MANILA, Philippines – A couple of new records were made during the 2015 Palarong Pambansa held in Davao del Norte, and there is hope that more records will fall when the games take place in Albay from April 10-16 this year.
Student-athletes from Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, and the NCR made waves last year. Martin James Esteban of Central Luzon Balitucan National High School set a new triple jump record of 15.01 meters. Christian Sy, Andrae Pogiongko, and Drew Magbagalso recorded 4.07 minutes in the 400m medley. Alnair Guevarra, Eman Dapat, and Miguel Barlisanin posted 3:41.38 minutes in the 400 meter freestyle.
A few elementary students like Jules Katherine Ong, Seth Isaak Martin and Ethan Go also shined by smashing records in the swimming competitions, while students such as Camille Buico and Regina Maria Castrillo also broke old records.
Even Visayas and Mindanao sent young standouts who left lasting impressions. Alexis Soqueno broke his former 1.92m record in high jump by posting a score of 1.95m. Efrelyn Democer scored 42.34m in the javelin throw, breaking the old record of Stephanie Cimatu by .07 meters.
Through a press release, the Department of Education (DepEd) said that it hopes “the athletes will see last year’s achievements as a goal to surpass. And that the name of every worthy athlete will be etched in sports history.” – Rappler.com
