MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Led by the clutch play of veteran big man Alfred Aroga, the NU Bulldogs won their opener in UAAP Season 79 following a closely-fought game against the UE Red Warriors, 72-66, on Wednesday, September 7, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Aroga, who looked like he re-aggravated his injured quadricep, converted big layups and grabbed crucial rebounds in the final minutes of the fourth period to help his team pull away and secure the win.
The third-year standout led his team with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks, while J-Jay Alejandro was the Bulldogs’ other double-digit scorer after registering 13 points. Jess Diputado also pitched in with 9 points.
UE was led by the 18 points and 4 rebounds of Edson Batiller, while Alvin Pasaol finished with 10 points and 6 boards.
NU shot 45% from the field which made up for the team’s 28 turnovers. UE, for its part, hit only 29% from the field and 52% from the foul stripe.– Rappler.com
