In a text message to Rappler, Sablan said, “I can’t comment about UST at this time. I was surprised. I didn’t know anything about the plans of UST. I guess we have to wait for any announcement from them. Thank you.”
Following reports and assertions of physical abuse and other matters surrounding the stewardship of De La Cruz, the former UST Tiger Cub was placed on “preventive suspension” pending an investigation. Two former UST head coaches in Aric Del Rosario, who led the university to 4 consecutive UAAP titles from 1993-96, and Pido Jarencio, who led the Growling Tigers to the 2006 championship as well as two other finals berths, also applied.
Other former UST players who applied include Ernesto “Estong” Ballesteros, Bal David Jr and Jino Manansala.
According to one of the applicants, he was told that school is set to announce the hiring of Sablan as its head coach for Season 79 June 1, a day after De La Cruz’ contract expires. UST will play host to the next UAAP season.
However, in a conversation between Rappler and one of the applicants, he was told that Sablan is indeed going to call the shots for the Growling Tigers next season. The Tigers have shunned participation in the ongoing Filoil Flying V Premier Cup but instead are playing in the Milcu Got Skills competition.
The Tigers have lost 3 of last season’s pillars in Karim Abdul, Ed Daquioag and Kevin Ferrer, leaving Louie Vigil and Jon Sheriff as their lone seasoned veterans who received significant playing time last season. – Rappler.com
