MANILA. Philippines – Pressure is on Global-Cebu FC in its upcoming home game against Indonesia's Bali United on Tuesday, February 27 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Global suffered a heavy 0-1 opening game loss against FLC Thanh Hoa last February 10 in Vietnam. Pape Omar Faye's 74th minute goal proved to be the game-winner as the Filipino team was afflicted with loose defending and lackluster offense.

"Our problem in the last game, (a 1-0 loss to Thanh Hoa,) was loose marking in the back. We will learn from that and we hope that doesn't happen again. We didn't have that many attempts but we are addressing that. We have to improve our attempts on target," said Global-Cebu head coach Marjo Allado.

The match on Tuesday becomes a "must-win" for both Global-Cebu and Bali United, especially in their race to their first 3 points. Both teams are on an even ground as the Indonesian team previously lost to Yangon United 3-1.

"We're going to do whatever we can to get those 3 points because football is all about results," said Allado.

Despite this year being Bali's first appearance in the AFC Cup, the Indonesian team also made a cap in the 2018 AFC Champions League where they won the preliminary round 1 against Singapore's Tampines Rovers, 3-1. The failed to advance to round 3 when they lost, 1-2, to Thai team Chiangrai United.

With this feat, Global-Cebu does not plan on underestimating them in Tuesday's game.

"We watched Bali versus Yangon. They are very good with 70% of the possession, but they have weaknesses that we will try to exploit," said Allado.

"They (Bali) lost versus Yangon but that is not a definitive conclusion of their strength," added team captain and goalkeeper Patrick Deyto.

Global-Cebu is still at its rebuidling stages with their new signings Jordan Jarvis, Curt Dizon, Daniel Gadia, Jinggoy Valmayor and Ian Lee who are looking to replace their key losses Misagh Bahadoran, Dennis Villanueva and Amani Aguilnaldo.

"We lost some good players from last season but management did a decent job of replacing them. We had a good preseason. The new players are hungry to prove themselves. In our last game we fought hard but we're unlucky. We needed to create more chances," said Deyto.– Rappler.com

Aris Dionisio powers Gamboa in comeback win over Perpetual

MANILA, Philippines – The Gamboa-St. Clare Coffee Lovers earned a much-needed win over the University of Perpetual Help Altas, 78-73, in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the JCSGO Gym, Monday, February 26.

Aris Dionisio was stellar on both ends of the court, tallying a game-high 21 points, 6 blocks and 4 steals to go along with 11 fourth quarter points. He was the driving force behind Gamboa’s 24-8 run in the final 7 minutes of the game which Perpetual dominated for the first three quarters.

The Altas made it clear who would control the game early in the first frame, where Prince Eze threw down two poster dunks and Rey Villanueva scored 10 in an 18-2 run for an 11-point lead, 21-10. Perpetual used this momentum to answer back everything Gamboa put up in the scoreboard as they entered halftime with a 41-31 lead.

However, early in the third, the Coffee Lovers gave a precursor of things to come later on as they went on a 10-3 run, including a Mohammad Pare putback jam, to close the gap at 3, 41-44. But Edgar Charcos singlehandedly nullified that effort with a 7-0 run to put Perpetual back up 10, 51-41.

With the Altas still leading 63-54, Dionisio and Chris Bitoon cranked up the intensity for Gamboa that started their game-clinching run. Soon enough, the Altas succumbed to Dionisio’s multiple defensive stops combined with the increasing jeers of the Coffee Lovers’ bench. Their late-game efforts were finally realized when Bitoon sank a go-ahead and-one bucket in the final 3 minutes of regulation. As a final nail in the coffin, Dionisio followed this up with an and-one of his own and an alley-oop off a Raffy Rebugio lob to run away with the comeback win.

After the game, head coach Jinino Manansala was all smiles as he lauded his guys’ two-way efforts.

Every pick-and-roll, may switch kami,” he said, referring to his team’s late run. “Doon sila nataranta eh. Ang dami naming steals down the stretch, so nakuha namin ‘yung panalo.”

(We have a switch on every pick-and-roll. That’s where [Perpetual] panicked. We had a lot of steals down the stretch, so we got the win.)

Sabi ko rin sa mga players ko, ‘yung small things muna ‘yung unahin namin,” he added. “’Tsaka ‘yung respeto, makukuha rin namin ‘yan. Sabi ko, one game at a time.”

(I also told my players that we should prioritize the small things first. We’d gain the respect eventually. I told them, one game at a time.)

Aside from Dionisio’s all-around statline gem, Pare also anchored the Gamboa defense with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds with 3 steals.

Travis Jackson had 11 markers with 5 boards and 2 steals while Bitoon had 10 points with 6 coming in the payoff period.

For the Altas, Rey Peralta registered a team-high 17 points while Peralta followed him up with 13. Three other players scored in double-digits for Perpetual in the losing effort, namely Charcos (12), Eze (11) and Kim Aurin (11).

In the second game, the Wangs-Letran Couriers blew out the JRU Heavy Bombers, 73-55.

The Scores:

Gamboa-St. Clare (78): Dionisio 21, Pare 16, Jackson 11, Bitoon 10, Ambuludto 7, Rebugio 6, Hallare 5, Acuno 2, Alcober 0, Rubio 0, Fontanilla 0

MANILA, Philippines – This early Kiefer Ravena is already an integral part of Gilas Pilipinas and Jayson Castro believes the 24-year-old will take over the starting point guard reins for the national team in the future.

Ravena led the bench mob in Gilas' 89-84 win over Japan Sunday, February 25, as he logged in 13 points, 5 assists, two rebounds and two steals. He also recorded an efficiency rating of plus-minus +19 in 26 minutes of action.

