MANILA, Philippines – Philippines-Mighty Sports kept its undefeated record in the 36th William Jones Cup with a tightly-fought, 80-73, victory over Iran on Friday, July 29, at the Xinzhuang Stadium in Taiwan.

The win improved the record of the team representing the Philippines in the tournament to 6-0, with games against Egypt and Chinese Taipei B remaining on its schedule.

Former PBA import Al Thornton led the way for Philippines-Mighty Sports with 24 points and 8 boards, while Dewarick Spencer pitched in 21 points and 9 rebounds. Another former PBA import in Hamady N’Diaye also played well, registering 14 points.

Despite leading 26-10 in the first half, Philippines-Mighty Sports was unable to cruise the rest of the way.

Even without big man Hamed Haddadi, Iran was able to fight the import-laden team close and was down only by one, 53-52, entering the final frame.

Philippines-Mighty Sports was eventually able to seal the win thanks to Thornton, who converted a 3-point play to extend his team’s lead to 80-71, which the Iranians were unable to rally from.

At 6-0, Philippines-Mighty Sports remains atop the tournament standings. – Rappler.com
