way to recovery.

"I never had a problem for so long, but this time I'm so thankful to God dahil binigyan niya pa ako ng panalo. The players really played well. And wala na akong masasabi dahil God is always in our side," said Austria.

The 5-time PBA champion said he was wary of the KaTropa heading into the clash, especially since TNT averaged a point differential of +23.5 points in its last two games to stay alive in playoff contention.

Fortunately, June Mar Fajardo and Co. came to Austria's rescue. Fajardo had a monster double-double of 35 points and 11 rebounds while 3 other Beermen finished in double figures.

"We followed our game plan to the letter and that's the result. Thank you, San Miguel, especially [to] my players for giving this win. Thank you."

San Miguel will have a few days to refresh as they wait for the winner of the Barangay Ginebra-Rain or Shine quarterfinals series in the best-of-7 semifinals clash. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Magnolia Hotshots overcame a lethargic start to turn back the GlobalPort Batang Pier, 86-79, and clinch the second semifinals seat in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena Tuesday, March 6.

Magnolia got buried by as much as 20 points in the maiden period, 6-26, before turning the tide in the middle period, taking a 61-59 lead heading in the 4th quarter.

The Hotshots then used a 17-7 salvo, highlighted by 3 straight Mark Barroca buckets and capped by a Justin Melton triple, to lead 78-66 with 4:55 minutes remaining.

GlobalPort trimmed the deficit to just 4 points, 78-82, thanks to a 12-4 blitz but couldn't complete the comeback after Terrence Romeo turned the ball over with 30 seconds remaining.

Barroca starred for the Hotshots with 16 points, 3 assists, two rebounds and two steals while Paul Lee finished with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Ian Sangalang and Marc Pingris combined for 24 points and 17 boards in the win.

Stanley Pringle did most of the heavy lifting for the Batang Pier with 31 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists against 6 turnovers.

Pacquiao eyes next fight in Malaysia in May or June

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine boxing idol Manny Pacquiao said his next opponent would be either world champion Lucas Matthysse or Danny Garcia in Malaysia in May or June, after rejecting an undercard offer to face Mike Alvarado.

Pacquiao told ABS-CBN television in an interview aired Tuesday that his camp had narrowed the choices down to World Boxing Association welterweight champion Matthysse, of Argentina, or the American former WBA super-welterweight and World Boxing Council welterweight champ Garcia, who was unbeaten until last year.

"Definitely, Malaysia is where we will fight. If not May, this coming June, maybe third week of June, so the preparation will not conflict with my work," said Pacquiao, who is also a senator.

Last week Pacquiao, 39, rejected an offer to fight on the undercard of the Jeff Horn-Terence Crawford fight in the US in April.

Pacquiao, who has won world titles in an unprecedented eight weight divisions, previously said he was eyeing an April date with Ukraine's World Boxing Organization superfeatherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko during a break from his senatorial duties.

Asked why he would fight in Malaysia, Pacquiao said "because those in Malaysia appealed to also have a fight there".

Pacquiao is a national hero in the Philippines but there have been growing questions about whether the ageing boxer can still command the mammoth paydays that his fights used to earn.

He lost his WBO welterweight title to the Australian Horn last year to leave his record standing at 59 wins, seven losses and two draws, and is now in the twilight of his career.

(READ: Pacquiao-Horn rematch off due to scheduling conflict – report)

The Filipino southpaw retired briefly in 2016 but made a comeback to retake his WBO title from Jessie Vargas just months later. He has not scored a knockout win in the past eight years.

In January, Pacquiao rejected calls to retire for good, adding he did not believe his recent losses tarnished his record.

He parlayed his sporting fame to get elected to the influential Senate in 2016 and has had to juggle his training and matches with his legislative schedule. – Rappler.com

Smart Breakdown Basketball Invitationals holds inaugural national championships

MANILA, Philippines – The Smart Breakdown Basketball Invitationals (BBi) will gather regional champion teams of National Capital Region (NCR), Bulacan, Cagayan de Oro, Cavite, Davao and Iloilo to hold its first ever national championships on March 13 to 18, 2018.

The opening ceremonies and games will take place on Tuesday, March 13 at the Blue Eagle Gym, while the succeeding games will be held at the Fr. Cortina, S.J. Gym in Xavier School.

The schedules and participating teams are as follows:

BBi is one of the fastest growing basketball leagues. The tournament started from 16 teams with only two divisions and now has 54 teams competing in across 5 divisions – 10-Under, 12-Under, 14-Under, 17-Under in the boys' division and the 25-Under for women.

Leading up towards the national tournament, BBi holds 3 conferences in a year: one in the summer, a regional contest until October and national championship qualifiers from Novermber until February.

This year, only the winners in the 12-Under and 17-Under age groups will take part in the national championships.