"The Phenom" provided the spark off the bench Gilas badly needed, scoring 8 points in the first quarter to help the squad overcome an early 16-point deficit.

While Castro is still Gilas' first option at the point guard position, he thinks Ravena will be the one taking over his role.

"Oo, kasi makikita mo kay Kiefer na willing siyang matuto," Castro said when asked if he sees Ravena as his heir apparent.

(Yes, because you can see that Kiefer really wants to learn.)

In 4 games in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Ravena is norming 7.3 points, 3.3 assists and two rebounds.

"At the same time, nandiyan si Terrence (Romeo), so 'yung tandem na 'yun for sure magiging maganda," Castro added.

(At the same time, Terrence Romeo is there and their tandem for sure will be a sight to see.)

Ravena, meanwhile, is relishing the opportunity of learning from the country's top players as he matures in the international basketball scene.

"In terms of preparing on the big stage, siguro malaking bagay 'yung araw-araw mong nakakasama 'yung pinakamagaling na players dito sa atin," said Ravena.

(In terms of preparing on the big stage, it is a big thing that you get to play with the Philippines' best players.)

He also notes that Gilas' trust in him at a young age has been a confidence booster.

"I guess the preparation is just a matter of playing together, trusting the system, trusting yourself as well. So lahat naman kami, pwede magstep up dito sa big stage."

(I guess the preparation is just a matter of playing together, trusting the system, trusting yourself as well. Everyone of us can step up here in the big stage.)

With the 3rd window of the Asian Qualifiers still happening in 4 months, Ravena will return to action in the PBA where he is averaging 16.9 points, 5.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds for the playoff-bound NLEX Road Warriors. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Wrestling Federation (MWF) leveled up in its relaunch show in 2018 on Sunday, breaking new ground and gearing up for a bigger, braver future.

The occasion and the place for MWF Open House: Level UP couldn't have been more fitting. February 25, the anniversary of the EDSA People Power revolt. University of the Philippines (UP), the cradle of leaders and revolutionaries.

And after a rocky rookie year, the MWF looks poised to make more history moving forward.

The MWF "relaunch" saw a new ring, a revamped logo, a sleeker presentation, and new faces doing commentary, ringside interviews and announcing duties.

MWF Commissioner Mike Shannon also said they are now "under new management," but put off giving further details in the meantime.

Warm up

The fiery warrior Ashura (with Kyle Sison) faced off against "The Grunge Grappler" Frankie Thurteen in the opening bout.

The inter-gender match was a roughhouse affair. Sison almost upended Thurteen by providing the distraction, but Frankie took him out from the apron with a vicious kick, then finished the match with a God's Last Gift suplex on Ashura for the victory.

After that, he sent a message to "Danger" Rex Lawin, his opponent at the next show, MWF Kasaysayan.

Speaking of Lawin, he was scheduled to be in the next match, but his manager Coach Gus Queens took to the mic first.

Queens trolled the UP crowd by wearing a La Salle shirt, until UP's very own RG took a stand. RG sought to follow that up with a win over Lawin, but Rex subdued the alumnus with a rear-naked choke.

MWF Kasaysayan

MWF dished out more bombshell announcements for MWF Kasaysayan on Sunday, April 8, at Elements at Centris in Quezon City.

Its main event is a tag team match featuring Robin Sane and Mr. Lucha, each with a mystery partner of international proportions.

Sane's tag team partner: his opponent at December's MWF Noche Buena, Hong Kong wrestling pioneer Ho Ho Lun.

<blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">At <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MWFOpenHouseLevelUP?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#MWFOpenHouseLevelUP</a>: Robin Sane’s tag partner at <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MWFKasaysayan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#MWFKasaysayan</a> was announced. As for Mr. Lucha, he would partner with Singapore Pro Wrestling (SPW) Southeast Asian Tag Team Champion, Eurasian Dragon.

Commentators Sonny Go, Tarek El Tayech and Tristan Paul Creed ran down the rest of the MWF Kasaysayan card, besides the tag team main event and Thurteen versus Lawin:

  • Hanzello Shilva vs. Ninja Ryugin
  • Ashura and Kyle Sison vs. Aldrin Richards and Morgan Vaughn in a sort of "strange bedfellows" tag match
  • Brother Jomar vs. Fabio Makisig

'History Maker' brawl for all

When almost all Kasaysayan combatants filled the ring, Fabio Makisig emerged from the back and berated the entire MWF roster. He then set his sights on preachin' Brother Jomar.

{source}

<blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Makisig then confronted his <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/MWFKasaysayan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#MWFKasaysayan</a> opponent, Brother Jomar, sparking an all-out brawl! <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@RapplerSports</a> <a href="https://t.co/cdPwljHS9W">pic.twitter.com/cdPwljHS9W</a></p>&mdash; Michael Bueza (@mikebueza) <a href="https://twitter.com/mikebueza/status/967710411918225409?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 25, 2018</a></blockquote>

That sparked an all-out brawl, halted by Commissioner Shannon, who had a better idea: a battle royal for the first-ever "MWF History Maker" award.

Many feuds and issues unraveled in the over-the-top-rope bout, from everybody eliminating Makisig, Richards and Vaughn betraying each other, and Mr. Lucha teaching his proteges Ashura and Kyle Sison a lesson.

There were also surprising and amusing moves, such as Gigz Stryker giving everyone a Kalibre 3:16. But later, he pushed RG from harm's way and took the hit from Hanzello Shilva.

Rex Lawin was eventually eliminated by Thurteen from the ring apron. Frankie himself teetered on the apron while Mr. Lucha and Robin Sane fought over who's going to eliminate Frankie.

