LAUSANNE, Switzerland - The International Olympic Committee on Friday, July 22 said it had stripped Turkey's Sibel Ozkan of the weightlifting silver medal she won at the 2008 Olympics due to a doping offense.
Ozkan, 28, came second in the -48kg category in Beijing, but she was caught after the IOC ordered a retest of samples from both the 2008 Games and 2012 Olympics in London.
The IOC said in a statement she had tested positive for the banned substance stanozolol, an anabolic steroid.
Ozkan also earned a silver medal at the 2014 world championships but was not due to participate in Rio next month.
The IOC's disciplinary commission ordered Ozkan to return the medal and requested the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) modify the result of the event and consider further disciplinary measures.
Earlier on Friday, the IOC reported 45 new doping failures from the two previous Olympic Games after more than 1,200 samples, notably those of past medal winners, were reanalyzed, bringing the total number of positive drug tests to 98. – Rappler.com