The University of Visayas and Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu were supposed to send teams for the 17-Under and 12-Under divisions, respectively. However, the national championships coincides with the schools' graduation rites.

BBi's expansion to the different regions of the Philippines has blessed many players from the smaller schools with an opportunity to not only play basketball in Metro Manila, but to study in NCR as well.

The players whose schools cannot afford to raise a basketball team eventually join club teams, which are also welcomed by BBi through the regional contests held. The young players, especially those from the provinces, are propeled to the forefront of scouters and recruiters based in Metro Manila.

"The reason why we welcome these clubs is that these are the boys whose families are probably not able to afford schools so they join these clubs," said managing partner Jay Adevoso.

"It's natural naman eh that when you have all these teams here. Siyempre nakikita ng coach, di naman maiiwasan na kakausapin (Of course the coach sees them and they can't resist talking to them), but really for us as part of the course [and]  more importantly we are helping with the improvement of all these boys.

According to Adevoso, there were players who were able to earn scholarships to schools in Metro Manila like Ateneo de Manila High School due to basketball and even seek international opportunities in Thailand as a result of joining BBi.

For Cavite representative Andrew Villarete, his experience in the Lion's Cup has taught him that players from the smaller schools never had the chance to play in Metro Manila until BBi came along and noticed them.

"They never had a chance until the blessing of Breakdown Basketball will be bringing them here, so that they can play in front of the scouts and the coaches and the big schools will see them," said Villarete.

Xavier School's basketball program head John Edwin Sy also agreed that BBi is a "big boost" to the Philippines' grassroots development for basketball.

"It is a big boost to the grassroots development of basketball. It's a good way of giving back not only do the Metro Manila teams but to the rest of the provinces in the Philippines," said Sy.

Despite one of best grassroots basketball programs in Manila, Xavier School will be able to gain exposure by competing against other schools outside NCR through the national championships.

"We’re very exposed to the Metro Manila schools, but competing against the other schools in the provinces is a very good experience for our boys. The kids are very excited. I felt that they wanted to win," explained Sy.

Aside from holding different age group divisions for boys, BBi will also hold a 25-Under summer contest for men's, where the University of the Philippines, National University, Ateneo de Manila University, St. Claire, Colegio de San Juan de Letran and Far Eastern University have confirmed to join.

BBi has also been actively supporting women's basketball as the 25-Under women's tournament was first held in February 2018. The Filoil Flying V Preseason League discontinued its women's basketball tournament, making BBi the only league that offers opportunities for women's basketball in the Philippines outside the UAAP and NCAA.

There will be a chance that the BBi will also host its first ever women's basketball national championship in May 2018 in Davao City. – Rappler.com

WGM. Filipina Janelle Mae Frayna is poised to win her first tournament since becoming the country's first woman grandmaster. From her Facebook account

MANILA, Philippines – Woman grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna of the Philippines is poised to win a tournament as she is tied for the lead with 3 others and with a high tiebreak score in the First Friday Masters at the Institute for Chess Excellence in Selangor, Malaysia.

After 8 rounds on Tuesday, March 6, Frayna, fellow woman grandmaster Tokhirjonova Gulrukhbegim of Uzbekistan, Wynn Zaw Htun of Myanmar and Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam were all tied with identical 5.5 points.

Frayna defeated MG Gahan of India, as she had the white pieces, in 23 moves of a Grunfeld Defense in round 7. When Gahan surrendered, there were no queens but her king was hemmed in at the edge of her kingside by Frayna's pawn.

In round 8 in the afternoon, Frayna had the white pieces again but she settled for draw against the Uzbekistan lady grandmaster in 14 moves of a Ruy Lopez. The Filipina was about to repeat the same position for the 3rd time when the draw was made.

Frayna was threatening to remove the only piece quarding Gahan's position, a white-squared bishop, and then with Nf7 ch force a mating attack or win of material.

The only thing that will spoil Frayna's first tournament win since becoming the Philippines' first woman grandmaster is if she will lose the last round Wednesday, March 7, while her other foes win.

Frayna has the black pieces against Patil Mitali Madhukar, a woman Fide Master from India. The Uzbekistan lady grandmaster, Wynn and Van Huy have the white pieces.– Rappler.com

Can Marikina become a football mecca?

MANILA, Philippines – The Marikina Sports Center is certainly a unique venue. Not only are the stands painted with different pastel shades, but there is a Romanesque arch on one end, and Grecian statues of athletes on pedestals ring the track.

I'm here for opening day of the 2nd Philippines Football League season, to see if the home side, JPV Marikina can take on the might of Global Cebu. But it's no ordinary home game. Not only is it the first match of the season, but it's the first ever JPV Marikina match on their own pitch. All last season, JPV played their “home” games in other venues, usually Rizal Memorial or in Biñan.

“As MSC is a multipurpose stadium, maintaining the condition of the pitch was definitely one of our biggest challenges,” explains Leona Yap of JPV.