Overall review

Lots of new things and surprises unfolded at MWF Open House: Level UP. Each active MWF wrestler was reintroduced to the audience, thanks to the nice set-up leading to the surprise battle royal main event. Everyone had the opportunity to shine.

Hats off also to a smoother production. While some minor flaws remained – like the ring ropes not being as tight as it should be – it did not take away from the overall feel.

Good thing the crowd can hear the wrestlers' promos clearer now, eliciting expected reactions from and interactions with the crowd.

The opening match was unpolished, but a good effort by Ashura and Frankie. Plus, Ashura and Kyle Sison would have to listen more to Mr. Lucha's lessons, and to each other.

Props to Rex Lawin for his strong performance in the ring against RG. The segment between Coach Gus Queens and RG was also nicely done.

Also deserving praise are Morgan Vaughn's promo on Aldrin Richards, Fabio Makisig's roast of the MWF roster, and this impressive move by Mr. Lucha during the battle royal:

Ceres-Negros aims for Group G lead in Home United rematch

MANILA, Philippines – After opening their AFC Cup campaign with a 9-0 drubbing of Boueng Ket Angkor (BKA) FC , Ceres-Negros FC looks to continue their explosive start vs Singapore's Home United for their first away game on Tuesday, February 27.

This will be a rematch of the 2017 AFC Cup ASEAN Zonal finals where Ceres-Negros was crowned ASEAN Zone champions, winning on a 3-2 aggregate in Pana-ad Park and Stadium.

It definitely won't be as easy for the Busmen as Home United was able to win the first of the two-legged ASEAN Zonal finals series, 2-1, in Singapore.

Ceres will be banking on their experience in the 2018 AFC Champions League and the new additions to their team, including Takumi Uesato who scored a brace against BKA last February 13.

"Ceres has the advantage because they have played more games than us. They played the qualifier in the champions league. We do respect Ceres because they are a good team. They are good players. But for us I think we have prepared well," said Home United head coach Aidil Sharin.

Despite edging out the rest with a +9 goal difference, a win by Ceres would put them on top of Group G.

"It's the second game in the group stage and it is always important. I expect, as always, a tough game because everyone wants to win. They (Home United) play at home. Of course they need the points like us and I think it will be a big fight tomorrow," said Ceres head coach Risto Vidakovic.

Ceres-Negros co-captain Martin Steuble was present in the press conference and will be included again in the lineup after being sidelined due to an injury in 2017. The Fil-Swiss midfielder will be suiting up for match whether as a starter or a substitute available for Vidakovic to use.

From watching the team clinch the inaugural PFL title to making into the 3rd round of the AFC Champions League preliminaries, Steuble feels the confidence of his team which may play a big factor in their performance on Tuesday.

"We had a very good game in our first game, great result. Of course that boosts our confidence. But also the games before we had against high ranked teams. We were able to perform really really well so I think the spirit of the team is very high and were full of confidence," said Steuble.

"Of course we know about the strengths of Home United and we will respect [it], but of course we will go out there and compete and try to get the 3 points here in Singapore."

Ceres-Negros will square off against Home United at 7:30pm, Jalen Besar Stadium in Singapore. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University's (FEU) middle blocker Celine Domingo left no mercy for her former team, the Univeristy of the East (UE) Lady Warriors, with a 19-point production on Saturday, February 24.

Domingo last played for UE in Season 78 and served her residency in Season 79 before she was able to debut as a Lady Tamaraw.

The dynamic duo of FEU captain Bernadeth Pons and Chinchin Basas continue to power the Morayta-based squad's offense, but Domingo has already provided immediate impact since the start of the season.

Domingo is the second leading best blocker of the UAAP behind National University's Jaja Santiago as of Sunday, February 25, tallying a total of 17 kill blocks and averaging 0.77 blocks per set. In the game vs UE, the middle blocker's 19 points consisted of 11 spikes, 6 blocks and two aces, earning the praise of head coach George Pascua.

"Yung knowing naman middle blocker siya, ‘yun naman ang trabaho niya. Na-achieve naman niya ang expectation ko sa kanya na maka-block," said Pascua

(She knows that she's a middle blocker, that's her job. She achieved my expectation of her to block.)

Being a former Lady Warriors herself, Domingo also sympathized with the newly-managed UE team whose former head coach Francis Vicente left due to personal reasons. UE board member Rod Roque is now taking charge of the Lady Warriors until the end of the season.

"Actually noong nalaman ko, nagulat ako eh. Bakit? Bakit ganoon kabilis? Pero siyempre di ko naman alam yung reason kung bakit pero siyempre masakit nga iyon if ever na nagsisimula palang yung season, ganoon na nangyari," said Domingo.

(Actually when I found out, I got shocked. Why? Why is it that fast? But of course, I don't know the reason why but of course it would hurt if ever because the season is just starting and that's what already happened.)

Domingo still keeps in touch with her former team mates, especially Me-an Mendrez, who turned out to be her best friend in the team. Mendrez was even the one who lifted the Lady Warriors against FEU as she topscored for her team with 21 points.

"As usual, clap clap ako sa kanya. Galing talaga niya," said Domingo of Mendrez. "Kami talaga yung besties noong na sa UE pa ako kaya sobrang happy ko for her."

(As usual, I clap for her. She's really good. We were really the besties when I was still in UE so I'm really happy for her.)

Although Domingo does not talk about volleyball with the other Lady Warriors, she personally sees that UE has the capability to improve from being cellar-dwellers in the past seasons and adjust to a new system under Roque.

"Lahat umaangat. Nakikita naman natin na lahat talaga nag-iimprove. Lahat talaga ng team pantay-pantay ngayon," said Domingo

"Alam ko kayang kaya nila yan (adjusting to a new coach). Malakas sila. Kilala ko sila and alam ko na lalaban pa sila throughout the season."

