MANILA, Philippine (UPDATED) – Four of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel's starters wound up in double figures to defeat the Blackwater Elite, 89-79, in the 2016 PBA Commissioner's Cup on Sunday, March 13 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.
Import Othyus Jeffers finished with 23 points after going scoreless in the opening period on top of 14 points, 6 assists and two steals. LA Tenorio was close behind with 20 markers, 4 boards, and 8 dimes as the Gin Kings got right back on the winning track and hiked their record to 4-3.
Greg Slaughter converted 6 of his 9 field goals for 16 points and pulled down 9 rebounds with 4 blocks, while Japeth Aguilar chipped in 14 points, 8 rebounds, two assists and 3 blocks.
"We're trying to learn how to play ugly and win ugly and that's important to us because that's what you have to do in the playoffs," said head coach Tim one, whose team is now on solo 4th place.
"You have to be able to play that defensive-oriented, grind-it-out type of game. We're trying to build to the playoffs."
MJ Rhett led Blackwater with 24 points and 23 rebounds – including 12 on the offensive end. Carlo Lastimosa added 19 points while Mike Cortez went across the stat sheet with 12 markers, 6 boards, 6 dimes, 4 steals and two blocks. He also only had 3 turnovers as Blackwater slipped to 3-4.
Ginebra was unable to shake off Blackwater for good until late in the game when they went on an 8-0 run late in the fourth to lead comfortably 84-73.
The Elite were within 73-76 after a James Sena basket with 5:38 remaining but Tenorio countered, banking in a jumper to spark the run, which was capped by a Jeffers baseline drive to the basket.
