MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine men’s national basketball team fell to Turkey in a second straight tune-up game, 84-76, ahead of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournament in Manila on Friday, July 1, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Gilas Pilipinas lost by 35 to the Turkish national team in Istanbul 8 days ago and put on a better effort in front of its home crowd on Friday, but effective shooting and a clear height advantage for Turkey were too much for the Philippines to handle.
Turkey shot 45% from the field and out-rebounded Gilas 43-33. The Philippines hit 42% of their attempts and went only 15-of-26 from the foul line.
Muhammed Ali led Turkey with 16 points while Andray Blatche had 20 points to lead Gilas.
Terrence Romeo, who scored 8 consecutive points down the stretch to head a late rally, finished with 16 for the game.
The Olympic Qualifiers begin on Tuesday, July 5, with the Philippines facing France. – Rappler.com