(Everyone is raising their level. I see that everyone is improving. All the teams are even now. I know that they can adjust to a new coach. They're strong. I know them and I know that they will fight throughout the season.) – Rappler.com

Undefeated Thai 'dwarf giant' one win from Mayweather record

BANGKOK, Thailand – Unsung outside the boxing world, a Thai fighter nicknamed the "dwarf giant" is quietly closing in on Floyd Mayweather's undefeated 50 fight record and with it an unlikely place among the sport's greats.

At 5ft,  2in and weighing just 105lb (47.6kg), minimum-weight Wanheng Menayothin is shorter, leaner and significantly less wealthy than "Money" Mayweather, the brash American who was teased from retirement last year by a $100 million purse to fight MMA star Conor McGregor.

But this spring Wanheng could tie Mayweather's 50-0 record and enter boxing lore.

His 50th bout in April or May is set to be against Panama's Leroy Estrada in Thailand, a low-key affair that will be followed by fans and boxing enthusiasts, but not the global audience drawn to the cross-discipline spectacle between Mayweather and McGregor.

The milestone is generating boxing buzz in a country that is better known for Muay Thai, the kingdom's boxing-style martial art that also allows kicking, kneeing and elbows to the head.

"Am I proud? Yes I am, for being on par with the superstars," the softly spoken 32-year-old said while sitting on a tire and wrapping his fists with gauze ahead of a training session at his Bangkok gym.

His record of 49 wins with 17 knockouts has been earned against relative minnows – many of them regional fighters – but he has been dominant in the minimum-weight division and holds the World Boxing Council belt.

With his present stats he has already matched the legendary fighter Rocky Marciano, but he doesn't dwell too much on the numbers.

"I never thought about breaking records. I just want to win every fight like all athletes who don't want to lose. Keep winning until I quit."

Fighting words

Wanheng is from Thailand's poor rural northeast.

Growing up he viewed fighting as a way out of poverty and moved to Bangkok at age 12 to train.

"When he arrived, he didn't have the best skills, but he got to that point with determination," gym owner Chaiyasit Menayothin said.

Wanheng's legal name is Chayaphon Moonsri.

But like many fighters in Thailand, in both boxing and Muay Thai, he has several nom de guerres for the ring in a nod to sponsors, gyms and his own style.

His endurance in bouts combined with his size earned him the label "dwarf giant", while his alias Wanheng Menayothin derives from the gym owner's name.

To add to the confusion, a promotional tie-in sometimes sees him add "Five-Star Grilled Chicken" to his title because of a sponsorship deal with a Thai food giant CP.

He is not alone. Another Thai boxer competing around the same weight division punches under the alias "Knockout CP Freshmart" while other fighters have taken on the name of a Thai battery company.

Down a quiet Bangkok road fringed with palm fronds, Wanheng's gym is in a large shed partially exposed to elements, with a ring, weights, rows of equipment, two cats and the occasional intrusive bird.

Wanheng started out in Muay Thai but made the career change as he was running out of opponents, according to the gym owner.

But the move to boxing can also bring a higher-profile and more prize money.

In preparation for the historic 50th bout, trainer Supap Boonrawd, 54, is working Wanheng hard through intense daily sparring and fitness sessions and the thud of punches landing on heavy bags fills the humid gym.

"It will be a moment of pride for him and the whole country too," Supap said of the possible 50th victory. – Rappler.com

Neymar suffers fractured metatarsal, serious doubt to face Real Madrid

PARIS, France – Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar suffered a sprained ankle and a fractured metatarsal when he was stretchered off in Sunday's win over Marseille, the Ligue 1 leaders announced on Monday, February 26.

The Brazilian, who signed for PSG in a world-record move from Barcelona last year, is now a serious injury doubt for the Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid at the Parc des Princes on March 6.

PSG trail in the tie after a 3-1 first-leg defeat in Spain, with their hopes of a maiden Champions League title taking a further body blow with the confirmation of Neymar's injury, although they didn't specify how long the 26-year-old would be out of action.

"Additional examinations performed today (ultrasound and CT) confirmed an external sprain of the right ankle, but also an associated fissure of the fifth metatarsal," PSG said in a short statement.

The chances of Neymar returning to fitness in time to face the reigning European champions now appear extremely slim.

He is all but certain to miss Wednesday's French Cup quarter-final against Marseille and the weekend's Ligue 1 visit to Troyes, with the Real clash just three days later.

Metatarsal injuries usually take weeks, if not months to recover from.

Just last year, Neymar's international teammate Gabriel Jesus was out of action for two months after breaking a metatarsal with Manchester City, and has struggled with further injuries since.

Former England stars David Beckham and Wayne Rooney spent six weeks on the sidelines with metatarsal injuries in the past, with both still arguably being rushed back too soon for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups respectively.

Brazil fans will also be keeping a close eye on Neymar's fitness, especially after he missed their 2014 World Cup thrashing by Germany with injury.

PSG, who lead the French top flight by a massive 14 points, also said that Brazilian center-back Marquinhos had picked up a leg muscle problem.

Stretchered off in anguish

Neymar was stretchered off in anguish towards the end of PSG's 3-0 victory over their great rivals in the capital, having innocuously rolled his right ankle and flopped to the ground in pain.

With the game already as good as over, the stadium held its breath as he was treated and then carried away, with PSG forced to finish the match with 10 men having made all of their substitutions.

Neymar himself posted a picture on Instagram of his right leg with the ankle and foot heavily bandaged, before later appearing to delete the post. "08:10. Finished for today," said the caption.

French newspaper Le Parisien had earlier reported that tests on Monday morning had ruled out a "fracture of a serious sprain".

