Olympic road ends for Eric Cray in 400m hurdles semis

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The finish line for Filipino-American Eric Cray turned out to be the semifinal of men's 400m hurdles on Wednesday, August 17 during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Cray, 27, failed to qualify for the final after coming up 7th of 8 competitors in the first semifinal heat with a time of 49.37 seconds. His personal best time is 48.98 seconds. Only the top two finishers from each semifinal heat will advance to the final along with the next two fastest runners.

Cray's final rank is 17th in a total field of 24.

The two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, who was born to a Filipina mother in Olongapo City but raised in Texas, made it into the semifinal heats with a time of 49.05 seconds, good enough for third place in his round 1 heat.

Marestella Torres-Sunang is no longer in contention as well with a 28th place finish in in a field of 38 and a distance of 6.22 meters in women's long jump.

Taekwondo jin Kirstie Alora is the lone Filipino left to compete and will take the mat Saturday for the 67kg Round of 16.

Only weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz has put the Philippines on the medal table with a silver for the country's very first Olympic hardware in 20 years.