Only a week before the venue got the thumbs up from the league to finally host a game.

The pitch is ragged, a moonscape of patchy grass and dirt. But as rough as it is, it's still vastly better than what it used to be, says the team. Kyo Nagami, the team's Japanese CEO, says a grass cutter was brought in and the club also paid for fertilizer to get grass to flourish on the previously bare ground. A bicycle track that ringed the field was also removed, and now the playing surface is 64 meters wide, the minimum for most top leagues.

UNIQUE. Greco athletes tower over pitch, where JPV Marikina hosted Global Cebu in the opener of the Philippines Football League. It was the first home game of Marikina in a pitch that is truly their home. Photo by Bob Guerrero

“It took months to fix and grow the grass. It's not yet 100% perfect but it's playable,” says Warren Reyes Sira, who works with the City government in the maintenance of the facility.

“The fact that the field is a multi-use facility, we can't avoid the field getting damaged from some activities. The facility is well maintained so preparations and fixing for other requirements were minimal,” adds Sira.

The coaching staff helped spruce up the field, including goalie coach Joel Villarino. Coach Joel and I have a laugh before the game reminiscing the time when we were last in Marikina together.

It was 2005, and the stadium was host to the SEA Games women's football competition. We watched the Pinays take on Myanmar. One of our friends, Celine Lopez, a former Ateneo and Women's futsal national team player, had smuggled in a Coleman of alcoholic brew. National team player Jimmy Dona was caught drinking it during the game, and was hauled off to the nearby police station, where Villarino, his fellow Navy enlisted man, had to convince the cops to set him free.

I bumped into Global's Spanish striker Rufo Sanchez and the memories come flooding back of the last time he played in Marikina. It was a UFL Cup game in 2012 when Sanchez was still with Stallion. His five goals resulted in a rout of second-tier Sta. Lucia, 6-1.

Sadly, Sanchez does not take part in the game against JPV and is unable to add to his Marikina goal haul.

One person excited for the game is Tetel Siasoco. The former Miriam varsity player has lived all her life in nearby Barangay Malanday. She has been volunteering for Marikina football for as long as anyone can remember, coordinating open plays on the pitch and helping out with youth soccer, like with the free youth sports clinics in 13 different sports that are offered in the summer.

She can barely contain her excitement for club football in the Shoe Capital of the Philippines.

“Now that we have a home base to play in, our fans know that we have a stronghold to protect, and Marikeños are known for their pride, and passion,” says Siasoco,

“We are excited to have them come out to our fortress here, at Marikina Sports Center, to cheer their squad. Basta dito sa Marikina, JPV lang ang bida, manalo o matalo, buo ang suporta namin sa kanila.”

(Here in Marikina, JPV are our heroes. Win or lose, we pledge our total support to them.)

“I think that the support has always been there in the sense that Marikina sports center has always been a symbol of sport in this city.” continues Siasoco.

“When you mention sport to Marikeños, this place is the first thing that comes to mind. Now that we have chance to compete with the rest of the country, I think opposing teams will know right away that they aren't only entering hallowed ground, but are playing in a place already rich in history, even before the first kickoff takes place.”

The MSC contains facilities for many sports, including tennis, basketball, swimming, and martial arts. The track is open to the public on most nights, and hordes of Marikina residents pay P5 to walk or run there every night. Thanks to these earnings, the facility, opened in 1969, is clean and well-maintained.

It appears unlikely that the field will ever get converted into an artificial pitch. The floodwaters from Typhoon Ondoy in 2009 rose up above the goal frames, according to Siasoco. See the flooding here.

A similar deluge would wash away the rubber infill of any artificial turf, and would be costly to replace.

Marikina is no Barotac Nuevo, but football does play a part here. While there are no native Marikeños in the roster, midfielder Boyet Cañedo and assistant coach Frank Muescan have coached here in the past.

Both of Kaya FC's young goalies, Zach Banzon and Ace Villanueva, are Marikeños, so when Kaya comes to visit, it should be emotional.

The club continues to create a bond with the community. They will partner with a local Boys Town to spread youth football. JPV also intends to pitch in with the city's football clinics over the summer.

At precisely 7 pm the match kicks off. I take my seat beside an old officemate, Jerry Hizon, who lives in Barangay Sta Elena, barely a kilometer away. When we worked in the same ad agency and either the World Cup or Euros was being played, he showed up to work bleary eyed from watching matches in the wee hours. Now he has his own hometown team to cheer for.

We are seated in the West Stand, and have been told that the East Stand is closed for spectators. It's unfortunate because the East Stand is closer to the pitch. The West has basketball and tennis courts in between it and the track. I hope in future games they open up the East.