But the club later confirmed their fans' worst fears, with the return game against Real just eight days away.

Despite the injury potentially benefiting Madrid, the Spanish side's coach Zinedine Zidane claimed he hoped Neymar would recover in time to play.

"I'm not happy with the Neymar injury and I hope he can be back for the game. I will never want a rival player to be out injured," Zidane said at a press conference in the Spanish capital earlier on Monday.

While Neymar was leaving the Parc des Princes on crutches on Sunday, PSG coach Unai Emery insisted he was "optimistic".

"We will be optimistic. If I had to say today (whether or not he will face Real) I would rather say yes," said the Spaniard.

But now his team's hopes of keeping their European dream alive are hanging by a thread, despite the continued presence up front of Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe.

PSG have never reached the Champions League final, and lost at the last-16 stage last season after a humiliating 6-1 second-leg thrashing by a Neymar-inspired Barcelona, having won the first game 4-0. – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines –  The Nazareth School of National University (NU) Bullpups denied a rare season sweep for the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eaglets by winning a crucial Game 2, 70-67, in the FilOil Flying V Centre on Tuesday, February 27.

The stars were out in full force early on for Ateneo, as Mythical Five members SJ Belangel and Dave Ildefonso boosted the Eaglets with a 7-0 run. NU caught up, however, and fished two early fouls on Belangel, who was forced to sit down for the remainder of the quarter. Ateneo’s woes continued as Ildefonso was called for back-to-back turnovers and NU’s Miguel Oczon drained a go-ahead triple, 21-19.

Oczon continued to wax hot in the second, as he nailed a 4-point play to put the Bullpups up 6, 27-21. However, NU would not score for the next 8 minutes, as the Eaglets vaulted away to a 16-2 run which included Kai Sotto’s first 2 blocks and scrappy play that put star Bullpup Rhayyan Amsali out of commission for the quarter. However, NU recovered enough to close the gap to one at halftime, 34-35.

Controversy struck – quite literally – at the 7:54 mark of the third period, when NU’s Cyril Gonzales dove to the Eaglets bench in pursuit of a loose ball. Ateneo’s Tanedo ignited a fight when he struck Gonzales’ head, prompting the NU swingman to kick his shin in retaliation. After a lengthy review, Gonzales, Allan Tanedo and teammate Amchel Angeles were all tossed from the game. However, after another review minutes later, both Ateneo players were called back and their fouls were downgraded to technical fouls, which were then both assessed to Ateneo head coach Joe Silva. However, despite the two technicals, Silva remained in the game. Meanwhile, NU’s Gonzales remained ejected.

With that mess behind them, both teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the period, ending in a one-point lead for Ateneo, 48-47.

The game reached a fever pitch in the final frame, as Paul Manalang drained a go-ahead triple to put NU up two, 50-48. The Bullpups maintained their awareness and baited Sotto’s blocks possession after possession, opening up the post for easy buckets.

After back-to-back Belangel buckets, Michael Malonzo nailed two clutch free-throws, which was followed by a tough stepback from Joaqui Manuel. However, Malonzo immediately answered with a drive to the lane to put NU up one, 68-67.

Following the Ateneo timeout with 5 seconds remaining, Jason Credo called Ildefonso for the inbound, but Malonzo successfully intercepted it for the game-sealing bucket on the other end.

For one last time, both teams will return to FilOil for the deciding Game 3 on Friday, March 2.

Oczon led the team both in heroics and scoring 17 points with 4 triples. Amsali fought back his injury and nailed a double-double of 11 points and 13 boards (10 offensive). Paolo Javillonar also muscled his way to 8 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

On the Ateneo end, Ildefonso topscored with 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Sotto, meanwhile, was thoroughly planned for and was limited to 10 points, 8 boards and 5 blocks, effectively halving his monster Game 1 triple-double of 22 points, 16 boards and 11 rejections. Belangel was also held to 10 points, 4 rebounds and a lone assist due to early foul trouble.

The Scores

NU (70) – Oczon 17, Amsali 11, Malonzo 10, Javillonar 8, Manalang 7, Minerva 7, Fortea 4, Gonzales 3, Coyoca 3, Felisilda 0, Pangilinan 0

ADMU (67) – Ildefonso 14, Sotto 10, Belangel 10, Credo 7, Manuel 6, David 6, Escalona 5, Angeles 5, Chiu 4, Diaz 0

MANILA, Philippines – The National Cheerleading Championships (NCC) welcomed its first international participant, the Chinese Cheerleading Association (CCA), in the opening of its 13th season on Tuesday, February 27.

This marks the start of an envisioned long-term friendship between the Philippines and China in cheerleading. As the International Cheer Union (ICU) declared cheerleading to be an Olympic sport in 2016, both the NCC and the CCA aimed to develop relations with other national cheerleading organizations in line with the sport's development.

"We are developing relations with other countries and that's why China is here," said Head of NCC Itos Valdes.

"We've known the heads of these (other) federations for a while, but China is the only one this year who [asked] 'can we join (the competition)' and I said of course."

In this year's competition, two Chinese cheerleading squads – ShenZhen HuaCheng primary school and Jilin Institute of Physical Education – placed 1st runner-up in the All Girls Junior Hip Hop and the Open Mixed Hip Hop divisions, respectively.

According to Executive Director of the International Department of CCA Katie Ma, Jilin is a collegiate team composed of members who recently competed in the hip hop competitions, making the NCC a stepping stone to higher level competitions internationally.

"It’s a college team so you can see that these athletes just started hiphop when they [went] to the college. So that’s one or two years. It's been such a great experience for them to learn hip hop, to learn cheer dance. and to compete internationally in the Philippines," said Ma.

