MANILA, Philippines – The UST Tigresses closed the first round of the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament in impressive fashion by completing a 3-set sweep of the DLSU Lady Spikers, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21, on Wednesday, March 2, at the San Juan Arena.

Coming off a tough 4-set loss to the UP Lady Maroons, UST improved its record to 3-4 by defeating La Salle, which was coming off an impressive 3-set sweep over defending champion Ateneo last weekend.

The Lady Spikers fell to 5-2, good for second in the league standing behind the Lady Eagles (6-1), while the Tigresses are now in a 3-way tie with Adamson and NU.

Dapat pataas nang pataas ang laro namin,” said UST head coach Kungfu Reyes post game. “Yun ang gusto namin mangyari. Hopefully magdire-direcho.

(Our play should continue to improve. That’s what we want to happen. Hopefully it’s consistent.)

Siguromay hangover pa ang La Salle,” the head coach also suggested, referring to the Lady Spikers’ most recent victory.

(Maybe La Salle still had a hangover.)

UST out-attacked DLSU, 33-26, and capitalized on 29 of its opponents’ errors.

EJ Laure impressed with 13 points while Cherry Rondina registered 11 in the win.

La Salle was led by the 15 points of Ara Galang. Mary Joy Baron was the team’s other double-digit scorer with 10 points.

Hindi na namin iniisip ‘yung standing,” said Reyes. “Basta dapat maganda ang laro nang mga bata.”

(We’re not thinking about the standing. What’s important is the players play well.) – Rappler.com