WEST STAND VIEW. The Marikina Sports Center welcomed Global Cebu. Photo by Bob Guerrero

The game is scrappy thanks to the uneven turf. Dust is kicked up into the air at every movement of the players. But that doesn't stop Keigo Moriyasu, the club's new Japanese attacking player, from volleying in brilliantly from long range for the opener after 25 minutes. That causes a decent crowd of a few hundred to erupt in glee. Admission is free but the turnout is impressive considering the fact that the match was only announced a few days before.

At halftime I chat with Lazarus Xavier, the PFL CEO, who is delighted with the match atmosphere and the stadium.

“There is lots of activity around the stadium,” says the Malaysian. “If they promote their club well this could be a really good venue.”

Xavier is referring to the numerous business and government establishments that surround the stadium. It literally is in the heart of Marikina. Plus the West Stand entrance is on Shoe Avenue, where jeepneys pass. Getting to a match in the MSC is not difficult at all.

HOME WIN. The Marikina open the new PFL season with a win in the new home. Photo by Bob Guerrero

In the second half the Marikeños double their lead with a smooth finish from Ryuki Kozawa, another Japanese import. It is said that JPV, descended from a team formerly known as Manila All-Japan, stands for “Japan-Philippines Volt-in,” and all four of the foreign players are Japanese. Some of the overseas-born players are also of mixed Filipino-Japanese heritage, like Allen Angeles.

Global pulls one back late with a sensational free kick from Dominic Del Rosario. But it's not enough to prevent the home side from inaugurating their home with a 2-1 win.

At the final whistle the boisterous crowd breaks into an “Ole, ole ole ole” cheer as the players take a bow.

Pun intended, football has taken a foothold in the Shoe Capital of the Philippines. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archer Ricci Rivero released his formal statement and a copy of his drug test results on his Twitter account on Wednesday, March 7.

Contrary to speculations of him being on leave from the team due to drug abuse, Rivero's published drug test results revealed that he was tested negative.

"I am NEGATIVE to all types of substance contrary to initial report that I was tested positive for drugs," read the statement.

The small forward voluntarily subjected himself to a hair follicle test on January 20, 2018. The results dated on February 9, 2018 covered a period of 90 days before he took the test.

"To everyone who judged me and are doubting me – you can verify the authenticity of this to satisfy your dismay. For the record – I never took drugs and will never try it," claimed Rivero.

Rivero also denied that he is accepted money from gay benefactors according to rumors.

"As for the lewed (sic) rumor – please do not disrespect the hard work of my parents to provide for me and my siblings. We are all working hard to help each other sustain a big family like ours. Me, simply accepting money is an insult – it is foul."

Rivero also explained that he took a leave of absence to "honor his commitments and respect the new team rules" and not about "choosing priorities and greed." (READ: Rivero brothers, Brent Paraiso 'to go on leave' from DLSU Green Archers)

"My leave of absence is not about choosing priorities and greed, but it is about honoring my commitments and respecting the new team rules that was just implemented. I can't just turn my back like that. It's a value that I have to adhere. I never wanted to choose, but I was left with no choice."

Rivero, his brother Prince and Brent Paraiso are still enrolled in DLSU. The Green Archers resumed practice last January 16, but sources have told Rappler that they haven't been back since. (READ: After 2 months of turbulence, Green Archers finally have positive outlook)

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao confirms in an ambush interview on Wednesday, March 7, that his next fight will be on June 24, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

According to Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 knockouts), there is greater possibility that his opponent will be World Boxing Association (WBA) (regular) welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (39-4, 38 KOs), who earned his title in January 2018. The Argentine was previously the World Boxing Council (WBC) interim super lightweight title holder from 2012 to 2013.

Pacquiao's other choice was American former WBA super-welterweight and World Boxing Council welterweight champ Danny Garcia (34-1, 20 KOs), who was unbeaten until last year.

Pacman was eyeing his match to happen in May, but due to the conflict with his Senate duties, he decided to extend it to June 2018.

"Supposedly May pero sabi ko may trabaho pa ako dito so ang ginawa ko inextend ko ng June so by June siya," said Pacquiao.

(Supposedly May but I said that I still have work here so I extended it to June or it will happen by June.)

The senator is confident that he will have enough time to train, while fulfilling his legislative responsibilities.

"Training, trabaho nagagawa naman natin yun, saka break naman nun.

(Training, work, we're able to do that anyway, and it's the break.)

Last week, Pacquiao rejected an offer to fight on the undercard of the Jeff Horn-Terence Crawford fight in the US in April.

Pacquiao has not scored a knockout win in the last 8 years and lost his WBO welterweight title to Australian Horn via an unanimous decision in July 2017.

The ageing boxer is adamant in continuing his boxing career while being a senator despite advices for him to retire for good based on his performance against Horn. (READ: Roach to talk to Pacquiao about retirement after Horn loss– Rappler.com/ with reports from Camille Elemia