Both the NCC and CCA also plan to establish their own international competitions in the future. Valdes aims to extend the invitation to countries such as Korea, Japan and Australia in an open competition which they plan to launch next year.

CCA, on the other hand, is already preparing for two international competitions, the China Cheerleading Open in Nanjing City and the 2018 International Cheerleading Elite games. Returning the favor of being invited to this year's NCC, CCA has already invited the Philippines to compete against 15 to 16 countries and regions.

"The Philippines will be one of the international teams in out of 15 or 16 countries or regions so I would like to say that I would like to build a long-term friendship with us," said Ma.

The 13th NCC will continue its All-Girl Cheerleading Championships on Thursday, March 1 and the Co-Ed Cheerleading Championships on Friday, March 2. Both competitions will be live on Aksyon TV starting at 11am.

Both countries would meet again in the ICU 2018 World Championships on April 25-27, 2018 in Orlando.

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino clubs Global Cebu FC and Ceres-Negros FC both drew 1-1 against their respective opponents on Tuesday, February 27.

PFL champions Ceres-Negros failed to edge out rivals Home United in the Group F standings as the 2017 ASEAN Zonal finalist split the top of the standings with 4 points apiece off a 1-1-0 record.

Global Cebu dropped to the bottom of the Group G standings with opponent Bali United as both teams have no wins, one draw and one loss.

Patrick Deyto heroics pay off

Playing their first home game at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, Global looked to bounce back from their loss against FLC Thanh Hoa with a home field advantage.

In the 11th minute, Bali goalkeeper Wawan Hendrawan mishandled his first touch on Paolo Bugas' cross from the right flank. This allowed Curt Dizon to rebound with a header that found itself at the back of the net.

Darryl Roberts almost doubled the lead for Global in the 63rd minute. As he was left open at the left side of the 6-yard box, Hendrawan deflected his attack on time.

Bali United was able to even the score in the 74th minute where Ilija Spasojevic headed it home off a corner from Facil.

Global Cebu will continue its AFC Cup campaign on Wednesday, March 7 against Yangon United who stands on top of the Group G table.

Super's late equalizer saves Ceres from loss

Elsewhere in Jalen Besar Stadium, Singapore, Ceres-Negros failed to ride with their 9-0 victory momentum as errors plagued the Philippines' 2018 AFC Champions League delegates.

Bienvienido Marañon found the back of the net early in the 7th minute, but the goal was disallowed as the flag was raised for offside. Three minutes later, Marañon woes continued as his spot kick was deflected off a post.

In the 21st minute, Ceres defender Sean Kane committed a foul in the box, allowing the Singaporean team to win a penalty. Sharil Ishak converted from the penalty two minutes later that gave Home United the 1-0 lead in the match.

Both teams failed to slip past each other's defenses until Super Herrera broke free with a header off a Manny Ott corner kick in the 79th minute, equalizing the score, 1-1.

Hard-hitting Kazakh Golovkin was widely believed to have won last September's first battle against Mexican star Alvarez, when a bizarre judging controversy dominated the aftermath of the bout.

While one judge scored the fight for Golovkin and another had it even, there was widespread astonishment at the card of judge Adalaide Byrd, who marked it 118-110 in favor of Alvarez.

On Tuesday the two fighters came face-to-face before a crowd of fans in downtown Los Angeles – and both vowed that judges would not be a factor when they climb into the ring again at Las Vegas's T-Mobile Arena in what is likely to be one of the fights of the year.

"Everything is ready for an amazing show," Golovkin told reporters, unsurprisingly adamant that he had won the first bout.

"I felt very comfortable. I felt I won. 100 percent," added Golovkin, 37-0 with one draw and 33 knockouts.

Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, meanwhile taunted Alvarez's hit-and-run strategy in the first meeting.

"I definitely think he ran a lot more than we thought he was going to," Sanchez said.

"I talked to (Michael) Jordan about it and asked if he could make us some shoes so that we can go a bit faster and are able to catch him.

"I hope for the fans that he puts on the fight that he said he was going to do the first time."

Canelo unimpressed

Alvarez, 49-1 with two drawn and 34 knockouts, was unimpressed with Sanchez's barbs, insisting he had done enough to win the first instalment.

"I went in there, I outboxed him, I went on the ropes, I made him miss, I controlled the centre of the ring," Alvarez said.

"I'm a technical fighter. I'm not a jack-ass who just comes forward, throwing punches and gets hit.

"I hope he (Sanchez) goes home tonight and really thinks about what he says. Because he's saying stupid, idiotic things."

Alvarez however acknowledged he could have been more aggressive in the first fight, maintaining that he had not taken advantage of openings that presented themselves.

That was something he plans to rectify in the rematch.

"I learned a lot," Alvarez said. "When I made him miss there were a lot of openings that I didn't take advantage of. Now I'm going to work in the gym to take advantage of those chances.

"We both want to win convincingly. We both want to erase any doubt. And that's going to make the fight more interesting -- because if we take more risks, there's going to be more openings."

Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler meanwhile said his team would pay close attention to the judges chosen for the Nevada fight, and would not hesitate to object to any appointed individual they were unhappy with.

"There's going to be a lot more focus on the judges going into this fight," Loeffler said.

"We have the right to object to any judges we think aren't going to be satisfactory. Hopefully the judges won't be a factor." - Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons put a halt to their losing streak by defeating the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tigresses in 4 sets, 31-33, 25-23, 25-16, 25-12, on Wednesday, February 28 at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

This is UP's first win since their opening game win against the University of the East Lady Warriors. The Lady Maroons have been losing in straight sets in their previous games.

The Lady Maroons controlled the whole 4th set, shutting out the Tigresses with an  8-point lead, 17-9. Maris Layug's block brought it to set point while Isa Molde scored off the block to clinch the victory.

