MANILA, Philippines – The road to the FIBA Olympic Qualifiers in Manila from July 4-10 continued on Wednesday, May 25, when the Philippine men’s national basketball team held a 3-hour training session at the Meralco Gym in Pasig.
15 players from the pool were present, with 14 active and a one (Jeff Chan) observing.
Here are some highlights from Gilas’ training:
June Mar Fajardo, the 3-point shooter? You heard it here first:

Speaking of 3-point shooting, one player who’s improved in that area is Calvin Abueva, who was stroking it from downtown:

Another guy who can hit from outside? Gilas coach Tab Baldwin himself:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Coach <a href="https://twitter.com/iHob1111">@iHob1111</a> hitting from Steph Curry range. He made 3/4. <a href="https://t.co/0VNSR63V6c">pic.twitter.com/0VNSR63V6c</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735350431031930880">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Baldwin, who can be light and crack jokes when he’s not engineering his team to completing drills perfectly, asks a member of the crowd to touch the ball here before stroking it again from deep:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Coach <a href="https://twitter.com/iHob1111">@iHob1111</a> asks a fan to touch the ball, then hits a 3 from the corner. Gilas had some 5-on-5 drills on Wednesday. This one ended with Fajardo shooting an easy floater:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Play ends with Fajardo making a floater <a href="https://t.co/XldujPfd73">pic.twitter.com/XldujPfd73</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735363364126330880">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Look at Gabe Norwood, shaking and baking:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">.<a href="https://twitter.com/GNorwood5">@GNorwood5</a> loses Lassiter and then connects on the mid range J <a href="https://t.co/kLO0tiai8p">pic.twitter.com/kLO0tiai8p</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735367708376698880">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Told you June Mar’s looking to work on that stroke:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Alex Compton teaches Fajardo some shooting technique and he nails the jumper <a href="https://t.co/AQeYAn9ZoM">pic.twitter.com/AQeYAn9ZoM</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735368588484354048">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Terrence Romeo and Kiefer Ravena connect on a backdoor play leading to the layup:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">A glimpse of the future: Romeo connects with Ravena <a href="https://t.co/HeyQX8FC36">pic.twitter.com/HeyQX8FC36</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735369824503791618">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Norwood tried using the same move on Ray Parks, but could not get loose:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Parks plays shutdown defense <a href="https://t.co/ML40SGt29e">pic.twitter.com/ML40SGt29e</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735371352199270401">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Parks can get it done on offense as well, stroking the open jumper here from good ball movement:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Excellent ball movement leads to an open <a href="https://twitter.com/ray15parks">@ray15parks</a> 3-ball <a href="https://t.co/L9ua9ZIwh9">pic.twitter.com/L9ua9ZIwh9</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735371534320173056">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Romeo attacks the paint, draws defenders, and finds the open Mo Tautuaa for a slam:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The drive by Romeo leads to the open <a href="https://twitter.com/Tautuaa33">@Tautuaa33</a> dunk <a href="https://t.co/ouh4nfDkre">pic.twitter.com/ouh4nfDkre</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735371969907036161">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Abueva can also shoot it from midrange:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The drive by Romeo leads to the open <a href="https://twitter.com/Tautuaa33">@Tautuaa33</a> dunk <a href="https://t.co/ouh4nfDkre">pic.twitter.com/ouh4nfDkre</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735371969907036161">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Romeo and Tautuaa use the pick-and-roll this time, leading to another easy score:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The Romeo-Mo pick and roll works well <a href="https://t.co/uExdReuXck">pic.twitter.com/uExdReuXck</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735373141996888064">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
Japeth Aguilar is known for his dunking skills, but if you leave him open, he can hit the jumper:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Aguilar can do more than dunk: the jumper is in <a href="https://t.co/jksWXCEXl1">pic.twitter.com/jksWXCEXl1</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735373289632174080">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
But, of course, he can still dunk it:
{source} <blockquote class="twitter-video" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Fast break leads to an alley oop for Japeth <a href="https://t.co/mn0S7t4SLR">pic.twitter.com/mn0S7t4SLR</a></p>— Rappler Sports (@RapplerSports) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapplerSports/status/735373539541389313">May 25, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> {/source}
