MANILA, Philippines – The Golden State Warriors enjoyed the most successful regular season in NBA history by winning 73 games, but that record is in jeopardy of becoming just a piece of trivia if the team fails to close out the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals on Monday, June 20 (Manila time).
Following his team’s Game 6 defeat, Warriors guard Klay Thompson was asked if the season becomes a failure without the ring. “100%,” he answered.
“I thought that was a trick question at first. We expected to win the NBA Championship coming into the season. It's either win the whole thing or bust for us. I mean, it's no fun getting second place.”
Thompson shot just 9-of-21 from the field in Game 6, including 3-of-10 from outside. He finished with 25 points and 3 boards, while on the other end, LeBron James had another 41-point outing.
“So it would be a great season,” Thompson said about breaking the league’s 20-year regular season record previously held by the 72-10 Chicago Bulls, “but at the same time to us, the players, we're so competitive, we'd feel like we failed.
“So that's all right. A lot at stake, but that's when we're going to rise up and be at our best.”
With a loss in Game 7, Golden State would become the first team in NBA history to squander a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals. The Warriors lost 9 games all of the regular season, but have already lost 8 times in the playoffs.
Steph Curry scored 30 points to lead the Dubs in Game 6, but was ejected from the game after fouling out and picking up a technical foul late in the fourth period. – Rappler.com