UP and UST are now tied at 2-4 in the UAAP Season 80 Women's Volleyball tournament.

Tots Carlos scored a season high of 32 points off 27 spikes, 3 blocks and two aces. Molde followed with her own season high of 24 points.

Sisi Rondina continued to lead the UST with 23 points all from attacks, while making 9 excellent digs. Christine Francisco followed with 12 points off 7 spikes, 3 blocks and two aces.

After trailing 19-10, the Lady Maroons capitalized on UST's errors midway in the first set and raced to cut the deficit to one, 23-22, with a 12-4 run. The Lady Maroons extended the set 5 times off UST's errors. The Tigresses took the match on their 3rd set point as Carla Sandoval's ace gave them the 1-0 lead to the match.

Both teams got off to a tight second set until UP gained advantage via Isa Molde's and Tots Carlos' efforts. UST's errors also gifted them with free points that allowed them to pull away to a 3-point lead, 18-15.

The Lady Maroons were at set point when the Tigresses rallied back to cut the deficit to one, 24-23, via Sandoval's crosscourt hit. A block by Ayel Estrañero gave UP its first set win since their opening game against UE.

The Tigresses blew their early lead in the 3rd set as UST tied the score at 12-all and continued their 9-0 run capped off by a Carlos attack off the block. The Lady Maroons managed to stretch it to a 10-point lead at set point, 24-14.

After Dindin Pacres and Rondina combined for back-to-back points to cut the deficit, Carlos closed out the set and gave UP at 2-1 advantage.

The Scores:

UP (3) – Carlos 32, Molde 24, Layug 7, Buitre 6, Cailing 6, Estranero 1.

UST (1) – Rondina 23, Francisco 12, Pacres 10, Sandoval 8, Palec 4, Bicar 1.

UP Lady Maroons channel their inner Paul Desiderio in win over UST

MANILA, Philippines – "Atin ito!" (This is ours!)

Even the Paul Desiderio mindset made an impact on the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons in their 4-set victory over the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tigresses on Wednesday, February 23.

The Lady Maroons skidded down to a 4-game losing streak, where they had to experience each one of them in straight sets. History shows that the Lady Maroons would always eventually collapse after taking the lead midway in each set of their previous losses.

"Sobrang importante (ang panalo), sobrang bumaba kami eh. Tsaka sobrang nakakapagod matalo. So kailangan i-defend, kailangan namin lumaban," said Tots Carlos.

(The win is super important, we really went down. And it's super tiring to lose so we really have to defend. We have to fight.)

Carlos exploded with a career-high of 32 points and Isa Molde broke out with 24 points as she continued to raise her level of play since their game against Ateneo.

Head coach Godfrey Okumu also experimented on new rotations in this game, switching around the positions of Rem Cailing and Ayel Estranero. Estranero was the main setter in their game against the Ateneo Lady Eagles, but was given defensive specialist responsibility on Wednesday's game.

As the team members were able to adjust to their respective roles in this game, Okumu was hopeful that this might be the "missing piece" in their games.

"I tried it in the last game and we thought it would work, and I believe it will continue working because it's like having two liberos on the court and two setters at the same time," said Okumu.

Aside from improving their struggling defense, the top scorers Carlos and Molde would have to do their part to lift the Lady Maroons from their 2-4 start to this season.

"Kailangan naming tanggapin (ang role namin) eh kasi wala namang iba. Si Ayel defense and [setting], sino pa bang aatake diba? So kailangan naming akuin ang trabaho namin noong binigay na role sa amin para magawa namin ang gusto ipagawa sa amin," said Carlos.

(We have to accept our roles because there are no other people. Ayel is in defense and setting, who else will be attacking, right? So we have to own our jobs once they are given to us so that we can do what they want us to do.)

The Lady Maroons will continue to build on their confidence this season as they face the undefeated National University Lady Bulldogs on Sunday, March 4 at the Filoil Flying Centre.

They draw inspiration from the Paul Desiderio as they head into their last first elimination round game.

"So siyempre napanood namin si Paul Desiderio buong puso niya binigay kung ano meron siya. Yun yung gusto ng teammates namin," said Carlos.

(So of course we've watched Paul Desiderio who gave everything he had. That's what our also teammates want.)– Rappler.com

TNT improved to 5-6 to keep its playoff bid alive and stymied the Road Warriors' 4-game winning streak.

It was all TNT since then as the Road Warriors got buried by as much as 38, 31-69, in the 3rd period.

Kelly Williams paced the KaTropa with 17 points, 16 rebounds and 3 steals while new acquisition Jericho Cruz quickly made an impact with 17 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and two steals.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws stunned the previously-undefeated National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs in 4 sets, 25-22, 25-27, 25-13, 25-20, on Wednesday, February 28 at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

After finishing the 3rd set up by 12 points, the Lady Tamaraws rode on their winning momentum and took full control of the 4th set. Bernadeth Pons’ back-to-back attacks brought it to set point, 24-19, and an attack error by Roma Doromal cost NU its first loss.

FEU improves its record to 4-2, while NU's record is stained with one loss, 5-1 in the UAAP Season 80 Women's Volleyball tournament.

Pons led the FEU Lady Tamaraws with 18 points all from spikes and Chinchin Basas followed with 16 points off 12 spikes, two blocks and two aces.

Risa Sato topscored for the Lady Bulldogs for the first time this season with 14 points off spikes while making 11 excellent digs. Jaja Santiago followed with 13 points.

The Lady Bulldogs got off to a 7-2 start in the first set, but the Lady Tamaraws were able to tie it at 7-all via a Chinchin Basas ace. NU was able to break away from the stalemate and were 4 points away from taking the first set with a drop by Jasmine Nabor and a Risa Sato quick.

The Lady Tamaraws rallied back with a 5-1 run capped off by back-to-back attacks by Celine Domingo.

The Lady Buldogs took control of the second set as they held a comfortable 4-point lead, 21-17, until the Kyle Negrito extended the set at 24-all. Urdas' attack brought it to set point and Santiago evened the match at one-set apiece.

FEU dominated the 4th set as they pulled away to a 8-point lead capped off by a Celine Domingo ace. NU's defense continued to struggle as Heather Guino-o fired back-to-back aces that made it a double-digit lead for FEU, 23-11. Pons' heroics finished the set to give FEU a 2-1 advantage.

The Scores

FEU (3) – Pons 18, Basas 16, Domingo 12, Negrito 9, Villareal 6, Guino-o 5, Malabanan 2.

NU (1) – Sato 14, Santiago 13, Doria 11, Urdas 8, Nabor 4, Singh 1, Paran 1.

MANILA, Philippines – In the second set, Bernadeth Pons committed a crucial error on the service line that made FEU head coach George Pascua grab his player's warmers and go:

{source}

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Things are getting too close for comfort  <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/UAAPSeason80Volleyball?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#UAAPSeason80Volleyball</a> <a href="https://t.co/sm4SkdUrZK">pic.twitter.com/sm4SkdUrZK</a></p>&mdash; ABS-CBN Sports (@abscbnsports) <a href="https://twitter.com/abscbnsports/status/968783768344408064?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 28, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}

"Crucial eh. Nakakapanghinayang lang kasi. Di bale ng mamatay sa paluan, huwag lang sa service kasi yun ang nakakapagpatay sa amin eh kaya as much as possible eh iwasan," said Pascua about his reaction.

"Kaya ayun yung reaction ko pero out of nowhere yun. Di ko naman alam na nakita sa TV."

(It was crucial. It was a waste. It's okay if it's an attack error, just not the service because that's the one that will kill us so as much as possible we have to avoid it. That's why that was my reaction but it was out of nowhere. I didn't know that it was seen on TV.)

Pons' service error saw FEU go down 23-20, but little did Pascua and his team know that this would drastically shift their momentum.

"Ako. Nakita ko kasi ako nag-serve nun eh," said Pons when asked about who saw Pascua's actions. "Siyempre crucial na kasi yun eh. Line of 20 na yung score, palaging sinasabi na ni coach na talagang nakakabago ng momentum yung service error."

(Me. I saw it because I was the one who served. Of course, that was crucial. The score was at the line of 20 and coach always says that the momentum really changes with a service error.)

"Noong after ng nangyari yun, andun na yung drive ko na babawi ako," added Pons

(After that happened, the drive to make up for things was there.)

Even though NU took the second set, the Lady Tamaraws rallied back from a 21-17 disadvantage to extend the set by tying the score at 24-all. They then took the 3rd set up by 12 points and finished the match in 4 sets.

Pascua and his squad were eagerly prepared for the currently first seed team. Everything bore fruit from practicing on their service-receives as well as limiting NU stalwart Jaja Santiago to only 13 points.

"Pinractice namin yung service-receive. Nag materialize naman. Saka yung block namin kay Jaja. 80% nasunod yung game plan," said Pascua.

(We practiced our service-receive. It materialized. And our blocks on Jaja, we followed our game plan.)

The Lady Tamaraws will face the Sisi-Rondina-led University of Santo Tomas in their next game on Saturday, March 3 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Their 3rd straight win, especially against the Lady Bulldogs, will play a big factor in their match against the Tigresses.

"Nakuha na namin ngayon, pero may isa pa (game). Kailangan pa namin mag focus. Bitbit na namin yung confidence na naipanalo namin yung game ngayon," said FEU captain Pons.

(We got it this time, but we have one more game. We still have to focus. We are carrying the confidence that we won from this game.) – Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters secured a playoff berth in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup with a 95-80 victory over the San Miguel Beermen at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, February 28.

Leading by a measly 4 points midway through the 4th period, 74-70, the Elasto Painters drained 3 straight triples, two coming from Jewel Ponferada, that sparked a game-clinching 21-10 salvo.

It was Rain or Shine's 6th win in 10 games.

Beau Belga finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists for Rain or Shine, which is currently at 4th place behind San Miguel, the Magnolia Hotshots, and the Alaska Aces.

Ponferada added 17 points off 5 treys to go with 3 rebounds, Mark Borboran had 11 points and 5 boards, and Gabe Norwood chipped in 10 points, 6 rebounds, and two assists in the win. Don Trollano made his presence felt for the E-Painters with 8 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

"I credit the players, especially those who didn't play much in the next conference. I credit Don Trollano and Jewel, even Beau, they battled it out today. Syempre, at least we beat a team that is complete today," said Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia.

Although San Miguel had the edge in the rebounding department (62-53), the Elasto Painters did damage from the outside, hitting 17 triples to the Beermen's 10.

Rain or Shine also had 9 more assists, 11 more steals and turned the ball over only 7 times compared to San Miguel's 24.

June Mar Fajardo paced the Beermen with 19 markers, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Marcio Lassiter fired 17 points while Alex Cabagnot, who returned after a 6-game absence due to a foot injury, chalked up 13 points in the loss.

Although the Beermen tied Magnolia in the standings behind identical 8-3 cards, they will still enter the quarterfinals at first place after beating the Hotshots last February 4.

The Scores:

Rain or Shine (95): Belga 19, Ponferada 17, Borboran 11, Norwood 10, Trollano 8, Daquioag 8, Nambatac 6, Ahanmisi 5, King 3, Washington 3, Almazan 3, Maiquez 2, King 0
